D.W. Ulsterman is an amateur sleuth/cozy mystery author from the Pacific North West best known for the writing of the “San Juan Islands Mystery” series of novels. His debut novel was the critically acclaimed title “The Writer” that went on to win the Kindle Scout Selection Award in 2016. His other novels include “The Mac Walker” series, the “Race Wars”, “Bennington P.I.”, and the freestanding novel “Irish Cowboy”. He has been married for more than twenty-five years and together with his wife will often be found boating around the San Juan Islands in his home in the Pacific Northwest. He has two grown children both of whom are in university. When he is not writing he may be found fishing, watching movies, listening to music, barbecuing, sampling wines, and cursing around a gold course. Most of his interests can be found in his novels including the all action fights, classic rock music, and love for wild America. He asserts that his wife and children are the best things that ever happened to him.

As a male author, D.W. Ulsterman has been excellent in the depiction of Adele the female lead in his popular San Juan Islands Mystery series. According to an interview he gave to a magazine, his understanding and depiction of the female character is driven by the fact that he has been married for the best part of two decades. Moreover, he grew up in a household that had a very tough mother but who also tended to express her vulnerable and emotional side from time to time. Given that he is also the father of a teenage daughter also makes it easy to create a feisty Adele character, who combines all the characteristics he has drawn from the women in his life. For the author, writing of the character of Adele can be a frustrating yet thrilling adventure given that she represents the uncertainty and exciting period of one on the cusp of living on their own terms. Regardless of what one’s gender is, Adele makes it possible to relive those years in our lives.

The “San Juan Islands Mystery” series are about Adele Plank a young female journalist living in the San Juan Islands of the Pacific North West. As a journalist she gets to do all manner of interesting jobs interviewing some of her favorite people on the islands she calls home. However, as a journalist, Adele has that innate curiosity that always seems to get her in trouble as she tries to investigate mysteries in the lives of her subjects. The novels are small island mysteries which makes them very interesting and a little personal, as you get to move from island to island while almost getting to know all the characters. They are intriguing novels full of suspense and tension with a mystery that will keep the reader hooked until the very end. They typically include some very interesting revelations that resolve the why and the how at the very climax to make for an explosive ending that sets the stage for the next novel in the series. What makes the mystery so great is that one could read the mystery and the why of it several times and still get mind blown by the resolution. The “who” is not that much interesting as compared to many contemporary mysteries, as Ulstermnan makes the why very compelling in the overall scheme of things, which is quite an achievement. D.W. also goes the extra mile to give an epilogue to the story. These epilogues are not the typical end to story line epilogue narrated by the author, but rather they are an article written by the lead protagonist, Adele Plank. Plank writes about her feelings which provides some heartwarming emotion and a satisfying feel of the culmination of a journey for everyone in the mystery. Overall, the novels are excellently written with tantalizing and descriptive writing that fascinates and captivates, while sometimes freaking one out.

The award=-winning novel “The Writer” is a novel of misguided and lost love. The narrative is centered on the story of a misguided sheriff determined to keep his mentally challenged son from prosecution after he commits a crime. The demented son had kidnapped the wife of a well-known author believing her to be his dead mother. The author had been blamed for the death of the deceased woman and he had over time come to deem himself guilty. As a result of the vitriol and guilt, he had isolated himself and only went out when it was necessary. He spent much of the past quarter of a century living on his island that he had purchased off the Washington State coast. Now Adele Plank had been granted one of the rarest of things, a rate interview with Declan Stone, the reclusive author. Adele heads to the beautiful San Juan Islands, to the private island home of the author to get her once in a lifetime interview. What started as an exciting journey turns into a dangerous adventure of discovery. A mystery she uncovers has her scrambling to unravel a deadly and shocking case she never thought she would ever get a chance to cover.

“Dark Waters” is the exciting sequel that continues from where the first novel “The Writer” left off. After successfully resolving the mystery in the first novel, Adele Plank is back in her favorite isolated landscapes and seas of the San Juan Islands. Now a fully-fledged journalist after her graduation, she is determined to make a name for herself with the “Island Gazette”. Her first case is the shocking discovery of the brutal murder of a young Russian woman in mysterious circumstances. Adele Plank also gets herself into a romance threesome as she attracts the attention of two eligible bachelors. One is the island’s sheriff who heads a three man team, while the other is rich and mysterious man that introduces her to a secretive and famous guest. The mysterious murder of the young woman get everyone on the island on edge as old friends turn into foes and the sheriff who is supposed to be the chief crime solver turns into a suspect. It is now up to Adele to make the decision on just who she can trust in an island where she is still very much a stranger.

Being Irish born myself, I was intrigued by the title “The Irish Cowboy”. I absolutely fell in love with the concept of Hap Wilkes and truly enjoyed the series.
The last book referred to the San Juan Islands. So naturally I read “The Writer”. Absolutely your best book so far. I was hooked again with great characters like Adele, Declan, Lucas and Roland. I’ve become emotionally attached to Adele and plight to navigate life and crime investigations.
I’d like to thank you for your gift of storytelling and sharing it so well!

Is Book of Bloodbone the end of the S J Island series? My wife and I are enjoying the series and there are many unanswered questions and possible stories left to tell/read.

I read the series and can’t wait for the next one. Your characters seem so real I feel like if I rode a ferry to the San Juan Islands they would be there. The action kept me on the edge of my seat and I found it difficult to put the books down. Hope number ten comes out soon. In the meantime I will be starting the Irish Cowboy. Please don’t stop writing the San Juan series.

You are a very talented story teller and the San Juan Islands is a great location. I am a tad disappointed in Adele, as a woman she rubs me the wrong way. I am not fond of her at all. She is how men tend to see women who are journalists etc. I would have made her less harsh, with a great empathy for the men she comes in contact with. I spent my life working with men. They trusted me and felt like I was one of the guys. They jokers with me and trusted I wasn’t going to claim sexual harassment. I would love to see a female main character who didn’t stab men in the back to succeed or get her story. I am a non fiction writer or I would consider writing it myself. I look forward to your Bowman Boys! Absolutely loved the Irish Cowboy!! I am on book 2 of San Juan series. 😊 I love your series just not Adele so much. Thank you for writing about the Islands!!
