Charles Whiting
Charles Whiting was a thriller writer who also wrote under his Duncan Harding, John Kerrigan, Klaus Konrad, Leo Kessler, and Ian Harding pen names. Born in York, England, Whiting went to Nunthorpe Grammar School before joining the British Army at the age of sixteen. He served under the 52nd Reconnaissance Regiment before later going to Hollard, France, Germany, and Belgium, where the second world war was in its last stages. As a soldier, Whiting experienced first hand the conflicts between high-rank generals on the American and British sides. These came at a huge price, and the author manages to bring all this information into his writing. Whiting died in 2007, and by that time, he had over 190 published works to his name.

The Battle of Hurtgen Forest
The Battle of Hurtgen Forest tells the story of a least talked about war that leftover thirty thousand American officers either dead or injured. Between September 1944 and February 1945, two US armored divisions 8 US infantry were stuck in Hurtgen, otherwise known as “The Green hell.” On those hilly woods and through a bunkers’ network, the American soldiers faced the German soldiers. Casualty rates rose to 50 percent, and time must have been tough for those who were expected to keep fighting for their country. The saddest thing is that those in high command, oblivious of the challenges the men on the ground were facing, were comfortable in their offices as their colleagues died in the field.

While it was clear that something was wrong given the high number of casualties, those in high command refused to admit any mistake. There was the army’s pride and many careers at stake, so more troops continued to be poured, and the slaughter went on unabated. The motive behind this battle had already lost its purpose, so, unfortunately, many continued to meet such senseless deaths. The author paints a vivid picture of events as they unfolded, making you feel like you are right there with the soldiers, witnessing your colleagues get mercilessly butchered. While the soldiers who died during this trying time may have seemed like a statistic, Whiting’s descriptions make them come to life, so it is easier to understand their level of sacrifice and commitment.

This battle is an example of the price soldiers pay for their seniors’ pride and rash decisions. For four months, America was involved in a senseless war they lost. The battle could have been avoided, or the high-ranking officials would have found a way of dealing with the issue. Given the numbers lost in a short four months, a little bit of planning would have saved many lives. While the content is heartbreaking, the story’s language and fluidity will keep you glued to the pages. As one of Britain’s best military writers, Whiting writes with authority and from experience. He has managed to bring different characters to life while pointing out what would have been done differently to change the situation.

The Battle of Hurtgen Forest is a detailed book that anyone interested in the second world war will find intriguing. Everything from the battle scenes to the wrangles happening from within is well done, and after you start reading, you will remain glued to your seat to the end. The book is about 290 pages, and despite the historical element, it is so captivating. Whiting writing is unique, and he has a way of drawing you in and keeping you interested all the way to the end.

Hunters from the Sky
Hunters from the Sky take you back to the second world war, where General Kurt Student and Hermann Goring led the German airborne force to introduce a new way of warfare. From the moment the airborne force hit the ground, they captured airfields and seized bridges with a lot of precision. However, they also suffered great losses, and many great soldiers die in battle. While there was a bold rescue mission aimed at saving German soldiers trapped in enemy lines in France, there were also mistakes that costed a few lives.

From the first page, the author takes you through the German Parachute Corps’ exhilaration and terror from the first drop in 1940 to the 1945 bloody demise. He also points out the parachute division’s role in the Holland and Belgium attacks and the Crete capture in 1941. There is also information on the Mussolini rescue in 1943 and the activities that went on in Italy, France, and Russia as the German soldiers worked to halt advancing enemies between 1944 and 1945. This information is detailed and well explained, so even those who do not know anything about this war will understand.

Even if you have read many books on the second world war, this book gives it a whole new dimension. Most books on this topic also do not put as much emphasis on the materials available during this time. The German soldiers had a lot of advanced weapons, and their courage throughout the war was outstanding. The battle scenes are well explained, making this a book any military enthusiast will find exhilarating. Since the author was part of those men who saw things as they unfolded, his account is more detailed and manages to bring those scenes to life.

Hunters from the Sky are a detailed account of the second world war’s happenings, especially the German Parachute corps. The author captures the courage of the soldiers who risked their lives for those they left at home. While reading the happenings in battle is thrilling, you cannot help but wonder about those individuals who lost their lives and lived the rest of their lives with serious injuries. Whiting was quite talented in his writing, but he had the advantage of having experienced some of the battles in the second world war. His writing maintains respect for those who sacrificed their lives for their countrymen while still highlighting some of the mishaps that would have been avoided.
