The Ghost Hunter Next Door
It’s the first book in the Beechwood Harbor Ghost Mystery series. The book stars Scarlet, who acquired the ability to see and talk to ghosts and help them solve their issues at a tender age. Her parents thought their daughter was delusional and was forced to stay quiet. After growing up and being on her own, she decided to drift and travel where chance took her.
She used to work on her way, but her parents had to take her back. Upon reaching the age of thirty, she thought that was the time to go back home and settle for something permanent. With the inheritance she got from her grandmother, she started up a business as a florist.
The business picked up well when she chose to work in a small Washington State beach town instead of Arizona, her hometown. She now decides to work on building her business while still helping ghosts in town.
Two ghosts moved with her to Washington, an elegant Englishman from the Victorian period and a wily cat that can now speak. Scarlet has also met a local friendly ghost who knows all the gossip in town. She is living an enjoyable life in the city, and something about it drew many paranormal to call it home.
Scarlet has learned how to adjust to the paranormals and has stayed to herself and out of the magic business to avoid getting noticed by unsuspecting humans. In the course of the story, you’ll see how she is summoned by an angry ghost and given a week to stop the TV show people reconstructing an old Victorian in town, failure to which the ghost will take action. A TV production company had bought the house to renovate and turn it into bed and breakfast.
The ghost blows a window on Scarlet’s shop, and at that point, she realizes how serious he is about it. She is not able to get rid of the TV crew so easily and seems reluctant to exorcise a ghost and tries to find out why the ghost is angry.
Together with the show’s security person, Lucas and Scarlet find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery that every person thinks is an accident. Finding out what happened to Rosie- the ghost in the Victorian home on the night she died.
Rosie claims to have been killed a few weeks before her wedding by the husband after she found him and the maid of honor, Wendy, in the bedroom. It’s twenty years now, and she has scared everyone away from the property. She’s so angry and has planned revenge for her death.
Scarlet is a complex character, and she seems affected by the absence of her parents and wishes that there was someone else who understood her gift. She has low self-esteem and suspects Lucas’ interest in her. She tries putting him off severally when her feelings make her want to make a connection.
On the other hand, Lucas has had a tough past in the military service and parental infidelity that shaped him. Scarlet is scared of relationships with people as she is used to being friends with ghosts only. Despite all this, Lucas sticks with her, albeit her withdrawals hurt him much. The seaside setting of the story made it more fascinating. The mystery was well crafted, with some twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.
Murder’s Witch
It’s the first book in the Beechwood Harbor Magic Mystery series. The book features Holly Bolt, who is not your normal witch and has been expatriated to Beechwood Harbor. He is given a last chance to start again while living in a house ruled by a ghost for paranormals. Holly has a lot of secrets and after a scandal destroys her life, keeping them isn’t easy in a town where gossip spreads like the wind.
While in the town, Holly works as a full-time barista. She lives with a vampire, shifter wolf, and a strange man on the third floor. The man starts sneaking into the house, and when she confronts him, he claims that he’s interested in hosting haunted tours in her home.
Holly’s instincts show her that there is something more, and just before she figures out what he’s up to, she finds herself involved in a murder investigation where her work colleague is the main suspect. She decides to help her friend clear the name, but she has to do it carefully or find herself in trouble with the paranormal society.
Holly has to solve the case fast before she is forced to leave her newfound home and live on the run. But with a paranormal investigator watching her moves, the mission is a little bit tricky. Then a war brews between the shifter and vampire.
To make matters worse, the ghostly owner of their house is on the point of breakdown and depression. Holly is not able to think out well about what is going on. She is determined to do everything it costs, or else she will be at risk of losing everything once more. Will she succeed in identifying the killer?
Garret does an amazing job introducing the reader to our heroine and secondary characters as he delights with a murder mystery. Murder’s Witch is a cozy mystery with twists and turns to keep the reader hooked to the story while guessing what will happen next. The story gives some information on the hierarchy in the paranormal world and the agency that monitors the displaced ones.
