Coco Simon always dreamt of opening a cupcake bakery. However, she was afraid that she would actually eat all the bakery’s profits. When she is not daydreaming about cupcakes, Coco Simon loves editing children’s books and she has written approximately 100 books for children, teens as well as young adults, which is very much less than the number of the cupcakes that she has eaten. Cupcake Diaries Series is the first time that Coco Simon has mixed her love for cupcakes with writing. Let’s take a closer look at the two earliest books in this series by Coco Simon.

Katie and the Cupcake Cure

This is the first novel in The Cupcake Diaries. Scholastic Book Wizard has placed this book at around a 3rd grade reading level which is most appropriate for this book. It’s a great book about starting middle school which takes a rather pleasantly upbeat by encouraging angle on it.

The book is told through Katie Brown’s perspective. We find Katie Brown miserable on her first day at middle school. Callie, her best friend came back from the camp boy-crazy and part of an entirely new group of friends. When it is made clear that her friend Callie is in the Popular Girls Club (PGC) and Katie Brown isn’t invited to join, she suddenly feels incredibly alone. Katie realizes that if she is going to survive through middle school she has to seriously regroup herself and find new friends. But how? Katie bites into the cupcake that her mother had packed her for lunch and closes her eyes for a second. The sweet treat makes Katie happy—finally something goes ultimately right. Looking around the table, she notices the other students seeming lost as well. This gives her an idea. With 3 new friends she forms a club as one ways for spreading the cupcake love and also earns some cupcake cash in the process.

This is one great book to pick up with hopes of using it while at work. In fact it is one grade level above what usually works best most people at work. It is a pretty cute way for one to pass a day’s breaks.

Even though this book doesn’t really push boundaries there’s still a kind of innocent pleasantness to it that many people really like. Supportive friendships that are formed through baking, the openness about all the differences in family structure and social class, and the hint that the 4 ‘mean girls’ will eventually mature and come around in the course of this series.

Mia in the Mix

At the Park Street School, you’ve got the Popular Girls. These girls even have the Popular Girls Club. However, what happens when you are not invited to join? Do you just start an Unpopular Club? Definitely no, you start the Cupcake Club!

The Novel Cupcake Diaries: Mia in the Mix is also written by Coco Simon and it’s the second book in this series. The book has a total of 18 chapters and 156 pages. In the first novel it is all about Katie Brown and how she starts The Cupcake Club (CC). This second book in the series Cupcake Diaries is told through Mia’s perspective. Like the other club members, readers will have a chance of knowing the new girl within school. Mia has never experienced a problem in making friends before in her life. Her motto is to always be friendly and open with everyone. Nevertheless, not every person at Park Street School believes in the culture of mixing in with various groups of friends. When the Widespread Girls Club takes some interest in Mia’s keen sense of fashion and they decide to recruit her, she has to choose between them and Cupcake Club members. What is the girl going to do?

Mia is one of the new kids to school and she has no new friends. Mia’s parents are divorced long ago and her father lives in Manhattan. She is feeling lonely and finds Alexis, Emma and Katie. They then decided to have for a fundraiser for the dances. This group of new friends decides to bake three dozen cupcakes so as to raise money. The Popular Girls Club (PGC) also decides to establish a both but they won’t tell any person what they are actually doing. They set up a makeover booth. Popular Girls Club is convinced by the fact that they’ll beat everyone and then win the major prize at the dances. At the end, it turns out that Cupcake Club has won the fundraiser by raising the most amount of money.

In this novel Mia runs into lots of trouble. For instance, after winning the fundraiser and getting the grand prize, they will have to wear school sweatshirts to school on Monday. As a matter of fact, Mia liked wearing sweatshirts. As a result, being a fashion designer, she decided to make her customized sweatshirt into the sling bag. However, her friends didn’t like the fact that she didn’t wear it as a sweatshirt just as they had done.

Mia has a very hard time with life because her father lives in Manhattan and she has to spend money on a weekly basis so as to be with her dad. She has a lot of friends in Manhattan and she misses them also. Another hard thing for Mia is the fact that she starts hanging out with PGC and her other friends don’t support that. Her mother is a big time fashion designer and she’s holding a certain fashion show. The major problem is that Mia and CC are meant to make cupcakes for this show yet the PGC’s also want to go for the show. Mia knows well that that isn’t a good mix. This leads her into another problem because she will have to decide who to offer last 3 tickets to. Does she give them to her real friends or the nasty and popular girls?

At the end of this book each and everything works out well and Mia finally decides to dump PGC so as to stick with her real friends. Indeed, the book has a truly interesting plot that you will definitely enjoy. Furthermore, it is perfect for any age and gender.
