Carmen Caine
Carmen Caine (born in the year 1966), like many people on this planet, comes from another world. Carmen, an award winning and bestselling author, spends every possible moment she can scribbling stories on sticky notes that her children find posted all around the house, car, and barn.

When she isn’t working as a software engineer, she is busy writing lyrics for her husband’s songs, ferrying her kids around to their various appointments, and taking care of Tigger the dog and his heart condition. She also scratches her three Nigerian Dwarf Goats behind their horns, trying to tame her three insane cats, and coddling her flock of thirty odd chickens from all around the world.

She writes the “Glass Wall” series, the “Highland Heather and Hearts”, and the “Cassidy Edwards” series. Her work is from the historical, science fiction, romance, and fantasy genres. She also writes under the name Madison Adler.

“The Kindling Heart” is the first novel in the “Highland Heather and Hearts” series and was released in the year 2011. This novel stars Ruan MacLeod and Bree. Ruan MacLeod vowed that he was finished with women. They weren’t anything but trouble. Leaving behind the rash life of his youth behind him, he went back to Skye, looking to find peace. He never sought to split the clan or start up a war with the MacDonald of Duntulm. He definitely never foresaw an arranged marriage to the most scandalous lady in all of Scotland. She was twice his age, the size of a horse, and mom to more than just one illegitimate kid, he agreed he would secure his sister’s freedom.

But even that plan goes terribly awry. On his wedding day, he discovers himself faced with a green-eyed and enticing lass called Bree instead. A disaster on two legs, his bride quickly turns his world to chaos and threatens to melt his whole resolve never to love again.

Bree, who was betrayed by her own mom, flees to Skye, thinking about just reuniting with her long, lost dad. Instead, she discovers herself married to Ruan MacLeod as a replacement bride. She has to stay in the castle, and is quickly caught between the mentally ill wife of the laird and the brothers.

Strong yet shy, Bree goes off on a journey of independence and discovers that all men aren’t necessarily evil. In fact, a particularly brooding but gentle-hearted warrior is worthy of love. She quickly loses her heart for good.

Readers found themselves getting hooked on Bree and Ruan right from the start, and they are both very likable characters. The novel held the interests of fans the entire way through, and they liked seeing these two characters stumbling into love.

“The Bedeviled Heart” is the second novel in the “Highland Heather and Hearts” series and was released in the year 2012. This novel stars Cameron Stewart and Kate Ferguson. Scotland in the year 1479. Cameron Malcolm Stewart, the Earl of Lennox, made peace with his own destiny. It wasn’t his fate to love like other men.

Each one of his politically arranged marriages ended disastrously. Even though he never touched a single one of his wives, he stared believing that sharing his name would consign the lady to an early grave. On the sunny day in spring, Cameron meets a bright-eyed and delightfully devious lass selling charmed stones in one of Stirling’s alehouses, he throws her a shilling, just looking to steal a kiss. It is a kiss that is certain to change his entire life forever.

Kate Ferguson the precocious, has resorted to tricking the drunkards of Stirling, in order to care for her sick dad. A chance encounter with a seductively mysterious and handsome outlaw named Cameron concludes with a kiss that alters the course of her whole destiny.

While dark times descend upon Scotland, Kate is caught inadvertently in a lethal web of court intrigue that was spun by Thomas Cochrane, the royal favorite. While King James III falls prey to his own fear of the Black Arts, accusations of treachery and witchcraft abound. Scotland’s fate is hanging in the balance, and as Cameron vows to defy destiny and hold Kate in his arms forever, he has to unravel the plots of commoners and nobles to keep the country he loves safe.

This is a fast paced story that keeps you reading on into the late hours. This is a true historical romance that is superbly told with some fantastic characters, with the history of the period layered in like a rich tapestry.

“The Daring Heart” is the third novel in the “Highland Heather and Hearts” series and was released in the year 2013. This novel stars Julian Gray and Liselle. Scotland in the year 1482. To Lord Julian Gray, marriage is just a malady, nothing more. How someone even court a lass longer than two weeks when they are countless pouting lips to kiss?

Julian, roaming the courts of Europe, seems to spend all his time wagering gold, drinking wine, and dandling willing lasses upon his knee. Nobody knows the guy behind the mask. Nobody knows that he is actually Le Marin, Europe’s most brazen and daring spy. Everything changes the same night he finds a dagger pressed up against his ribs and one alluring hazel-eyed lady in his bed.

Liselle, who was born into the Vindictam, the renowned Venetian assassin family, dreams about the day she is going to be allowed to practice the craft of the family. When she gets sent to the Scottish court, her dream is finally realized. Is it actually an honor, or a curse?

While the threat of civil war is looming over Scotland, and the king’s brother conspires with the English to see himself on the Scottish throne, Julian is unable to stop from being distracted by this mysterious beauty and all her secrets.

Is it going to be his undoing?

The novel is filled with mystery, intrigue, and a ton of turns and twists. The characters are interesting and the story line is entertaining and helps to keep the attention of the reader throughout.
