Cathy MacRae is a bestselling and award winning author of historical romance novels. Her novels known for their deeply researched story lines and strong heroines are regularly nominated and win awards. Macrae has also written some of her works with DD Macrae, her longtime partner.
Even though she was born in Texas and grew up in Tennessee, she has lived in several different places over the years. She spent a couple of years in Alabama before she made her permanent home in the Arbuckle Mountains.
In her earlier years, she earned a bachelor of science degree in Animal sciences and for several years she was an employee at a veterinary hospital. When she is not writing her novels, she can usually be found spending time with her husband and two children.
She also likes to tend her garden, write, read, cook, garden and attend Scottish festivals and art fairs. Macrae is active in the writing community and is a member of the Celtic Hearts Romance Writers, NTRWA, and the Romance Writers of America.
Macrae always had stories in her head from a very young age and one day she decided it was enough and that she had to get them out. However, it would take a year or so before he thought of becoming a published writer.
During this time, she was reading a lot of romantic suspense novels and she wanted to silence a voice that had been going on in her head for years. Once she decided to become published, she decided to go all in and joined a local writing group. It was a fun experience and she got all the support she needed to realize her dreams.
Unlike many authors, the publishing process was a breeze as she got the call as soon as she submitted her first manuscript. She got the call while in a meeting for her local writers chapter when she saw an editor’s name on her phone’s notification.
It turned out to be an offer to publish her work and it was big news at the meeting as she shared it with the people that had helped her grow over the years.
Cathy Macrae embarked on her career believing she was meant to write romantic suspense novels. After several years of classes, conferences and querying, a friend told her she could find some success with historical romance. She was surprised when her novel was the winner of the Golden Claddagh contest Celtic Division.
It was “The Highlander’s Bride” which opened the doors for her to try her hand at writing historical romance in which she has found a lot of success. As for her biggest influences, Macrae cites works such as “The Far Pavillions” by MM Kaye that taught her that there are at least three sides to an issue.
She has also been influenced by classics such as “Tom Sawyer” and “Chaucer,” to romantic novels that feed the happily ever after predilection she has.
“The Highlander’s Bride” by Cathy Macrae is a novel set in 14th century Scotland where chaos reigns between the Barde and Scott clans. To bring the generation-long feud to an end, King Robert II of Scotland makes a decree that Lady Miriam Barde and Eaden Laird Scott need to marry as soon as possible.
But then marriage plans go awry and King Robert tells Eaden that he has to get back to the negotiating table or lose his title and lands. With no other choice he decides to kidnap Miriam Barde, only to find that the young woman he believed was his bride was her lady’s companion.
The woman in question happens to be Mary Marsh who suddenly finds herself in a fight against an unwanted marriage and freedom from the nobleman. She will not accept her new role as Lady Scott but by this time Laird Scott has realized his error.
But he has become so attached to the feisty Marsh he accidentally married that he is determined to show her that she is more than duty to him and that he loves her. Will their new found love be able to endure despite the many challenges it will have to face going forward.
Cathy Macrae’s novel “The Highlander’s Reluctant Bride” is another interesting story set in 14th century Scotland. King Robert II is determined to protect the Macrory clan’s lands from marauding pirates and the Lord of the Isles. To keep the bad men out, he sends Lord Rnald Scott, one of his best men to hold Scaurness Castle.
At the Castle is the ailing Laird Macrory, awaiting the return of his son who according to rumors has gone missing on the battlefields of Northern France. If the laird dies before the son is found, Ranald will be proclaimed the new laird and have to marry the headstrong daughter of Laird Macrory.
Lady Caitriona believes she is the rightful heir and ruler of her clan in place of her brother. She does not like that the king has sent a man to oversee her people and the castle. Ranald Scott is a distant relative of the Macrory clan and she has no trust of him, which is made worse by the fact that he was her nemesis in childhood.
She is soon in a panic as she receives news that tells her that the king has decreed that she marry Ranald. Treachery, pirates and a four year old are what they will need to overcome to find a chance at love and happiness. But it will take a lot before they can even trust each other and learn to love each other as they should.
“The Highlander’s Tempestuous Bride” by Cathy Macrae is a story set in the 14th century that once again follows the feud between the Macrory and Macraig clans. Laird Ranald Macrory had called a meeting of the local lords to deal with a recent resurgence in thievery and piracy.
At the meeting, he had noticed the incredible chemistry between his daughter and the son of a man he considered his worst enemy. What follows is a hasty private and personal declaration between two young lovers whose acts are resulting in growing animosity between neighboring clans and between son and father.
When the Lairds and their villages are attacked by pirates, Gilda finds herself caught between yearning for love from a man she hardly knows and two families. The relationship between Ryan and Gilda develops quickly even though their futures could not be any more unclear.
With passionate and emotional sexual scenes it makes for a thrilling romance story.
