Clare Pooley
Clare Pooley is a British literal fiction, and non-fiction author and owner of the popular blog Mummy was a Secret Drinker. After graduating from Newnham College, the author joined the world of advertising, where she worked for twenty years. She then decided to leave the corporate world and her successful career to concentrate on raising her children. It is while at home that Clare started a blog and later graduated to writing novels. Clare currently lives in London with her husband and three children.

The Authenticity Project
The Authenticity Project is a story of unexpected friendships and love. Seventy-nine-year-old Julian Jessop is an artist who keeps pretty much to himself. Julian thinks that people are mostly dishonest with each other. This pushes him to write the truth about himself in a green notebook that he labels the Authenticity Project. Julian goes a step further and leaves this book in a local café where someone is sure to find it. Monica, the café owner, finds and reads the notebook. She then writes about her vulnerabilities. Later, Monica leaves the journal in a bar hoping someone else will continue with the chain. She is also determined to help Julian with his loneliness.

Others find the green book and leave it with a part of their deepest selves. Over time, six strangers come together thanks to the green book. The group meets in Monica’s Café and realizes that that complete honesty can, at times, bring good fortune. All the strangers are open about their lives, struggles, and the mistakes they have made so far. The dynamics of Julian’s marriage to Mary are highlighted here in a way that he reads like a true story. The author also highlighted the lives of addicts, seniors, and young moms, including the struggles these people confront daily.

Aside from Julian, you also get to hear from the other five strangers. Meet characters who have gone on drugs, struggled with motherhood, and engaged in infidelity, among other undesirable vices. The stories are raw, and some will move you to tears. In the end, their stories merge thanks to their honesty beautifully. All the characters are believable, quirky, and fun, and it is refreshing to read about the transformation they go through in this book. So, what happens when six people who are not afraid to speak their truths meet? Friendships are born, loneliness is cured, and self-reflection becomes the norm. At some point, some will find love again in a way that will simply warm your heart.

This book is a beautiful reminder that we only have one life to live. Whatever you are going through in life, you have to choose yourself first. There is no need to live a lie. When lonely, getting out of your comfort zone to meet new people can make all the difference. You also need to remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side. Appearances can be deceiving. The writing is beautiful, and the narration is just epic. Join six strangers who are on a journey to self-discovery. Lives will be changed, and it will not be surprising if The Authenticity Project motivates you to improve your life.

The Sober Diaries
The Sober Diaries is a non-fiction book on the author’s journey to sobriety. Honest, uplifting, and insightful, this story takes the reader through the life of a woman who was successful in her own right but lost focus at some point in her life. Clare Pooley, just like most women, found it hard to balance between a family and a successful career. She made a decision to leave her role as managing partner in one of the biggest advertising agencies to take care of her family. While she did not anticipate the transition to be easy, her life took a turn, she did not see coming. Depressed, overweight, and now a mother of three, Clare found herself taking more than one bottle of wine in a day.

Clare is quick to notice that her drinking is getting out of hand. After random searches on the internet on how to know you are an alcoholic, she decides to start a blog on the same. While she has her family’s support, her online platform connects her to people who are going through the same experience. Soon, Claire learns that she is not alone on this journey. Determined and with a will to live a better life, Claire sets to get off alcohol, get rid of that beer belly, and enjoy more family time by the end of the year. She updates her blog regularly and highlights her successes and challenges in a way her followers can understand.

This book documents a year of Clare’s life. During this year, she starts to cut down on alcohol in an attempt to get her life in order. It is also the year she is given a breast cancer diagnosis. Thankfully, by the time the year is ending, Clare is cancer-free, sober, and two stones lighter. She also enjoys a healthier and more rewarding life. Aside from highlighting Clare’s story, this book serves as a motivation of sorts for people who feel that they are better off without alcohol. Although the author did not have a rock bottom moment, the improvements she makes over a year are admirable. The book also touches home on the importance of valuing life and living it to the best of one’s ability.

Sober Diaries is a funny and upbeat story that will teach you how to live and enjoy your life to the fullest. In an easy conversational way, Claire tells her story of struggle and victory over a habit that was taking her life away. The author is self-deprecating and narrates this story without constraint. Whether you are battling alcoholism or anything else in life, this book has many lessons to offer. From self-evaluation to acceptance and seeking help, this tale has it all, and much more. In the end, it is refreshing to see that Claire was able to overcome and reclaim her life.
