Carol Ryrie Brink was a bestselling children’s fiction author that is best known for the “Caddie Woodlawn” series.

The author who was born in 1895 and died in 1981, penned her debut novel “Anything Can Happen on the River” in 1934. She would then publish more than two dozen works by the time of his death.
“Caddie Woodlawn” which she published in 1935 was the winner of the 1958 Lewis Carrol Shelf Award and the Newberry Medal in 1936.

Brink was born in Moscow, Idaho, and was the only child of Henrietta and Alexander Ryrie. Her father was a Scottish immigrant who served as the mayor of the small city between 1895 and 1897.
On the other hand, Carol’s mother was the kid of Dr. Villains W. Watkins one of the most prominent physicians in town.

He was also a board member of the then-new University of Idaho and president of the medical association the state had just established.

Carol had a fairly traumatic childhood as she lost her father to tuberculosis when he was just 35. Her mother went on to remarry but her second marriage collapsed when a year later, her grandmother was murdered.
At only 29, her mother committed suicide, and aged eight Carol was raised by Carol Woodhouse Watkins her maternal grandmother. In 1887, the Watkins family had set up a home in Idaho when Carol’s mother was just 12.
Living with her grandmother the passion for storytelling which her mother had plenty of inspired her to become a storyteller.

Carol Ryrie Brink began writing for the school paper when she was in high school and continued to do that when she was in college. She went to the Oregon-based Portland Academy and then between 1914 and 1917 she went to the University of Moscow.
Brink wrote for the Gem of the Mountains and the student newspaper “The Argonaut,” and was also a member of her college’s Gamma Phi Beta.

In 2017, she went to the University of California and graduated in 1918. In June of the same year, she got married to a young mathematics professor named Raymond W. Brink who she had crossed paths with nearly a decade earlier.
A year earlier to that, he had become a professor at the University of Minnesota and the two would make their home in St. Paul, where they lived for more than four decades.

Brinks raised two kids in Nora and David and use to spend their summer in the backwoods of Wisconsin while she traveled for years in France and Scotland.

Ryrie Brink published “Anything Can Happen on the River,” her debut novel which came out in 1934. Throughout her life, she was involved in writing fiction even though she would late become an accomplished painter and poet.
Following a 55-year marriage, she lost her husband in 1973. Ryrie followed her husband eight years later as she died of heart failure aged 85 in her home in La Jolla, California.

Brink is known for writing in a leisurely and graceful narrative style that captures the atmosphere of places and comes with a good sense of humor, warmth, and careful research.

While many of her children’s fiction works tend to be melodramatic and cute, they often speak to the desire for adventure and fun in a world in which evil and good are easily identified and good ultimately triumphs over evil.
The most significant of her fiction is her period stories and in fact, her best-known work in “Caddie Woodlawn” was what won her position as one of the most beloved and distinguished children’s fiction authors.

Carol Ryrie Brink’s novel “Caddie Woodlawn” is a brilliant classic that most people read in childhood. The work is inspired by the life and time of the author’s grandmother.

Caddie Woodlawn tells the story of an All-American girl with strong patriotism that goes far beyond her home in rural Wisconsin.

In 1864, Caddie full name Carolina Augusta Woodlawn is not your everyday girl. While her sisters spend much of their time baking and sewing, Caddie prefers to swim, hunt and socialize with Indians or do anything that does not require ladylike behavior.

Her mother is frustrated with her behavior, even though she gets encouragement from her father who is happy to see his once-upon-a-time sickly daughter running all around and having fun.

She gets into all manner of adventures that include learning to repair clocks, hunting with her uncle, catching a cold, falling into ice, getting into school fights, helping out three orphaned boys, and saving her cousins and community.
Along the way, she begins unearthing her father’s many secrets, and soon their lives will change forever.

It is a beautiful story that you can read over and over again as it is timeless. Caddie is an endearing and sweet heroine who comes with her own flaws, even though she has a heart of gold and always helps people in need.
Even though she sometimes acts recklessly, she is inventive and clever and is always willing to risk doing unconventional things.

Carol Ryrie Brink’s novel “Caddie Woodlawn’s Family” sees Caddie Woodlawn our favorite character make a comeback, as she goes on even more interesting adventures.

The high-spirited nature she showcased in the first novel still remains in this outing as she has some amusing escapades alongside her siblings.

The work comes with fourteen brand new stories set in the frontier where the Woodlawn children live.

The kids romp through the pages as they discover a hidden cache of melons long past the harvesting season for melons. They also engage in the adoption of baby animals and cattail fights.

There is an incident in which Caddie ruins her new dress during the celebration of Independence Day, a poor girl goes to a medicine show and showcases incredible talent, and a young preacher helps out a wandering Indian.
As is often the case with Carol Ryrie Brink, there is magic and the many escapades by the lead that makes for a great story.

She writes slightly disjointed stories that hark back to happenings during, before, and after Caddie Woodlawn’s year including some happenings from the lead’s grandmother’s life.
