This incredible writer came to be, in Hopewell, West Virginia. Her father, John Tune Smith was a U.S Army veteran. Her mother’s name is Leatrel Smith nee Rylant. This makes the author to use the maiden name of her mother as her pen name. Her first four years since birth, were spent in Illinois. It is during this years that her parents separated and this led to her relocation to her grandparent’s house in Cool Ridge in West Virginia. During this time, her mum visited her few times in a year. Her mum attended nursing school after separation. She was brought up during the 1960s in the Appalachian region and this was a time when economic empowerment depressed. Kind local townsmen, extended family as well as her grandparents stepped in and supported her with a loving, safe and nurturing environment and all she could wish for was someone who could come for her. However, no one came for her and this gave her no other choice other than to get used to the rustic and poor life. There was no automobile, running water or electricity. As a result of this, Cynthia Rylant was not in a position to enjoy children’s books when she was young. All she had was comic books mainly and outdoor activities that were endless. Four years down the line, her mother relocated to Beaver, West Virginia and this was just nearby where her grandparents lived with her. This made it possible for her to live with her mother. Even in this new Beaver place, Cynthia Rylant did not find any libraries and bookstores just like in Cool Ridge. By the time Cynthia Rylant hit 13 years of age, her dad died, but they had not met again since he separated from her mother. According to her, since nature did not resent to her an opportunity even to bid farewell to her dad, this is all she required to be an author. The experience in West Virginia during her childhood have in a major way contributed much in her books. Most of her books have had an inspiration from her Appalachian life. Cynthia Rylant was fond of Robert Kennedy and they met when he was campaigning for presidency. After he was assassinated, Cynthia Rylant was greatly affected.

Cynthia Rylant went to school and colleges where she earned her degrees and even worked as a lecturer. What has greatly contributed to her great and talented work is her literature studies, back in the day. She has been an English Lecturer and so writing as a career did not harass her too much.
