An American writer, Janet Dailey has come to be regarded as one of the foremost authors currently working within her field to date, as she puts out work on regular basis, making her one of the most consistent and highly prolific of her generation, with over ninety novels so far and counting, as well as twenty-one of these being included on the best-seller lists, as they are both extremely popular as well as being critically acclaimed, with her being respected by both her many peers and contemporaries alike.

Creating a name for herself largely within the romance genre, she has managed to shape the form in her own image, making something entirely new in the process allowing it to really come to life. Not only taking it in new directions, she has become a master of the craft understanding not only where to take it, but also where it’s come from as well.

Coming from Storm Lake in Iowa, her upbringing is clearly evident throughout her work, as it really manages to evoke a sense of Americana unlike any other. Giving a strong idea of rural life in the country, it not only breathes life into the landscape, but it also manages to give the reader a sense of character too, providing them with a grand sense of ambition and what it was really like to live there.

Each of her characters become familiar over the course of her many novels too, as they each come to life off the page, allowing them to easily resonate with audience, as the reader empathizes with them and their plight throughout. Not only that, but it also brings a sense of down-to-earth homespun wisdom into it all, as Janet Anne Haradon Dailey’s warm with and good humor manage to shine through, allowing her stories to become universal, as well as easily accessible to all.

One series that she has become particularly well known for over the years is that of her long-running ‘Calder’ series of novels, that takes a slice of Americana and brings it to life for the reader in what is essentially an epic saga. Using elements of romance and grandiose storytelling, these stories hark back to time of ambition in the face of a new world, as the inhabitants look to make a life themselves. This is reflected in the lives of the characters, specifically the Calder family, along with their hopes and dreams, as they aim to create a new life for themselves.

Running for over eleven books so far and counting, this is a series that started back in 1982 and has been running all the way until 2010. Coming a long way over the years, the many characters have developed and grown, something which the long-term fans of the series have also come to appreciate as well. Watching them grow along with the world contained within, they’ve seen how this series has gone on to become an institution of sorts almost in its own right, something which is bolstered by its universal and timeless appeal.

This Calder Range

Setting up the long-running saga, this is the book that really started it all, as it was originally brought out in 1982, later being reissued in 2001 on the 2nd of January through the ‘Pocket Books’ publishing label. Creating the template for the novels to follow it introduces not only the characters, but the world they are to inhabit as well, creating a sense of atmosphere and ambiance. This is reflected in the books to follow, as it manages to evoke a sense of the great outdoors, along with the grand ambition of the characters too.

Looking to draw a fortune from the lands of Montana, the ever ambitious Chase Benteen Calder has heard tell of riches whispering through the grass. Hoping to make a name for himself he has Lorna by his side, as she provides him with advice and confidence, with them matching each other in both dreams and ambition. Braving the lands from the hustle and bustle of Dodge City, to the many dangers of Indian country, they aim to take it all and reap its many rewards along the way. Will they manage to get everything they truly desire? Can they make a name for themselves? What will become of this Calder range?

Stands A Calder Man

Brought out in 1983, this was initially released just one year after the first, as it aimed to continue the saga of the Calder family in much the same vein as the original. Reissued again on the 1st of August in 1999, this was once again published through the ‘Pocket Books’ publishing outlet to much acclaim, with an already eager audience awaiting its arrival. Continuing what came before it manages to bring about the next stage in the life of the family, whilst also providing some twists and turns of its own along the way.

As newcomers arrive where the Calder cattle graze, Webb Calder aims to defend the land that he feels he and his family have laid claim to. That’s when he finds it nigh on impossible to resist the young and delicate Lilli, despite her being married to another man, as well as holding loyalties in the homesteader’s cause. Standing for what he believes in, though, Webb Calder aims to retain what he believes is his, and maintain the family land whatever the costs are. Can he manage this? Will he be able to resist Lilli? What happens when here stands a Calder man?

The Calder Series

Offering a grand slice of Americana, this is a series that really manages to get in touch of the great American outdoors in all its majesty, really ensuring that it leaps off the page. With its characters as well, it really is an exemplary example of the genre, as it clearly reflects all their lives and loves, as they come together and dream big. As ambitious as the nature of its material, this really is a must for not only fans of the author, but the genre as well, as its legacy will stand the test of time for many years to come.

Just now read the comments from Peggy Ellison and Graeme not realizing Janet Dailey had passed away in 2013. I have been buying Janet’s books, especially the Calder Series, which I really like, Just this year I picked up Calder Brand and Calder Grit, but I will no longer buy. I feel I have been deceived with these books. If someone else is writing books under Janet’s name they should at least put their name on the book and state Janet had passed. Very dishonest and deceitful!!!!!!

Hi Peggy – it’s a ghost writer. Apparently, a young author that Janet mentored prior to her passing.
