Beverly Lewis resides with her husband David in the state of Colorado in the United States. She has written many novels and is the creator and writer of the Courtship of Nellie Fisher series. The series starts out with The Parting, followed by The Forbidden and the third book, The Longing.

The Parting is the debut novel in the exciting series of fictional novels by Beverly Lewis, the Courtship of Nellie Fisher. The main character in this book is of course a young woman named Nellie Mae Fisher. She is going through something really tough because her younger sister Suzy passed away really recently, and the grief and the pain of losing someone that she loved so much is more than she can bear.

Now it has been about 100 days since Suzy moved on, and though dealing with her untimely death is still tough for Nellie, she is slowly starting to feel those deep wounds begin to heal. It was a tough thing to go through, and sometimes she feels really alone. But she may just have a friend in Caleb Yoder.

Her thoughts are still on Suzy and there are rumors about her younger sister that are still flying around. Caleb is handsome, but is it too soon after her sibling’s passing to even think about anything like dating? On top of that, Caleb and Nellie belong to the old country, The People who practice the Old Ways and stay true to their heritage, their traditions, their beliefs, religion, and lifestyle, at all costs.

Caleb and Nellie are just starting to realize the depth of their feelings for one another. Still, there are individuals that are working hard behind the scenes to try and keep the two of them separated. The young couple may be courting each other, but now they are at risk of being torn apart. As it turns out, Caleb’s very own father may be on the side of breaking them up forever.

It seems as all the odds are set against the two of them. But when you are so young and have a pure affection for each other like Nellie and handsome Caleb do, what could be wrong about it? Some people don’t mind, but their relationship is seen as challenging their heritage and what they call the Old Ways. When it comes down to it, each and every patriarch may have to decide what they believe in and what they want to do.

Amish farmers are also causing a stir as a growing amount of them are starting to want to bend the old ways just a little. The farmers in Honeybrook are starting to place demands for tractors and other things that are certainly modern conveniences– and thereby forbidden.

A revival may just end up adding to all of the tension. It may not be long before the community is up in arms about what has happened. Passions are starting to get involved and now tempers are starting to flare up. The community and the trusted Old Order and finding that they are quickly being pushed to levels where they may just end up reaching a breaking point.

Now Caleb as well as Nellie must work hard to weather this storm that seems to have descended upon the time. They must look for their families and each other as they are caught in the middle of a divide that threatens to tear their entire community in two.
