Cheryl Bolen is an author of more than thirty fiction romances from the Regency era. Over the years, her novels have been in several prestigious contests including the Daphne du Maurier.
Given the popularity of her works, they have also been translated into more than eight languages and won the Holt Medallion in 2006.
In addition to winning so many medals, her works have also become bestsellers on the likes of Amazon and Barnes & Noble. She has now become known for penning some blockbuster marriage of convenience stories.
Her lighter works have been compared to the works of the likes of Julia Quinn and Georgette Heyer while the emotional ones have been compared to the works of Mary Balogh.
Before she became a bestselling author, she worked as a journalist since she holds dual degrees in journalism and English from the University of Houston and the University of Texas.
In addition to her bestselling novels, she also contributes articles to the likes of “The Quizzing Glass,” “The Regency Reader,” and “The Regency Plume.”
When she is not writing her novels, she loves reading about dead English women, traveling to England, and watching the UT Longhorns.
Bolen wrote her first full manuscript after she got inspiration from Mary Stewart’s writing. The work would then be published in 2012 as “Capitol Offense” when she was just 25 years old.
However, the manuscript never sold and it was not until she published seven novels and sold her first historical fiction work in 1997 that she published her first manuscript.
She published her debut work “A Duke Deceived” in 1998 and the work garnered critical acclaim and was the winner of Notable New Author.
Still, Cheryl Bolen had begun writing from very early on as she was a journalist in college high school, and in newspapers before she penned her first fiction work.
She remembers being excited when her 3rd-grade teacher asked the class to pen a paragraph-long story and she could not have been more excited.
When she was a high school senior and with no idea of what career option to pursue, she had one college that sent her a catalog that had journalism as one of the majors.
She immediately knew that is what she wanted to do as her love for reading was transferred to the burning passion to write.
While it does seem like she achieved success really fast, nothing could be further from the truth.
Cheryl Bolen was driven to pen historical romances set in the Regency era after the fourth manuscript she had written won many contests but publishers refused to publish it.
Most of the publishers refused to publish on the grounds that the work did not fit snugly into a single genre. In fact, one editor who was judging one contest had told her that if she penned a historical romance with a pre-1900 setting she would look at it.
The only Regency period fiction she had read was Georgette Heyer’s works and as such, she did not have much understanding of the period. Still, she soldiered on and wrote a manuscript that Harlequin Historical purchased a few months later.
She would then develop regencies for Love Inspired Historical since at some point she developed a love for inspirational romances. Cheryl now has more than fifty romance novels to her name alongside many other nonfiction works, novellas, and omnibuses.
Cheryl Bolen’s novel “The Bride Wore Blue” introduces Thomas Moreland. He has been dreaming Of Felicity Harrison, a young and beautiful noblewoman who saved him from death.
While he was very successful in India and was making a huge fortune, not a single day could go by when he was not thinking of her. All he could think about was the sweet silky voice, her fair loveliness, and his desire to make her his.
Since that time, Felicity Harrison had become a widow and when they met she did not recognize the young highwayman she had rescued a few years earlier.
She is dealing with the advances of an arrogant man who intends to use his money to make her do what she does not want to do. In exchange for introducing her sister to Society, he promises to save her family from being ruined.
While there is nothing she wants more than to ignore the man, she just cannot snub him. She forces herself to bear the man’s presence but the more she is with him, the more she feels drawn to him.
Why does Thomas Moreland who has a humble background seem more noble than any of the men from her social class?
“With His Ring” by Cheryl Bolen is another interesting novel in “The Brides of Bath” series.
The lead is a woman named Glee Pembroke that refused countless marriage offers since she has secretly had a crush on Gregory Blankenship, the best friend of her brother for years.
When she learns that her crush will lose most of his fortune if he does not get married by the time he turns twenty-five, she goes to him with a proposal that he agrees to.
But what she the man is unaware of is that she has made an elaborate plan to win his heart. She intends to do everything she can to make him happy which may include mimicking fast women and their behaviors since he is known for liking such women.
On his part, he starts asking himself why he married Glee as she can sometimes be maddening. When they got married, he believed they would have a lot of fun but recently he has been finding her exasperating at every turn.
She persists in wearing her bodice so low and he hates that other men have been flirting with her. He cannot understand how he has become a jealous man when what he has is a sham marriage.
Somehow, he is longing for a real marriage and he just cannot understand what is happening.
Cheryl Bolen’s novel “The Bride’s Secret” is the story of the Earl of Rutledge named James Moore. Ever since his senior took a bullet for him while they were working in the Peninsular, he has felt responsible for Carlotta Ennis, his wife, and his young son.
He feels so guilty for the man’s death that he offers to marry the lavender-eyed damsel. Even though their marriage was never to be one of love, the torturing presence of Carlotta has James desperate to make her his wife for real.
On her part, even though she did not love James, she accepted his proposal because she was desperate. What she did not know was that over time she would come to hunger for and crave his touch.
But she thinks herself unworthy of the man she married and has been keeping a dark secret from him. She keeps asking herself if she will still hold her in high regard or turn away in disgust when her secret is uncovered.
