Fic: Why Fanfiction is Taking Over the World(2013)Hardcover  Paperback  Kindle

The combined pen-name of two respective American Young Adult fiction authors, Lauren Billings and Christina Hobbs got together to create the Christina Lauren label that now house their unique brand of fiction. With both their talents combined together they have made a serious impact on the Young Adult literary industry, as well as the adult fiction category too. With a number of titles under their belt, they’ve also managed to gain studio interest as well, turning the heads of Hollywood producers looking to adapt their work for the big-screen giving their work the cinematic treatment.

Early and Personal Life

Both being American, they came together as part of a collaborative effort all due to them being of a similar mindset and writing style, as they found their approach to the genre, along with their choice of genre, worked well together. They have been writing partners for a long time now accumulating a number of titles under both of their belts. With them both being focused on young adult and adult fiction it has been a perfect match, serving them well throughout both of their careers.

With a Ph.D in neuroscience Lauren Billings has a clear idea of the human psyche and what makes people tick, giving their characters a sense of realism that’s unparalleled. Before she took up a career in writing full-time she was working in a laboratory studying and doing in-depth research. Now she makes one half of the Christina Lauren writing team, as she she’s married to another scientist, and they have two small children together.

The other half of the writing duo is Christina Hobbs, who also spends a lot of her time within a junior high counselling office. She is also married with a teenage child, and she also spends her time seeking inspiration as she writes full-time with her partner. Working together they find themselves to be on each others wavelength when it comes to ideas and the basic principles of creative writing, something which has served them well to this day.

Sharing each others ideas and skills they are each an equal talent combining their respective skills to create all of their work. Not often is a partnership so strong, but it has managed to survive a long time, something which their scores of fans are grateful for. With plenty more titles from them on the horizon, there’s a lot more expected from these two, as they’re showing no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Writing Career

Starting out recently with their first book ‘Beautiful Bastard’ published in 2013, they made an impact on the literary scene straight away. Not only that, but they now have Hollywood interest in this particular title, as Constantin Film is looking to make it with Jeremy Bolt slated to be producing it. This was the first in the Beautiful Bastard franchise, as there are a number of other titles in the series now following this.

As their work gets translated into different languages too, there success is now travelling internationally as well as just nationally. Getting awards along with their film studio interest, their success is both critical and commercial, with more and more flocking to their work everyday. As their writing career grows from strength-to-strength, it appears that this success is going to continue from now on into the foreseeable future.

Beautiful Bastard

First published on the 12th of February in 2012, this was to be the book that begun the Beautiful Bastard series that was to follow it. Taking a set theme and narrative arc, it manages to chart the progress of its characters, looking at them from a variety of different angles. It also manages to capture and perfectly encapsulate the essence and the tone that both Christina and Lauren were going for.

Set in the high-stakes world of big business and media, this features Bennett Ryan as its key central protagonist, or antagonist, as the case may be here. He might be hard-working, determined, and one to never jeopardize all of his success, but all that might soon change as temptation is placed before him. Facing up to a difficult decision has never fully fazed him in the past, but something is different about this particular person, something he can’t quite put his finger on, as he comes face-to-face with the beautiful new female assistant who he suddenly realizes there and then that he wants her with all of his body. Chloe, also finding herself attracted to him, must come to terms with her passion, as they both try to make amends with their feelings for one another and try their best to move forwards. What will become of them both? Will their passion ever truly be satiated? Can she ever truly date a beautiful bastard?

One of the more fantastical entries into their Young Adult range of novels, this paranormal romance was first released on the 14th of October in 2014. Working as a stand-alone title, this manages to capture a more haunting set of qualities, both in tone and style, clearly displaying a new range for the two respective authors. The overall ambiance also reflects this as well, lending it a more ethereal presence than that of their other novels, along with the characters as well.

Featuring Lucy as it’s central protagonist this time, she is somewhat of an enigma from the outset, having no memory of how she got to where she finds herself, or why she is there. Colin is her respective love interest who finds her, as the two of them must work out together what exactly is going on. Coming together may prove to be a little bit more difficult than expected though, as they must overcome their boundaries before they can ever hope to truly unite and become an item together. Lucy and Colin must break through the barriers that separate both of their worlds if they ever hope to be together for at least a fleeting moment. Will they ever get to become an item? Can they overcome their barriers? Is it possible to reach a state of the sublime?

Read your books first from our library, then purchased them to enjoy their nearness as literary “friends”. I tried the audio version also. I really felt like a voyeur.
