About Cat Rambo
Mainly known for writing urban fantasy novels, the American novelist Cat Rambo is well regarded for their imaginative and intelligent stories. Capturing the imagination and attention of readers from around the world, they really have a way with words, writing in a direct and to the point manner. Well written with intricate narratives, their stories are both compelling and entertaining, keeping the reader hooked throughout. Creating modern mythopoeia, their stories and series create their own worlds that really come to life upon the page for the reader.
Winning numerous awards, they’re well known by critics as well, with many of their peers and contemporaries singing their praises. Moving the fantasy genre in new and exciting directions, they have an interesting perspective that’s completely fresh and different. Setting themselves apart from other writers within their field, they’ve carved their own unique niche, establishing their own idiosyncratic brand. Letting their work speak for itself, they take their audience on a journey, with stories that are fun, as well as having something to say.
Their characters are also very well drawn, giving the reader a feeling as if they’re really getting to know them. Often coming back time and time again, their ongoing arcs and stories ensure that readers can easily relate to each of their protagonists. A clear spokesperson for their craft too, they’re often speaking out and teaching others, imparting their knowledge to up-and-coming writers. With plenty more to come too, they definitely aren’t stopping any time soon either, as they continue growing from strength-to-strength.
Early and Personal Life
Born in 1963 on the 14th of November, Cat Rambo was born and raised in Bryan, Texas, in the United States of America. Growing up with a keen interest in English and literature, they would develop their own personal style, creating a name for themselves. Attending Clarion West and the John Hopkins Writing Seminars, they would graduate, learning their craft as a writer and author.
Focusing on science-fiction and fantasy, they would become a member of the Codex Writers’ Group, becoming a key figure in the literary community. Previously working for Microsoft as a progammer-writer, they would also work as a Tarot card reader too. These experiences would give them a diverse range of influences to draw from as they continue to write to this very day.
Writing Career
The first book that Cat Rambo would release was titled ‘Beasts of Tabat,’ which would come out back in 2015. It would also begin the soon to be much loved ‘Tabat Quartet’ series of books, reaching a wide-range of readers around the world. Introducing Cat to a worldwide audience, this would see them becoming hugely popular with readers from far and wide.
Prior to this they would see a number of short-stories published in various different outlets publications, such as Clarkesworld Magazine, Tor.com, and Asimov’s. Receiving awards too, including becoming Nebula Award finalist, they’ve also written alongside other fellows authors like Anne and Jeff VanderMeer. Maintaining a profile both offline as well as on, they have lots more planned for the future, they teach, edit, and write extensively.
Hearts of Tabat
Originally being released through the WordFire Press publishing imprint, this would be the second book in the ‘Tabat Quartet’ series of novels. Following on from the previous books, it’s self-contained, so you can read the books in any order you choose, although it’s best to read them in order. Initially coming out on the 2nd of April in 2018, it would be a fantasy romance, with a whole world established in its narrative.
With societal shifts taking place, the city of Tabat is changing, and Adelina Nettlepurse, who secretly owns the Spinner Press, and is a noted historian, finds herself drawn into it by love. Sebastiano is dealing with the College of Mages and the difficulties there, and his father is demanding he marry soon. Then Adelina’s friend is exiled after being convicted of sorcery, as Tabat sees a revolution of the mythological beasts residing there. Will Adelina be able to keep her head above water, can Sebastiano ever hope to marry, and what will become of these hearts of Tabat?
Featuring a compelling and innovative story, there’s several themes running throughout this book, such as power and revolution. On top of this there’s engaging romance driving it forwards, as the reader is made to really care about the outcome of the characters. Keeping them invested in their story, Cat is definitely a professional, as they handle the story with expert precision every step of the way.
You Sexy Thing
First brought out through Tor Books in 2021 on the 16th of November, this would be the first book in a series of the same name. Set in the same world as many of Cat’s previous books, it can easily read by itself, with it being its own self-contained story. A science-fiction adventure with baking, it’s a fun mix of genres, drawing from a whole range of different and diverse influences.
Located at the far flung edge of the known universe, the TwiceFar station sees Niko Larson there as he was previously Admiral in the Grand Military of the Hive Mind. Happy to work in her Last Chance Restaurant there, she’s finally free to work with the rest of her unit free from the ravages of war. Taken by a sentient ship, Niko and her crew are forced aboard the ship by pirates, and they must do whatever it takes to break free and return to the restaurant. Will they be able to manage it and break free, can they survive this ordeal, and what will happen once they’ve finally put the past behind them?
Using elements of light-hearted space opera as the backbone of its story, there’s also some suspense and intrigue there too. Keeping it all together, Cat makes it an extremely engaging story, allowing the audience to feel as if they’re really there too. Keeping the reader guessing, there’s also plenty of heart and warmth there too, as they willy surely want to come back for more time and time again.
