Cat Johnson is a New York Times and USA Today best selling author of contemporary romance novels. Johnson has sold about one million copies of her various stories in either print or digital format since 2006. She has written many novels and short stories, her series include: Studs in Spurs, Oklahoma Nights, Midnight Cowboys, Hot SEALs, Red, Hot, & Blue, The Trilogy Collection, Olympus; which features four novellas, Texas Two Step, Maverick Ranch, USMC Military Romance. Besides writing stories, she has also had many other jobs, she’s been a bartender, marketing manager, wife, tour guide, radio show host, avid animal lover, professional harpist, and Junior League president.
The Studs in Spurs is a series that does not feature the same lead throughout all the novels, instead, it features a different lead in each book. As the title suggests, the books feature leading men who are professional bull-fighters who also have a softer side and are looking for love. Some of Cat Johnson’s other series does this as well. The first two books, however feature Mustang, further sequels feature other characters taking center stage. This allows each book to have a different romance and allow readers to fall in love with new people each time.
“Unridden”, the first book in Johnson’s Studs in Spurs series and features Slade and Mustang. This is the only book in the series that features two leading males. Both characters are professional bull-riders; they have one other thing in common. They are starting to lose interest in bedding every willing woman that they meet. Mustang has a real name, Michael, but gets the nickname Mustang because he is hung like a horse. Even when Mustang tries to make it more interesting, it does nothing, at least for Slade, to actually make it more interesting. An author named Jenna Block comes to town for a romance writers’ convention and they both fall for her. She comes to town because her agent thinks a book centered around cowboys is the very thing to get her career going, and she is doing research about it with the bull riding that is going on town at the time. She is not so sure as she is from the city, she does not know or even interact with cowboys, and is unable to write about them. They both try to win her affections, but only one wins, Slade. She was drawn to him from the very first moment they laid eyes on each other, as was Slade. When Mustang realizes that Jenna wants Slade more than him, he really pushes Slade to do right by Jenna, by not screwing things up with her. Slade, at first, is a little resistant, forcing Mustang to practically have to drag him towards the realization that he is better off being with her than with any other woman. Although, she does partake in group sex, on her 35th birthday to boot, with the two cowboys after some urging from the two.
Fans liked the sex scenes in this book. They felt that Johnson does a good job talking about the thoughts and feelings rather than a blow by blow of what happens. Readers of this book also thought that the relationship between Slade and Jenna was underdeveloped and the fact that their relationship comes together after they have a menage with Mustang was a little unrealistic. Readers also liked the author’s ability to talk about bull riding and make readers learn about the sport in a way that drew them into her story. As well as the look Johnson gives readers into romance fiction writing that appears in the book; like her conversations with her agent and when she is at the convention. This look inside Jenna’s life added realism to the story. Fans also praised the humorous moments in the book. Some fans didn’t like the description of the menage either, they thought it was unnecessary and rather unsexy too.
“Bucked”, the second book in Johnson’s Studs in Spurs series and features Mustang. After the events of “Unridden”, Mustang is still looking for love. An injury has left him unable to compete for three months, and has to be a stud for the camera in pornography, which he does not enjoy quite as much. He decides to go to his hometown to heal, but does so with no other option because he dad would rather he work at the prison with him than riding bulls for a living. He encounters a girl he knew in his youth, only now without braces, pigtails, and glasses; he used to look right through her, but now he sees her in a different light now, She has always had a crush on him, even when he was going by his real name of Michael. Now that he does, she wants to try to get with him and tame him, no matter what it takes. She has heard all about his various conquests, and it does not really bother her much. What starts out as just a fling for both Sage and Michael, turns into something more serious. He decides that being domesticated might not be so bad, and she does not think that she can get him out of her system once their fling is over. He is not sure, however, if she finds out that he has done pornography, if she will want to continue their romance or not.
Readers who liked this book have praised the interesting plot, the author for making the porn scenes that Mustang takes part in for being unsexy and mechanical, and the fact that Mustang was able to turn over a new leaf with Sage; he didn’t just sleep with her and kick her out of bed; he actually took the time to treat her like she meant something and he lets her in; he allows the relationship to happen rather than just push it away. Other readers liked that Johnson shows what Jenna and Slade, from the first book, have been up to since readers last saw him. Some readers felt like there was not enough about the future of Sage and Mustang, that Cat Johnson just leaves what will come next for Mustang’s riding career, his relationship with Sage, and how would they handle being apart from each other.
