Charles Elton is a successful published author.

He first started writing Mr. Toppit 15 years ago, back when he worked as a literary agent representing the estate of AA Milne (famously known for writing Winnie the Pooh). He found out more about the story of his son Christopher, who would eventually come to dislike the fame brought to him by his father’s books. To shape that idea and put it in a more modern context was the thought that would become the start of Elton’s novel.

Through the various years that Elton spent writing, he recounts that another phenomenon happened in the world of children’s book publishing, Harry Potter. All of a sudden, his concept of a modern series of children’s stories that effectively take over the world did not seem so out there. What started out as a story about his boy hero Luke Hayman who had been made famous by the books of his father got larger, widening into an examination about the mechanics of fame and a journey to a literary tipping point that would have devastating consequences for the characters in his book.

Mr. Toppit would come out from Viking/Penguin in England. It has done very well and in addition to being popular with readers has also received a lot of media interest. This was helped along by the book being selected as one of the Richard and Judy Summer Reads, which is similar in the UK to something like Oprah’s Book Club. Other Press is publishing the novel in the U.S.

Elton recounts that he had the sketchiest notion of where the book would go when he started writing it and at the end of the day the only thing that he was sure of was the fact that the children’s books inside his novel would go on to be famous in America. He followed the story of Laurie Clow, a radio presenter who ends up colliding with Luke and his Family while on a trip to England– an event that becomes a catalyst moment that could end up changing all of their lives.

Charles Elton has served as a designer and an editor in publishing before going on to become a literary agent. He has worked in television since 1991 and worked for a decade plus as the executive producer in drama at ITV. His productions include Syrup, an Oscar-nominated short, The Railway Children, Andrew Davies’s adaptation of Northanger Abbey, and the series Time of Your Life, produced in association with WGBH Boston’s Masterpiece Theater.

Arthur Hayman is a screenwriter who has not done too well in the field and has decided to become a children’s book author instead. When he gets hit on accident by a cement truck in London, it turns out that his final dying moments are spent with Laurie Clow, an American tourist just passing by who may end up bringing posthumous fame to his series The Hayseed Chronicles. The books feature the enigmatic Mr. Toppit, who is prominently featured in the books.

Arthur does not survive to see the books be successful and reap their rewards. Instead his legacy is borne by his family— Martha his widow, and their children Rachel (who is very fragile) and Luke (who has suddenly become famous and somehow immortalized thanks to being the inspiration for the main character Luke Hayseed).

The success means that others want what they can get out of the phenomenon. This includes Laurie, a woman with an agenda of her own that will change their lives. Meanwhile, Martha, Rachel and Luke are struggling to bear the burden of their grief as well as what they have inherited.

This book takes course over several decades, bopping from the British film industry post-war to today’s competitive show business world in LA. An engaging novel that is really based off of the true life experiences of the Winnie the Pooh family (a.k.a. the Milnes), this is one story that you won’t want to miss.

Cimino: The Deer Hunter, Heaven’s Gate, and the Price of a Vision is a 2022 book by Charles Elton. This is a biography and the first to come out featuring the life of filmmaker Michael Cimino, who was critically derided, and includes a re-evaluation of the very same film that destroyed his career. Love nonfiction and portraits of real people? Then you are going to really enjoy this work!

Michael Cimino is a director who was known for two films. These include The Deer Hunter, the powerful movie about Vietnam that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 1979, winning Cimino the title of Best Director in the process.

The other film is Heaven’s Gate, which was known for being the original bomb at the box office. The movie had an initial budget of $11 million and from then on the western kept going in Montana. It kept getting longer and the budget grew to over $40 million. By the time that it was put out, reviewers panned it and it failed at the box office– so magnificently so that United Artists studio went out of business. This was the end of the author era in Hollywood.

At least that is what conventional wisdom says. Charles Elton is a noted television producer and an author who goes into the making and what came after this movie, giving a different view to Steven Bach’s. Bach was an executive who was one of the ones responsible movie, writing a harsh book about the movie that helped to cement the opinion that Cimino had hurt the movie industry ‘beyond repair’.

The result is a biography that is full of detail that vies a complete revisionist history about the filmmaker. Including interviews based on Cimino’s friends, peers, collaborators and even enemies, this is the story of Cimino as never before told and one that movie fans won’t want to miss.
