Carla Kelly is a published American author. She has composed over 40 novels as well as short stories during the course of her career.
Carla was born on January 1, 1947. She was born into a Navy family as her father was an officer in the Navy. As a result, she spent her childhood overseas or on different coasts of the United States.
She would attend Brigham Young University and studied Latin American History. She graduated and then went to study American History at the University of Louisiana, graduating with her master’s degree. She also focused her degree on the Indian and Civil Wars.
Carla has been employed as a ranger and a historian at Fort Laramie National Historic Site as part of the National Park Service and has also been a ranger at the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site. She has worked for North Dakota’s State Historical Society as a contract research historian. She has also taught history at university. Kelly has been a journalist, working for the Valley City Times Record as a features writer in North Dakota.
She currently lives in Idaho. She is married to her husband, Martin Kelly. He used to be a Theater Director and is now retired. They have five children together who are now all adults and live in various places in the United States.
Kelly is known for writing romance as well as historical fiction. She has written Regency romance, Western American fiction, and historical romance, among other genres. Many of her books are kept in private collections. She has penned stories about the Indian Wars in America and has published many novels along the way. When she started as a ranger and historian she decided to get even more serious regarding her career in writing.
She was written what she calls her Fort Laramie stories series, stories told about women, men and children that were alive during the era of the Indian Wars. The stories were popular and two of them won Spur Awards given by the Western Writers of America. She is the second female author to have the distinction of winning these two awards. The collection of her Indian Wars stories came out in entirety in 2003 as “Stories of the Frontier Army” and is one of her personal favorite works.
Incorporating her duties as a mother, the author has also worked her children into her Regency stories. This includes Marian’s Christmas Wish, a novel that has included a variety of her relatives. Even though her children are now all grown, they help her out by giving her feedback as well as providing material for her stories. Her children will also call her during the holiday season to try and get a recipe as their mother is a great cook.
Carla has also served as a writer of the daily local newspaper as the author of Prairie Lite, a weekly column that has won awards. She began writing Regency stories because of how interested she was in the history of the Napoleonic Wars. These are featured in various short stories and Regency novels. She likes writing about sea warfare and everyday regular people that lived in the British Isles.
The author also has hobbies that she keeps up with. She’s interested in British novels in the crime fiction as well as history genre (specifically military when possible), crocheting afghans, and chatting with others about the Indian Wars or the fur trade. Kelly served as the editor for a portion of the fur trade journal of Rudolf F. Kurz, a Swiss artist.
She enjoys whenever she is being asked to speak on topics and was also employed as a contract researcher for North Dakota’s State Historical Society. She has as a result been allowed to go to national archives and look around military history repositories, digging through archive boxes and older documents, something she really has a passion for.
Kelly has been inspired by many authors and works over the years. One of her writing mantras comes from Robert Utley, who told her that one of the secrets to good writing is to sit down and don’t get up until you are done. She has some fictional works that rank among her favorites that include A Town Like Alice, The Lawrenceville Stories, and War and Peace. Historical works that she enjoys include On the Border with Mackenzie, One Vast Winter Count, and Crossing the Line. She also likes authors of crime fiction such as John Harvey, Peter Robinson, and Michael Connelly.
Carla Kelly is the creator and the writer of the Channel Fleet series. This series started with the debut novel’s publication in 2008. Her inn may be struggling, but at least she has an independent life. Everything changes when a guest shows up. Captain Oliver Worthy is handsome and she can’t help being attracted to him.
He’s only there planning to report back about her to Lord Ratliffe. But when he figures out this might be not in her favor, he wants to keep her safe. Could marrying this beautiful woman be the solution? Read this book to find out!
