Author Chrystle Fielder has always loved and used natural remedies. Her mother always used natural cures for things like sunburn, colds, sprains, bruises, allergies.
This love continue even after she graduated with a degree in the field of communications from Boston University. She would dabble in some other vocations afterwards like advertising and producing television in Hollywood.
She moved back to Greenport, New York in the year 1998 and started her writing business as she wanted to write full time and be her own boss. At the time, her focus was on health (mainly alternative medicine, including natural remedies). She has written some pieces about natural cures for different publications.
Fielder has written non fiction books that focus on natural remedies, this started in the year 2009. In her fiction, she writes cozy mysteries that include “A Natural Remedies Mystery” series (only natural that she write about natural remedies in fiction too). Her fiction debut was in the year 2012, with the release of the novel “Death Drops”.
When not writing her stories, she spends time with her three dachsunds (named Wallander, Fletch, and Holmes) and her two cats (Tuppence and Tinker); all five of whom are named after famous fictional detectives. She also likes walking on the beach, spending time with friends and family, gardening, and enjoying cozy mystery novels or watching mystery shows (including shows like “The Mentalist”, “Murder, She Wrote”, and “Elementary”).
“Death Drops” is the first novel in the “A Natural Remedies Mystery” series and was released in the year 2012. Dr. Willow McQuade, N.D. is a twenty-eight year old doctor whose specialty is natural remedies and decides to take a break. She goes to see her Aunt Claire (who owns Nature’s Way Market and Cafe, located in Greenport, Long Island). Rest and relaxation becomes the furthest thing from Willow’s mind after she finds Aunt Claire dead in the store. There is a strange smell coming out of her mouth, kind of like almonds, and a bottle of flower essences near her.
Despite her Zen nature and liking of yoga, Claire did not shy away from people. In fact, she was quite confrontational towards some. She held different meetings for different causes, weekly, in the store. The police seem to think that the cause of death was an accident. Willow believes that she might have been poisoned.
Things take a turn for the worse when a valuable recipe for an age defying formula (called Fresh Face) is taken during a break in. Someone also tries to kill Willow. She gets desperate to find a way out and goes to Jackson Spade (who is a young cop) for help. The two set to try to solve the case, in a natural way. This is through some luck, common sense, and hard work.
Fans of the novel like the way the book includes some natural remedies to be used in real life. The story is quick but you can still keep up with things. It is a fun read that keeps readers engaged and interested throughout. Some are ready to read the next books in the series.
“Scent to Kill” is the second novel in the “A Natural Remedies Mystery” series and was released in the year 2013. Willow McQuade is invited by Simon Lewis (her ex-boyfriend) to a party for cast and crew for a new television series. It is held at Long Island’s Bixby Estate, a very scenic place. She is eager to look around at the exclusive lavender farm the property has. The whole field of the stress reducing herb, which is her favorite, cannot sooth the effects of murder.
Even the psychic star of the show could not have foreseen Roger Bixby’s death. He was Simon’s new girlfriend’s estranged husband and owner of Bixby Estate. Simon has been arrested and needs some help from Willow to fix things.
Willow looks around the mansion, and offers natural cures to the tension of things. While doing so, she finds out about another unsolved murder, one that is very similar to this case. She wonders if the alternative source of the crimes might have been supernatural. Can she solve the case before someone else dies?
Fans of the novel like Willow and sympathized with her wanting to prove that she is a real doctor. She is very intuitive and very knowledgeable in the field of herbs that helps further the investigation she works. The other characters add another element to the book, and the author does a wonderful job of bringing in the many different eclectic suspects together. The ending was satisfying as well.
“Garden of Death” is the third novel in the “A Natural Remedies Mystery” series and was released in the year 2015. Dr. Willow McQuade has finished up a new medicinal plant garden for the Maritime Festival that Greenport puts on every year. She is now ready for the festivities to start. The grand opening does not go as good as it should, due to Willow finding another contestant dead in her garden. It is Dr. Charles White, another contestant of the show.
Her boyfriend, Jackson Spade is suspect number one because of the recent fight the two had. Willow already knows that she has to fix things. It will not be an easy feat due to vandals and other applicants’ vendettas that are wrecking her garden.
She finds some buried treasure that may belong to the legendary Captain Kidd. This raises the stakes that much higher. Could that have been what Dr. White was trying to find? Was that why he was killed, so someone else could lay hands on it first? With Jackson’s help and Simon’s help, she goes after the clues to find the truth that someone wants to keep hidden.
Fans of the novel have found that Fielder has found a balance between the education of homeopathic remedies and writing this time around. Some found that this was the best of the series so far. This is another winning novel from a great series of books, and readers hope this series continues for many more installments. It has a well written story and a mystery that was superbly crafted.
