Cynthia Harrod Eagles is a popular British novelist also known as Emma Woodhouse and Elizabeth Bennett. The writer who first started wring in 1972 was born in Shepherd’s Bush in London England in 1948. She later went to Burlington School, an all girls charity school established in 1699 after which she studied English, History and Philosophy at the University of Edinburg and University College London.
Interestingly, Cynthia did not immediately start of as a full-time writer; instead, she worked as a sales manager for Coca-Cola for some time, a cashier at Woolworths and a Pension Officer for BBC London before deciding to take up writing fulltime in 1979. While in University, she won her first award- The Young Writers’ Award in 1972 in her very first novel; The Waiting Game.
It should be noted that that the very much acknowledged series, the Morland Dynasty was the very reason she became a full time writer. The writer has since written over eighty books in a variety of genres although she is known to be love Romance and Mystery themes.
THE MORLAND DYNASTY
Originally intended to have 12 volumes, The Morland Dynasty is one of the longest series and has been well appreciated as it has 34 volumes and one is still being written to date. The series comprising of a number of historical novels starts with The Founding based on 1434 featuring The War of the Roses and Richard III of England. The novel is a family saga about Edward Morland, an ambitious forbidding father to the timid Robert, a sheep farmer whose father has arranged for him to marry Eleanor Courteney- a strong-willed young woman, also an orphan, from the influential Plantagenet’s family. The marriage is supposed to raise the Morland’s family status.
Eleanor is clearly disgusted at the thought as she is not only not attracted to Robert but is also secretly in love with Richard-Duke of York. However, as she is a woman of her time, her objection does not count. The union of the two however eventually to their surprise is characterized with passion, love and affection for each other eventually bringing about the creation of The Morland Dynasty. This keeps them going even as the ongoing civil war threatens to tear everyone apart.
The most recent book; The Phoenix is based on the 1931 post-crash depression and the 1936 Abdication Series in Britain, a continuing story of the Morlands, featuring Edward and Mrs. Simpson.
THE BILL SLIDER SERIES
The Bill Slider series is yet another internationally acclaimed work of the talented Mrs. Eagles of a mystery genre whose main character is Detective Bill Slider. The first novel in the series; Orchestrated Death was published in 1991 and received great reviews as a debut. Cynthia Harrod-Eagles however later confessed that she only wrote the novel for her own relaxation purposes and initially had no intention of publishing it. Lucky for her fans she did as it was only the first for her 17-novel series. Orchestrated death is a story about a murdered young violinist; Anne Marie whose death has few to no clues at all which finds Detective Slider at a time where he has to choose between his wife and his new found love. Most critics described this novel as masterful, rich and romantic with a sophisticated ending and a perfect literary pitch.
Her most recent novel; Star Fall is the story about the mysterious death of the seemingly charming antiques expert Mr. Rowland Egerton found stabbed to death in his lavish West London home. As usual, Detective Bill Slider and his team take on the case to investigate exactly who killed the man. Given that Mr. Egerton’s partner John Lavender found the body, could he have murdered him? Or was it someone else, a burger perhaps, as some antique items are missing. The story keeps the reader guessing throughout as the victim turns out to be a man so different from the universally loved artist and finally ends in a startling discovery as to who really killed Rowland Egerton.
Cynthia’s mystery novels generally keep the readers at the edge of the seat as they paint quite a picture in their police procedural London-set theme. Detective Slider, first described as middle-aged and menopausal depicts an intelligent experienced Inspector who always finally cracks even the hardest of his cases.
AWARDS
Cynthia Harrod Eagles has so far received two awards, the first being the Young Writers Award back in University for her book The Waiting Game in 1972. In 1993, her romantic novel, Emily the last book of the trilogy-the Kirov saga, earned her the Romantic Novelists’ Association Romantic Novel of the year award. Emily is set in 1910 and includes World War I and the Russian Revolution. Apart from the series and the trilogy, Cynthia has over thirty single novels most of which are still very popular.
The British novelist’s work has been described as funny, witty and clever with a reputation of bringing her characters to life. Throughout her writing years, Harrod-Eagles has displayed a consistency in quality, creativity and imagination and has never once failed her fans. She has clearly researched in her themes depicting an author who knows exactly what she is talking about.
Her most popular book so far is the first of the Morlands Dynasty, The Founding which has 17 editions so far. It has been described as the yardstick by which all historical novels are based. There has however been speculation concerning the series which is said to be coming to an end due to increasingly low sales by its publishers arising from most people preferring to borrow rather than buying the book. However, it is expected that the writer will publish one last book in the Morlands Dynasty before finally concluding it.
The novelist is currently married with three kids and lives with her husband in London. Although she still writes full-time, Cynthia is also interested in music, mainly orchestra and occasionally plays and attends quite a few amateur orchestras. Apart from that she enjoys anything to do with wine tasting, horses, architecture and the English countryside. The writer is also a proud sponsor of the London Mozart Players.

So wonderful to see you mention the Morland Dynasty in the latest newsletter (Nov 1/23). I started the series in the mid-1980s and loved every page!
Thanks Stephanie 🙂
Just finished the third book in the Ashmore Castle series. Please tell me the fourth book is coming out soon. I am left hanging!!!
I just finished reading the 2 Ashmore Castle books and I loved them. I was surprised that there wasn’t a third novel in this series. Does Giles come back? Does Richard win over his dead father’s mistress? What happens to Nina? What about Speen and William?
Please tell me you are working on the 3rd novel!
I love your writing style, it’s so brilliant!
Thank you
Please don’t stop writing. I love your books!
Found a Morland Dynasty book at a garage sales. Since then I have bought ( and read) every one of your books. Well, I may have missed a recent Bill Slider. Thank yo9u so much for the many hours of pleasure.
