City Of Bones
City Of Bones is the first installment of the Mortal Instruments books. It follows main character Clarissa Fray, called Clary. Clary witnesses a strange act of what appears to be murder by an unusual teenager named Jace Wayland. She is the only one that can see him. He explains to her that what he killed was a demon in disguise. She encounter him again but returns home only to find her house was been ransacked, her mother kidnapped, and there is a giant demon in her bedroom. Clary does battle with the demon and defeats it, sustaining injuries from the battle.
Jace finds Clary and brings her to his home, a Gothic cathedral disguised to the outside world as a “mundie”. She meets his mentor and his siblings Isabelle and Alec Lightwood and learns they are all Shadowhunters and kill disguised demons. With the aid of a magical monk named Jeremiah, Clary and Jace travel to the mysterious City of Bonesto unravel the mystery of Clary’s powers. The “Silent Brothers” try to figure out why she can see them when no one else can reveals that there has been a block placed on Clary’s mind. She sees the name Magnus Bane in her mind, which leads her to find out that Magnus Bane is the high warlock and her mother asked him to place a block on Clary’s mind so that she could live her life as a normal teenager instead of being subjected to that world. Magnus will not break the spell, but he says that since there are cracks appearing in the spell the combination of truth and time will probably dissolve the spell eventually anyway.
Clary’s mundie friend Simon goes to a party but accepts a drink from a faerie disguised as a vampire and is promptly kidnapped. Clary and Jace go to rescue him, where they meet the head of the vampire coven, Raphael. They are rescued from the vamps by werewolves and Clary and Simon share a moment, which Jace observes. Alec later tells Clary that he wants her to go back to her world because she’s putting Jace in danger. They have a disagreement and Alec leaves. The rest of the book is filled with twists and turns as the reader follows Clary, Simon, Jace, Isabelle, and Alec along their tangled path and to search for the other Mortal Instruments.
City Of Ashes
City Of Ashes is the second book in the Mortal Instruments installment. The reader is reunited once more with Clary and the Shadowhunter game. Clary is waiting for her mother to wake up out of the coma she fell into, induced by a potion from Magnus. She’s living at her friend Luke’s house, Simon has kissed her and is apparently calling her his girlfriend, and Jace has gotten kicked out on suspicion of being a spy for arch enemy Valentine. Jace goes to a bar where he sees a slain child werewolf and does not agree to help the pack, whereupon the pack attacks him and Luke comes out of nowhere to save him.
Clary gets a message from Isabelle telling her that Jace has been imprisoned in the Silent City by the Inquisitor. Jace hears sounds of a fight while imprisoned and discovers that nemesis Valentine has returned, killing the Silent Brothers and obtaining the second Mortal Instrument, the Mortal Sword. Clary frees Jace and the Inquisitor appears, accusing Jace of being in league with Valentine. Magnus Bane says he will keep Jace in his apartment as a prisoner in the mean time. Jace is later summoned to appear with the faeries and goes, bringing along Alec, Isabelle, and Clary. However, Clary is tricked into consuming faerie food, and her true feelings are revealed. Clary continues to develop her powers and must continue in her quest to free her mother from her spell.
