About Christina Skye

An American author of immeasurable talent during her lifetime, the novelist Roberta Helmer, also known as Christina Skye under her pen-name, was well known for her highly creative and inventive novels. Infusing elements of science-fiction and fantasy into her stories over the course of her career, she would largely focus on the genre of romance. This would lead to her becoming one of the most prolific authors of her generation, creating stories that would last for many years to come.

Early and Personal Life

Born on the 19th of July in 1950, the writer Roberta Helmer would grow up in Dayton, Ohio, in the United States. Coming from a rich and colorful history, she was the descendant of one Adam Helmer, a hero of the American Revolutionary War, giving her work a textured and vibrant legacy. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by Ohio State University, she would gain he doctorate in classical Chinese literature, along with becoming fluent in Japanese, French and Chinese.

All of this would come to color her work and output in the years to come, as she would draw from her studies heavily, allowing it to shape her stories and imagination. This would see many of her titles also using her love of Chinese history, with many of their classic literature tropes influencing her narratives. Living in the McDowell Mountains of Arizona, she would write regularly, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire to this very day.

She passed in May 2018.

Writing Career

Using her love of history, she would take this passion and create entertaining stories with mass-appeal that would attract audiences worldwide. Featuring tales of hardened men heading off on adventures, along with stubborn women who were smart and fierce, she wrote with both intelligence and wit. Many of her stories would also include outsiders looking to fit into the confines of society and struggling to do so.

Creating the name of Christina Skye, she would write her first novel under the pen-name titled ‘Defiant Captive’, which would also be the first in her ‘Regency Era’ collection of stories. Writing a number of series over the course of her lifetime, she would mainly focus on historical romances, paying close attention to detail and authenticity. Prior to this she would also write poetry collections, such as ‘The Poems of the Han-shan Collection’ in 1977, all of which made her a leading figure within her field.

Key to Forever

First published in 1997 on the 1st of January, this was initially released through the Avon publishing label to a high degree of anticipation. It would mark the fourth title in the Draycott Abbey series of novels, which is why so many readers keenly awaited its arrival. Taking the story in a whole new direction, it would develop what came before, whilst remaining true to the tone and intentions of the previous titles.

Bringing in elements of history, this is a fun and inventive novel, clearly showing why Roberta Helmer and her Christina Skye had become such household names. Paying close attention to detail, she really brings the world to life, giving it a sense of immediacy and realism quite unlike any other. The characters are also extremely well developed, allowing them come alive for the readers, almost speaking directly to them in a sense. This would pave the way for further sequels in the Draycott Abbey series, making sure it would become an important and essential part of the Helmer’s literary legacy.

Code Name: Princess

Initially released through the Dell publishing label in 2004, this would mark the sixth title in the ongoing ‘SEAL and Code Name’ series of books. Following on from the previous titles, it manages to take the franchise in a new and exciting direction, whilst also remaining true to the originals. Developing the characters and the world, it really evolves the arcs overall, giving them a renewed sense of vitality and immediacy.

Funny and witty in equal measure, this is the ideal escapist fantasy for anyone looking for a casual read to catch up on. The characters are inventive and the situations are fun, whilst also lending it an air of suspense and tension that carries it along perfectly. Travelling across the world with its story as well, it uses a number of different locations in its narrative, making it a diverse and interesting novel. With its characters being easy to relate to as well, it’s easy for readers to lose themselves within it, feeling as though they can really understand the plight of the protagonist.

Thrown head-first into a world of Navy SEALS, along with ransom deadlines putting her against the clock, she find that she may be in for one extreme ride. Dealing with it all as only she knows how, she initially finds herself hurled in over her head, but quickly becomes accustomed to it all. As the twin sister of the heroine from the first book, Jess is different in that she isn’t an FBI agent like her sister Summer. Will she be able to cope with it all, navigating this new world? Can she deal with everything coming her way? What will become of her as she adopts the code name: princess?

      She actually passed in May 2018 so there will be no more books in that series.
