Calladine & Bayliss series by Helen H. Durrant

Author Helen H. Durrant writes the “Calladine and Bayliss” series of mystery novels. The series began publication when “Dead Wrong” was released in the year 2015.

One of the stars of the series is Ruth Bayliss, who is in her mid-thirties, and loyal yet a plain-speaker. One of her wishes is that she had more time to hit the gym and a love for life. She uses the demanding workload as her excuse for not trying too hard with the guys she meets.

The other star is Tom Calladine, a fifty-one year old single detective inspector who is totally dedicated to his job. That being said, his personal life is not as successful. After being married and divorced by the age of twenty-one set a pattern that is tough for him to escape.

The series is set in Leesdon, a fictional village, which is on the outskirts of an industrial northern English city. There is a ton of crime, but little work. The bane of Calladine’s existence is the Hobfield housing estate, which is the breeding ground for everything that is wrong about this area which he calls his home.

“Dead Wrong” is the first novel in the “Calladine and Bayliss” series, which was released in the year 2015. Near a rough housing estate’s playground, a bag of severed fingers is found. Partners D.S. Ruth Bayliss and DI Calladine are in a race against time to hunt down a murderer before the entire area erupts into violence. Their boss believes it is all because of a drug lord called Ray Fallon, however, Calladine’s instincts are telling him that it is something a lot nastier is happening at the Hobfield housing estate.

Will this pair of detectives be able to track down the killer before more people are killed and the press begins to publicize these gruesome crimes? Calladine and Bayliss are led on a trail that hits dangerously close to home. During a thrilling finale, they race against the clock to rescue somebody that is close to Calladine’s heart.

This is a well paced procedural that holds your interest the entire way through, and enough turns and twists to keep the pages turning. There is a reveal at the end that is quite unexpected. It is easy to get pulled into her style of writing and her believable yet flawed characters.

“Dead Silent” is the second novel in the “Calladine and Bayliss” series, which was released in the year 2015. A body is found in a car accident, but the victim is dead already. Police partners DS Ruth Bayliss and DI Calladine are in a race against the clock to help apprehend a vicious serial murderer. The first two victims have livestock tags fixed to their earlobes and are students from an American university.

Who would want them dead, and what is the link? The detectives put all of the forensic evidence together and hunt down each of the witnesses, only to reach a stunning conclusion.

This book delivers in just about every way possible. Excellent police work, personal nuances that allow the characters a chance to come alive, and a good mystery.

“Dead List” is the third novel in the “Calladine and Bayliss” series, which was released in the year 2015. There is an unlikely serial killer that has a bucket list of victims. Bayliss and Calladine fight a killer that is working their way through their list of victims. Each of the killings is carefully planned and unique, and there is a tarot card left at each crime scene.

Two kids disappear in the are, it raises the stakes and the team is baffled by the connection of the crimes. Calladine and Bayliss race against time itself to make sure more carnage does not happen.

The surprises found in the story adds to the story’s suspense quite a bit. The dialogue and characters are well done, with Calladine and his team feeling like old friends already.

“Dead Lost” is the fourth novel in the “Calladine and Bayliss” series, which was released in the year 2016. Horrific secrets are being held in an abandoned cotton mill. This is one of the toughest challenges that Calladine and Bayliss have ever faced in their careers. Some homeless people have begun living in a disused cotton mill’s grounds, one that belongs to a local businessman named Damien Chase.

One of the men is not what he appears to be. He is hiding a secret that he would do anything to cover up. Once Bayliss and Calladine start investigating, they find that the crimes take things much further than they could have imagined.

Is Ruth going to be able to juggle both her professional and personal lives, and will Calladine deal with their new female boss that he neither likes nor trusts? Calladine makes an astonishing move, in an effort to bring horrible suffering to an end.

These characters feel relatable and real, and these two are both hard working cops. They just attempt to do their best and care for the ones they are working to protect.

“Dead and Buried” is the fourth novel in the “Calladine and Bayliss” series, which was released in the year 2016. Forty years ago, something horrible went down in Annie’s new house.

Annie Naden and her husband purchase an isolated country cottage while at auction. This is the home that they always wanted. Right when they begin the renovations, however, Annie finds a satchel in a hidden old dusty cupboard. There are the usual school books, which are over forty years old, along with a girl’s diary. With the record of pop concerts and day-to-day crushes, is one secret whose awful consequences still resonates to this very day.

Calladine has got problems of his own, too. Vinny Costello appears to be back in town, and the bodies quickly stack up. Ruth is on maternity leave, and he gets into hot water with an assistant of Costello’s. He also has to cope with a harsh member of the team while they try to untangle a complicated series of killings.

What exactly happened to that young girl forty years back? What could it have to do with the current wave of crime?
