Cassie Alexander is a registered nurse and writer of paranormal, romance, and mystery novels. She wrote a covid-19 pandemic memoir, the Year of the Nurse as Cassandra. Her debut novel, Nightshifted, was published by St. Martin’s Press in 2012.

Cassie likes writing stories about blood, alchemy, and science.

Nightshifted
Nightshifted is the debut in the Edie Spence series. Edie Spence feels nursing school prepared her for many things, including dealing with burn victims and even broken limbs. She could handle any patient but wasn’t ready to deal with vampires and zombies. However, being the newest nurse on Y4, which happens to be a private ward located in the bowels of the County hospital, Edie’s hands are full with every kind of paranormal patient one can imagine.

Edie was used to working as a nightshift nurse all night, going home to an empty house, then sleeping until 3 pm. She was used to eating junk food because she could afford anything else and was constantly worrying about her addicted brother.

During her days off, she went out dancing and later returned to her apartment with a stranger as a one-night stand she could kick out before either of them could catch a breath.

Things appeared better when Edie worked in a private hospital, even when she had no friend to talk to and an addicted brother. The best part is that she could afford more compared to now.

She was approached by some powerful strangers who offered to help her brother in a program that actually worked if she accepted to work at the secret Y4 ward in County Hospital. It was a place where supernatural beings went to seek medical assistance.

It’s a ward that no one knows about, but since Edie wants his brother to get the help, she has to pay the price without question. She was also working for an indefinite period on the service.

They range from vampires to zombies and other more frightening creatures. All Edie was trying to do was earn the basics so that she could complete her shift unharmed. However, hell breaks loose when a vampire servant turns into dust in front of her.

Now Edie feels haunted by the man’s last dying words, ‘Save Anna, ‘ and when she comes into her actual senses, she is already on a mission to rescue a helpless girl from the creatures. Her mission will leave her no option but to crash into a vampire habitat falling for a zombie and later fighting for her soul. She finds herself stumbled into some bad stuff and accidentally kills a vampire while rescuing Anna.

As a result, Edie is wrapped up in the paranormal underground, fighting to save her life.

Even though Edie works with dragons, vampires, shapeshifters, and zombies, do help her life or financial need; instead, it puts her in so much danger. She has worked in shitty places, but Edie wasn’t prepared to take care of vampires and other paranormal creatures.

However, even though she had washed her hands off her brother after messing up everything, including her life, Edie still loved and cared for her brother. He kept using her while she tried putting her foot down.

Nightshifted is an urban fantasy novel with dark and gritty moments to keep readers at the edge of their seats. The story is a blend of action, imagination, and humor with the right amount of romance. Edie is a fantastic narrator, and unlike most urban fantasy heroines, she is relatable in more than one way. At times she screws up but gets lucky to escape extremely dangerous situations.

She is a decent person who does what he needs to do to get life moving. The zombies are well designed, and the hospital environment adds a fascinating dimension. Cassie created terrific characters, which include shapeshifters, vampires, zombies, and were.

Edie is kind and charismatic, which makes the reader want to see her succeed in all her adventures. Fans of urban fantasy with some dash of romance, Nightshifted is the perfect book for you.

Moonshifted
Moonshifted is the second novel in the Edie Spence series. It takes off immediately, where Nightshifted ended with Edie Spence recovering from the vampire attack. She still feels for her lover, Ti, who went to an unknown location.

After Edie Spence survived a cruel vampire attack, she’s ready to go back to attending to supernatural beings seeking medical assistance. Soon her nursing skills are tested after she witnesses a hit-and-run while on her lunch break.

She realizes the victim is not an ordinary werewolf but a pack leader. This leaves Edie stuck at the center of a Were battle. There is an enemy pack fighting hard, and Edie has no plans of crossing the enemy lines in any way. However, after coming across the patient’s nephew, Lucas, with something in his eyes that is impossible to ignore, Edie has no option but to choose sides in the battle.

But can Edie trust his fierce and dangerous new friend? Also, can she rely on her instincts whenever she comes close to him? However, in both ways, Edie doesn’t appear to give up even when she knows getting into the fighting will expose her to more danger.

When Edie takes it on herself to save the vampire child, the child is Anna asks her to become some ambassador and gets her involved in things Edie didn’t even understand, then later disappears without ensuring her safety.

Now the vampires and some zombies are looking for her, and the werewolves are trying to eat her. She is fed up with being the one who solves all the mysteries after she finds blood spots on her sofa.

Edie was just an ordinary lady working night shifts at the hospital and gets conned severally by her brother, then later pushed into the supernatural community. She has no lasting relationships or real friends, and her bond with her family is unstable.

Throughout the story, you can’t help but feel for Edie’s quiet and sad life. She gets involved in vampires’ business in odd ways, and they force her to do their dirty work with their flattery words while keeping her in the dark.

Alexander weaved this novel with the right amount of humor and horror.
