Caryl McAdoo is an award-winning American author of Christian books. She was born in Long Beach, California, and her family relocated to Texas when she was only six months old. Her family later moved to Irving, where she met her husband in the summer prior to their junior year. The two would later get married immediately after graduation. The couple moved to Red River County in 2008.
Though Caryl always dreamed that she would one day write a book, it was her husband who started first. Six years later, the McAdoos published their first non-fiction book, Antiquing in North Texas. They devoted their time to weekly read and critique sessions, which saw them average a title per year from four presses.
Vow Unbroken is the first book in the Texas Romance series by Caryl McAdoo. Susanna Baylor is a deeply devoted woman of faith. She learned a hard lesson when she married Andrew without her father’s blessing. This decision led to tragedy when she lost both Andrew and his brother in a wagon accident. Now, as a widow, Susanna faces the daunting task of raising her young daughter, Rebecca, and her nephew, Levi.
To support her family, Susanna needs to sell her cotton crop. But times are tough. If she can’t find a buyer willing to pay a fair price, she may have to sell off part of her land to survive the coming year. When she prepares to head to town to sell her cotton at the promised price of four cents a pound, she’s met with a harsh reality. Mr. Littlejohn, the buyer, suddenly offers only two cents per pound. For Susanna, taking such a loss is not an option.
Determined to get a fair price, Susanna decides to take her wagon load of cotton to Jefferson, where she has been assured of receiving four cents per pound from the cotton buyers there. The journey won’t be easy. She must figure out how to manage the trip with just Levi and Rebecca by her side.
Under the counsel of her wise friend, Susanna Baylor reluctantly decides to hire Henry Buckmeyer, a man rumored to be lazy all his life. However, her friends insist she cannot undertake the journey alone and must ask him for help. With no other choice and the pressing need to sell her cotton to avoid losing her land, Susanna approaches Henry.
Henry agrees to help but with conditions. He wants to bring his tobacco and furs to sell in Jefferson and insists on bringing his trusty dog for protection. Desperate and with no other options, Susanna agrees, but only if Henry listens to her guidance on how they should travel and the urgency of their arrival in Jefferson.
What Henry doesn’t expect is Susanna’s determination to have things her way, regardless of the risks involved. Susanna soon realizes the complexities of planning such a trip and the many challenges they face.
Throughout their journey, Susanna learns to balance her strong will with the necessity of relying on Henry’s expertise. This journey tests her resolve and forces her to trust Henry’s judgment despite her initial reluctance. As they navigate the dangers and difficulties together, Susanna discovers that sometimes, letting someone else take the lead is not a sign of weakness but a sign of wisdom and faith.
Susanna’s journey with Henry becomes more than just a trip to sell cotton. It also becomes a lesson in trust, resilience, and the understanding that God’s plans often require surrendering control to find true strength and support.
I AM My Beloved is Caryl McAdoo’s standalone novel, which was published in 2018. Caryl McAdoo writes with a compassion that resonates deeply with readers. She crafts stories filled with beauty and grace. Her book I AM My Beloved transports us in time, allowing us to witness the story unfold firsthand.
McAdoo imagines an elderly, dying Solomon penning the Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes with the co-authorship of David’s final wife, Abishag. After David’s death, Abishag inherits her position as Solomon’s queen. Although she falls deeply in love with Solomon, she remains the Virgin Queen. This is because Solomon adheres to the rule that a man must not lie with his father’s wife, even though David never had a physical relationship with her (Deuteronomy 22:30).
As the story progresses, Abishag is deeply pained by Solomon’s sins. While writing Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon together, Solomon expresses his repentance for his grievous wrongdoings. He acknowledges his failures and seeks forgiveness for all his transgressions against God. This repentance adds a profound layer of depth to I AM My Beloved.
However, there is an enduring bias against Solomon. Despite his conversations with God, his intimate knowledge of his father’s Psalms, and his authorship of Proverbs and 1,005 songs, Solomon repeatedly broke divine commandments. He enslaved men to build the Temple, took credit for the construction, married foreign wives, and honored their gods above his own. He built worship areas for their idols, entered forbidden covenants, and was the first Israeli king to sacrifice his children to Molech.
The second story recounts Korah’s rebellion against Moses and God, detailed in Numbers 16. Korah, along with his followers, confronts Moses and Aaron. This led to a dramatic event where the earth splits open and swallows them. Following this, the rest of the Israelites blame Moses for orchestrating Korah’s demise. This prompted God to express His frustration with the nation once again (Numbers 16:45).
In response, God instructs Moses and Aaron to separate themselves from the congregation so He can annihilate the Israelites. Instead of leaving, Moses and Aaron prostrate themselves. Moses realizes that a plague has struck the people and directs Aaron to use incense, traditionally used in Tabernacle services, to intercede and halt the plague.
These stories highlight the clear difference between Solomon and Moses in their relationships with God, as depicted by Jewish sages. Solomon worked without a direct relationship with God and often attempted to maneuver around divine plans. This is as evidenced in the books of Kings and Chronicles.
On the other hand, Moses had an intimate knowledge of God. He approached God with reverence and humility, never seeking to outwit Him but instead making heartfelt appeals on behalf of the people. He even successfully interceded multiple times to avert God’s wrath.
Moses’s actions in the wilderness, pleading for mercy and leading the people despite their repeated failings, draw parallels to Jesus Christ’s ultimate act of intercession on the cross. Jesus, like Moses, intervened to shield humanity from God’s judgment.
