Witchmark

Witchmark is a story introducing us to a protagonist Sir Christopher Hensley. He returns identifying himself as Miles Singer and begins working as a psychiatrist in a veteran hospital to escape being noticed and continue living. He was known to be a powerful secondary magician who was seen by his family as a living hope, and that’s the reason he ran to the war between Laneer and Aeland where he disappears. He joins the army to escape his destiny as Sir Christopher. He is looking for freedom which does not get from his noble family which uses people with unique magical powers to control the nation.
The story has three often mentioned characters; Miles with the opportunity to reclaim his powers, his new friend Tristan with a secret and is a static hero; Grace, Miles’ young sister who is messy. She was brought up enjoying the benefits of power structure but cares much about his brother after the mistakes, steps and betrayals she learns. Tristan and Miles are both gay as we see them developing feelings for each other and their romance is right in the middle of the struggles and investigations.

Miles fights in the war where he is captured and reported dead. After faking his death and reinventing himself, he begins working in a hospital with a new identity of a new name, Miles Singer. When they win the war, the officers put a lot of strain on the mental health facilities of the country and Miles since he is currently working there. His family discovers where he was hiding and plans to use him in their political activities and as a visitor from far. When he returns home, he finds it hard to leave behind his past and to hide the real him.

When Miles realizes that his patients have started killing their family members, he has to discover what is hiding among the veterans who have come from war and how he can cure it. He finds out that they have been possessed with some demons and has to find a way of healing them. Miles is the son of a high-class minister, and he is expected to dedicate his life and powers to only his family using him as a slave. However, he uses his skills of healings and outdoes a doctor instead of attaching himself to his sister.

Miles life changes when he miraculously heals a patient who came to the hospital claiming for help after being poisoned using his healing gift. His workmates and other veterans try to find out what has just happened to the patient and find out more secrets about Miles than they never knew. The incident makes his freedom to be at risk while he is still on the mission of investigating the killings committed by his patients. For Miles to find the truth, he will have to depend on the help of his family members who he dislikes and also on the kindness of Tristan. The research brings Miles back, and he will have to meet his family and make choices to his destiny.

Miles is an outstanding character, smart and selflessly willing to help the veterans recover from the demons. The story has many actions with Miles associating with his family again , politics and the results of the previous war. C.L Polk puts much interest and focuses on the family obligation and a feeling of how individuals work for the community and their agency to do it. He describes his characters and the story’s atmosphere magically.
The leading character is well written and has an emotion that makes him feel real while maintaining a closed feel that some modern men seem to have. His romantic relationship with another man shows the discomfort of his emotions, and this makes him a more adorable character. You will end up loving Miles’ behavior of staying low even when he is successful in saving people’s lives at the hospital and supports the veterans program.

The story is set in Edwardian England during the time of post-world war. The book’s atmosphere is good with this tale of magic, lonely hearts, and lost souls. C. L Polk blends mystery, inventive fantasy, romance, and political interests to make the story more charming.

Stormsong

Stormsong is the second novel in C.L. Polk’s series The Kingston Cycle. Grace Hensley is to be assisted by his brother, Miles to erase the cruelty that covers her nation but she has to deal with the results on her own. Their land has a serial of winter storms which cannot be controlled making it a disaster to them. Grace has the vision of taking her parents to a safe place, but the unfriendly queen and some magicians distract her plans.
Since there is a revolution in the country, she has to be careful with her plans because anything can end up starting a war in the land. Another character, Avia Jessup, a photojournalist, comes close to the hidden secrets that when revealed could end up destroying the whole nation. She also becomes a close friend of Grace.

The worldly avengers, magical things and the impossible love affairs inspires the author to write the book that makes it appealing to put down when you begin reading it. In the course of reading you will find yourself asking the question, can Aeland be safely saved without any bloodshed or will end up being destroyed in the fire together with Grace? The book will give the answer after you complete reading it.
