The Constable Molly Smith series is a series of mystery novels written by the well known Canadian author Vicki Delany. There is a total of 7 books published in the series till now, between the years 2007 and 2014. The 8th book of the series is also completed and ready to be published by the author. All the novels of the series are set in the fictional town of Trafalgar in British Columbia, which closely resembles another town of British Columbia called Nelson. Also, the series features the main protagonist in the form of Molly SMith, who is described as an author in the Trafalgar police department. She belongs to that department of the police officers who have to wear the uniform and take walks around the town, checking the streets and the alleys for any kind of crime. Being a field police officer, Molly gets to ask many questions so that it becomes easy for the real detectives to track down and catch the criminals. She seems to love her job very much.

Molly Smith always finds her wherever there is trouble and tries to keep the town free from all kinds of criminals. In the beginning of the series, she finds that trouble is brewing in the bucolic and small mountain town of Trafalgar in British Columbia, where she lives and is stationed as a police officer. Molly Smith comes to know the land and money left by an American who had come to Trafalgar as a draft dodger from the Vietnam War. She also comes to know that the draft dodger has left the money as well as the land for the town and has asked to use them only for the building of a garden in order to honor the draft dodgers. Molly Smith is described as a young police officer who desperately tries to become a detective. But, she seems a little bit overeager after getting her first assignment. However, her character keeps on getting more and more interesting as the series progresses. Even her family members seem very interesting and colorful. As she follows the controversial land where the garden was said to be built by its owner in the memory of the draft escapers during the Vietnam War. It seems that it is still as controversial as it was in the beginning.

One of the initial novels of the Constable Molly Smith series was published under the title ‘Valley of the Lost’. It was released by the Poisoned Pen Press publishing house in the year 2009. The plot of this novel featured the main characters in the form of Molly Smith, John Winters, and Lucky Smith. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, the dead body of a young woman is discovered in the bucolic and fictional mountain town Trafalgar in Bristish Columbia. It is believed that that woman had died due to overdose of heroin. Her small baby was found lying beside her dead body. Initially, the case appeared to be an easy one and there was nothing much to investigate about. But, several restraint marks are discovered on the body of the victim, which suggest that her death might not have been completely because of heroin overdose. It appeared that there was another angle in the case, that the investigating officers needed to find about.

As Sergeant John Winters and Probationary Constable Molly Smith get involved in the ever growing investigation of the life and death of the young woman, it becomes quite personal for them. So far, they are aware of only two things about the dead woman, first one is that her first name was Ashley, and that she has a small boy of 3 months old. Other than these two things, they were very desperate to find out who she really was and was her death only due an unfruitful drug deal or there was something more sinister into the case. The small baby of the victim is adopted by Molly’s mother Lucky Smith, and it seems that the small kid is the only clue that can help to solve the murder case of his mother. In the meantime, John Winters’ wife named Eliza considers about taking up a modelling contract. But, she seems to be going to be a part of the same resort development that has been ripping the community of close-knit and helpful people apart. Molly Smith and John Winters begin to suspect that the controversial project of the resort development might have forced a member of the quiet community to take the brutal step of committing a murder. Soon, they are about to discover some disturbing and unexpected truths related to the murder case of the young woman and the seemingly quiet community in the town of Trafalgar.

One of the other initial novels of the Constable Molly Smith series written by author Vicki Delany was titled ‘Negative Image’. It was published in the year 2010 by the Poisoned Pen Press publishing house. The plot of this novel is once again set in British Columbia, Canada and continues to feature the main characters in the form of John Winters, Molly Smith, and Lucky Smith. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, the Trafalgar town in British Columbia is shown as experiencing a hard winter season. One of the famous photographers of the country named Rudolph Steiner arrives in the town in order to do a feature photography session on the mountain tourism of the town. He is accompanied by his wife and assistant, who is young and beautiful. The main reason for which Rudolph visits the town of Trafalgar is that he wanted to reconnect with the woman who had left him around 25 years ago in order to marry another man. Eliza Winters was a young, naive, beautiful, and an internationally known supermodel, around 25 years back. But today, she is married to Sergeant John Winters and is no longer young and naive as before, but she still looks very beautiful. Soon, Rudolph Steiner is found lying dead in his luxury hotel room. He is shot in his head from the back and all the suspicion quickly falls on Eliza Winters. Now, John Winters finds himself trapped in the most difficult decision, whether to be loyal to his wife or his job. As the investigation into the case begins and the past lives of Eliza and Steiner are studied, John Winters comes to know that did not exactly known the woman who was his wife for more than 25 years. On the other hand, Molly Smith is shown as suffering from her own problems and is not able to help Sergeant Winters in the case. She finds that the peaceful town of Trafalgar has turned into an uproar due to a series of B&Es, and her boyfriend seems overprotective of her and fights with her colleagues. Also, she is watched for her every move by a vengeful stalker. Molly Smith cannot even help her mother, Lucky Smith at the time when tragedy has stricken her family.
