Darcy Coates is an award winning author and Amazon and USA Today bestseller, and writes suspense and horror novels. Coates’ debut novel, titled “Ghost Camera”, was published in the year 2014. She loves ancient graveyards, haunted houses, mysteries and suspense. Her work reflects every single one of these passions.
She likes to spend all day in the library, research urban legends, and goes on bushwalks when she is not writing. She lives on Australia’s Central Coast.
Darcy lives with two humans and three cats, and has a garden filled with vegetables and herbs. She would like to get another cat, but realizes that is straying far too close to crazy-cat-lady territory. She loves forests, old growth forests where the trees are able to dwarf anybody that steps in between them. She likes to have a mountain range close by anywhere she lives.
“House of Shadows” is the first novel in the “Ghosts and Shadows” series, which was released in the year 2015. Sophie’s world is ruined after disaster leaves her family bankrupt. She is still getting over the news when she gets a solution that is unexpected. Mr. Argenton, who is a wealthy stranger, asks to marry her. It would restore her family’s fortunes, but would condemn her to a life in an unnaturally dark mansion that is hours away from civilization in Northwood.
Sophie has a tough time adjusting to her new position as the mistress over the desolate house. Mr. Argenton’s got cold relatives, and her husband is keeping secrets of his own. The house is more than it appears to be, making things worse. Mr. Argenton’s young cousin, named Elise, draws some terrifying images.
Doors slam, and inhuman figures start slinking through the forest that surrounds the house. There is a piano that plays in the middle of the night. Blood drips down from the ceilings. Sophie gets pulled to the terrifying truth of the house: Northwood’s ancient halls are being haunted by the family’s ancestors who died long ago. These sinister spirits made by grisly deaths are resenting her intrusion into their home.
She is trapped in Northwood and desperate to escape, her fate is made more complicated while she finds she is irrevocably drawn to the dark eyed and tall guy she married. She feels her feelings are reciprocated, but Mr. Argenton hides the house’s true self and the secrets he is keeping are dangerous to the point that they might just be unforgivable.
The haunting parts in the story is different, fresh, vivid, imaginative, and terrifying. You will be on the edge of your seat and you will want to finish as quickly as you can. Darcy Coates has penned an interesting story with tense moments, and the ending makes you want to know what happens next. Not a single moment of this was predictable, and holds the attention the entire way through.
“House of Secrets” is the second novel in the “Ghosts and Shadows” series, which was released in the year 2016. Sophie and Joseph’s escape from Northwood does not last long. The beast was able to survive and attached itself to Elise, Jospeph’s young cousin. Garrett writes to beg them for help. Sophie and Joseph go to meet him at Kensington, which is a long abandoned mansion that looks over a dead town.
The house has a small hope: its first owner dedicated her whole life to researching the monster that has possessed Elise. Garrett hopes he can find a way that is going to kill the creature and save his daughter.
Kensington is a dangerous building. Once the carriage departs, they are stuck in the collapsing walls and have to face the horrors inside. Shrouded figures hunt them, and whispers echo during the night. There are unmarked graves that are all over the property. The dead are nowhere near as restful as they appear to be.
Much like the first book, this was a quick, fun read, and was very well-written. This book is able to make you lose track of time, as the energetic narrative gallops on at full tilt.
“Ghost Camera” is the first stand alone novel, which was released in the year 2014. There are only a few cameras that are able to capture ghosts on film. The gift comes a huge price; ghosts are both hungry and resentful, and the cameras give them a rare chance to get at their favorite prey. Humans.
Jenine was not aware of any of this when she discovered an abandoned Polaroid camera inside a lighthouse. She thinks at first that the ghost looking shapes in the pictures are a prank or possibly a glitch, but then she gets hunted by the spirits. It forces Jenine into a lethal race to get free from the curse of the camera.
Fans found that this one freaked them out, and they read it during the daytime. The creepiness starts right at the start of the story, and just gets more intense the more you read.
“The Haunting of Gillespie House” is the second stand alone novel, which was released in the year 2015. Elle can’t believe the luck she’s having: she is house-sitting the gorgeous Gillespie property for an entire month. Hidden close to the edge of the woods and just an hour’s drive from the closest town, it has rich furniture and dark rooms that get her to explore the house’s secrets. There is a graveyard that is hidden behind the house, that have tombstones that have the same year of death.
If only the scratching in the walls would stop.
The dark and deadly history of the house soon gets tangled up with Elle’s life. In the middle is Jonathan Gillespie, who is the tyrannical cult leader and the house’s original owner. Elle quickly learns that his being dead does not mean he is gone.
Darcy Coates is an incredible author of horror, and this one is quite scary. She develops her characters in such a great way and uses words like no other author. These two things make the stories she tells more relatable and realistic.
