Colleen McCullough is one of the most renown novelists and she is recognized because of her tremendous efforts. The novelist died on the 29th of January 2015, at the age of 77. She was an Australian novelist who was renown for working in a number of genres. Despite her huge collection, she is best known for her 1977 novel, the Thorn Birds. This was one of her most noticeable novels that curved a notable niche in terms of popularity.

She was born in Wellington, New South Wales, Australia, in 1937 and her family used to reside in Sydney. She started off working odd jobs, which saw her go back to the Sydney University. She had studied at the university for a while earlier. At the University of Sydney, she managed to acquire a neurophysiology bachelor’s degree. She established the neurophysiology unit in 1958, in Sydney. She moved to England in ’63 and worked in Birmingham and London at the hospitals. She then earned a neurophysiology master’s degree at the London University. She was offered a position at the Yale University Medicine School in the US, which she took. She worked there from 1967 to ’76, and this is one of the periods that shaped her career in the world of writing.

Previously, Colleen McCullough used to write just for fun, but she started writing for the sake of publishing as she was at the Yale University. Here, she wrote her first novel in 1974, Tim, which was about a love affair between an older woman and a learning disabled man. Though the first novel was well received, the second one had more success. The Thorn Birds was her second novel that made her more popular. The second novel was also about a love affair, which was between a young woman and a Catholic priest.

The first novel, Tim, which is about two characters, Mary Horton and Tim. Horton is complacent with her solitary life, which considers comfortable. She carries on with her life, until she meets one man, Tim. Tim is a handsome young man that is still maturing. Tim lightens up the solitary life of Mary with his youthful virtue. With her boyish virtuousness, Tim manages to shatter the middle aged Mary, who is a spinster. He promises her a special love, which he had to live in a world of his own with the spinster lover.

The second novel, the Thorn Birds earned McCullough an advance of almost $2million. It was about one Catholic Priest, and a young woman. Father Ralph de Briscassart was agitated to make a choice between the love of his life and the Church that he served. She ends up remaining in the Church and became a Cardinal, though he had no idea that he was the father of Meggie’s son. The boy goes to study priesthood in Rome, where his father is the Cardinal, but the father doesn’t realize yet. Dane, the son is involved in a tragic accident, which leaves Meggie confused to choose between the son and the daughter. The sister, who was an actress decides to give up acting and travel to Rome to cater to the body of her brother. The original love between the Father and Meggie ends up in pain and suffering.

The amazing works of McCullough saw her books being adapted for the TV, in TV Shows and movies and among them is Tim. Tim was developed into a movie and was a great hit in the 1979. The movie was played by Mel Gibson, along with Piper Laurie. Mel was the young Tim while Laurie played the middle-aged woman, which was a success as well.

The second novel, The Thorn Birds was such a long story, which couldn’t be developed into a normal movie. For that, it was produced into a TV miniseries that was played by Richard Chamberlain, along with Barbara Stanwyck, in 1983.

Another novel that was developed into a movie was An Indecent Obsession. This was a movie that was produced in 1985, with Gary Sweet as the main star. In 1996, another McCullough’s novel was produced into a TV Show. The Thorn Birds, The Missing Years, was made into a TV mini series. It was more of a sequel of the previous version that was produced in 1996. The TV mini series covered the period that the novel was removed from the production, which was 14 years long. Basically, the novel is a complete set that was omitted in the TV production, so this was a cover of the missing sections. The lead cast, Richard Chamberlain, was maintained in the new production.

There are some other novels that Colleen McCullough worked on, including the Morgan’s Run, which was done in 2000. The novel was about a convict that was sent to Australia, in the 18th century and the life that surrounded him. The Independence of Miss Mary Bennent is another novel, which was produced in 2008. This novel was a novel that predicted the future life of Jane Austen, who was presented in the 1813 novel, Pride and Prejudice.

She also covered a murder/mystery series, which included the On, Off, Too Many Murders and the Sins of The Flesh, which was done in 2013. The series featured a man, Carmine Delmonico, who was a police captain. The author also wrote a biography of Roden Cutler, V.C in ’99.

She was named by the Australian National Trust as a living treasure in ’96. In addition, she was also named an Order of Australia officer later on, in 2006. Colleen McCullough has earned other honors such as when Wesley Walters painted her and the painting was in the Archibald Prize finalist. The painting was considered as being a top art for a recognized person. She was awarded a Letters Degree for a detailed research for ancient Rome novels. The award was given to her in ’93 by the University of Macquarie.

Colleen McCullough has had a number of awards and honors, simply for her amazing work in authoring super interesting novels, both inspirational, educational and entertaining. She was basically a talented author, who focused on different genre in novels. To date, the trend continues and this is no doubt that this is one of the best writing talents in the world of writing.
