The time is 1945 and the setting is Barcelona. The period is after a war has ended, and now the city of the world is recovering from it all. The city sits in the shadows and tries to tend to its wounds. Meanwhile, Daniel is waking up on his birthday. He is eleven years old and finds out that he is no longer able to recall what his mother’s face looked like.

He is very upset by this, naturally. His father decides to try and cheer him up. They may have lost his mother long ago, but this book dealer is going to let him in on a secret. He tells his son about a cemetery where there is a library of forgotten books. It is tended to by the guild of dealers in rare books in Barcelona and it is the place where novels that have been forgotten about by the rest of the world go to until they can find people to care about reading them once more.

He is hoping that his son will find some distraction in this and hopefully heal his heart. He convinces Daniel to pick a volume out of the many on the shelves. The one that he selects is said that it will possess a meaning for him more special than anything else.

Daniel really enjoys the book that he picks out. It is written by Julian Carax and he enjoys it so much that he decides that he is going to go and track down the work of Carax and read it all. Then he finds out the horrible truth that someone has actively been working on getting rid of every single book and copy of the works of this author.

As it already may be, Daniel may be the only person that has a copy of a book by this writer. He has no idea that this quest has started up something big that may threaten to bring up one of the darkest secrets in Barcelona.
