Charles Todd is a name that represents two authors. The two writers, Caroline and her son Charles Todd, write novels on crime. Their stories mainly revolve around the issue of the World War One. They live on along the eastern coast of America. Interestingly though, their books are set in Britain. Charles is middle aged while his mother is a little advanced in age but she carries herself with such grace.Like Agatha Christie and her famous character Hercule Poirot, the Charles Todd team has also written a series of novels with a key character Ian Rutledge. Ian Rutledge is an inspector who survived the war and comes back home to continue with a normal like as a police inspector. The other novels under their name are the Bess Crawford series and two separate novels. The novels are creatively woven with themes and stories that resonate well with most readers.
It is worthy to note, that the pair of Caroline and Charles Todd became authors by chance. They wrote the first manuscript in 1994 expecting to get just a mere critique from the editor, but to their amazement, the editor was thoroughly impressed and their first novel, A Test of Wills was published. That is how their careers as authors kick started and they have not looked back since. Since then, they have written other novels such as Wings of Fire, Legacy of the Dead, An Unmarked Grave among others. Their books have been well received by readers which gives them motivation to keep writing. Notably, their novels have themes that readers can relate to at an emotional level. They have a unique style of writing that distinguishes their books from other writers.
Their novels have been recognized and awarded various accolades in the literary world. For instance the novel, Search The Dark won in the 1999 Reviewers Choice Award in the category of Best Historical Mystery. In the following year, The Legacy of the Dead was ranked number three in the New York Times Notable Book list and was also nominated for the Antony Award. Their other books An Unmarked Grave and A Question of Honor won the Agatha award in 2012 and 2013 respectively. This is a clear pointer to how the two writers have established themselves in the crime writing genre despite their late entrant into the field.
It is amazing to see how their novels have been able stay relevant and claim a readership during this internet era. Their novels have defied the odds to top the best sellers list in Europe. This is proof that there are book readers despite the advancement in the communication technology. Therefore, the print industry is not going to fizzle out any time soon with the ready market for such books.
The two are well educated which explains why they are open -minded and have been exposed to many cultures. The Mother has a degree in English, Literature and History while the son has a Degree in communication with a bias in Business management. They are also avid readers according to what they said during aninterview with a media station. The mother and son unique team also attributed their success in their writing career to the culture of reading and story telling that has been in the family for a long time.
The writing career has not come without a price though. The two have had to sacrifice their leisure time to create ideas and research on historic information. Their hard work has usually paid off as is evidenced by the deep well researched content of their novels. Writing a book requires a lot of introspection and careful planning and their experience has not been any different. They said during an interview with a British media house that they have always managed to cooperate and work together when developing a story for a book.
The two camera shy authors are hardly seen in the media. They are content in living a private life away from public scrutiny. The mother stays with her long time husband but the son has been divorced for some time now. Their joint writing venture has always been a wonder to their fans as well as the husband and father. But somehow, the two manage come up with a story that flows from the beginning to the end without a sign that the story was composed by two independent minds. That is a mystery that only the two writers understand.
The phenomenon of two writers collaborating is however not very surreal, Dick Francis also wrote his crime novels with the help of his wife. The only difference is that the Charles Todd partnership is between blood relatives. However, Instead of having conflicts now and then, the two work in harmony. The two writers are also not full time authors. They have their own private careers besides writing and only write novels as a hobby.
Their novels have not yet been adapted into movies but the fans have been inquiring when that could happen. Most fans would like to see how the stories would play out in a TV series or movies. The stories could make a thrilling screen story and make viewer’s imagination run wild. The Bess Crawford novels in particular have had a wider fan base pushing for a movie based on the novels. The two authors have said 2012 in numerous forums that they look forward to having their books adapted into films so that they could reach a wider audience. Therefore, the interested directors in the film industry have a task to liaise with the authors and make the readers’ dreams come true.
In conclusion, the future of the Todd pair writing career appears promising. For as long as the two writers continue to pursue
their writing, passion they will always have a ready market that they have won over the years.Based on the lives of these two, it is never too late to become a writer if you think you have a talent for weaving words into a beautiful story. With enough dedication, sacrifice and hard work, a writing career can be in the offing for any one. We just hope to read more crime based stories from the two writers and wait to see some of their best novels incorporated into films.
