Chronological Order of Darkest Powers Books

The Canadian author Kelley Armstrong has been writing for a number of years now, with a quantity of fantasy novels already under her belt and published. Creating rich and vibrant worlds, she is widely regarded as on of the foremost voices within her field to date, having produced over twenty-one books so far and counting. This has lead to her becoming a publishing sensation not just nationally, but internationally as well, with her books achieving success on a global scale worldwide. With a strong imagination, as well as taking an in-depth look into her characters, she has also created many different series and franchises too, with ongoing stories and narratives. Building character arcs, she is seen by her fans and critics alike as a master of her craft, as she is able to keep her readers engaged and entertained throughout, right until the very last page. One such series that she is particularly well known for is that of her ongoing ‘Darkest Powers’ series, which is a part of a major franchise in of itself. Set over the course of three books, this trilogy tells the story of Chloe Saunders, a fifteen year old necromancer living in a world of the paranormal, as she comes to terms with her powers, hence the title. Taking a look into the practices of ‘The Edison Group’ they manage to give an insight into this shadowy organisation or supernatural scientists, along with their supernatural scientists. This was later followed up with the second trilogy ‘The Darkness Rising’, which went on to follow the character of sixteen year old Maya Delaney that time, whilst still remaining in the same world as the original series. Overall, though, they retained the same values throughout, remaining true to the central premise of the novels whilst keeping a distinctive set of rules to adhere to.

Published between 2008 and 2010, this series consisted of ‘The Summoning’, ‘The Awakening’ and ‘The Reckoning’, as they were the ones to set-up the overall franchise. There was also a number of short stories to also be published that were set in the ‘Darkest Powers’ universe, and these were ‘Dangerous’, ‘Kat’, ‘Divided’, ‘Disenchanted’, ‘Hunting Kat’, ‘Belonging’ and ‘Facing Facts’. These all helped to make up the richness of the world overall, creating a more in-depth and diverse universe for her many readers and fans to immerse themselves in.

The Summoning

Originally published in 2008 on the 1st of July, this was initially released through the ‘HarperCollins’ publishing label to much acclaim, as it set-up the overall series. Establishing the basic premise and the rules of the ‘Darkest Powers’ universe to follow, it managed to introduce the readers to the world and the characters for the first time. Not just that, but it also worked at providing an adventure for the main protagonist of Chloe Saunders to get involved in as well, thus bringing the audience in too.

Set in a world of ghosts and the foreboding, this series manages to create an ominous tone, whilst simultaneously not getting too dark for its readers. Taking place in an unseen version of reality, it manages to follow a coming-of-age narrative with a supernatural twist, as Chloe Saunders is a teenage unlike any other. Whilst she may be thinking about boys and relationships and wishing for a normal adolescence, she’s thrust into a whole alternate reality due the powers she is bestowed with.

Chloe Saunders was a normal fifteen year old teenager and everything was going as expected, all until one day she noticed a ghost and it noticed her back. Suddenly thrust into the world of the supernatural, she is seeing ghosts everywhere, as they become a regular occurrence, and that’s when she finds herself locked up in Lyle House. Apparently a ‘special home’ for teenagers who are troubled, it appears that there may be more to this place than initially meets the eye. What does she share in common with her housemates? Will she be able to uncover the secrets of what’s happening? Who has the summoning?

The Awakening

Initially brought out through the ‘HarperCollins’ publishing label once again, this was first published on the 28th of April in 2009, almost one year after the first. Following on directly from the previous novel, this continued the ‘Darkest Powers’ series, as it made up the second title in the franchise, taking the action forwards in the process. Carrying on in much the same vein as before, it manages to provide the reader with more of what they have now come to expect from the series, as well as providing some twists and turns along the way.

Still following along the lines of an adolescence being transformed into something else, Chloe Saunders returns for another adventure into the realm of the supernatural. Set in a world of the unseen it still manages to conjure up a dark and ominous tone, whilst simultaneously taking it forwards in the process as well. Chloe Saunders herself is now a little wiser to the world around her than she was before, but she’s still trying to come to terms with everything she thought she once knew being turned on its head.

Finding herself a living science experiment made real, Chloe Saunders must continue to contend with living in world she thought she once knew. Dealing with her genetic alteration at the hands of the Edison Group, she must cope with her newfound power of being able to see ghosts in her day-to-day life. With the power to raise the dead, she is now on the run from the clandestine organisation along with three of her supernatural friends; a werewolf, a sorcerer and a witch. Will they be able to get away? What does the group want with them? Who will have the awakening?

The Darkest Powers Series

Making up the third and final title in this series of books was the novel ‘The Reckoning’, which was brought out on the 6th of April in 2010, through the ‘Orbit’ publishing label that time. Knowing her audience and genre well, these are essential for those who are fans in any way shape or form of fantasy novels, as they are a shining example of their genre. Not only that, but they’re also great for their characterizations as well, as they have fully three-dimensional protagonists and characters that the readers can easily relate to. As well as that, her descriptions and stories are timeless in both their style and approach, something which will ensure that they endure for many years to come. Appreciated by both her critics and fans alike, they’ve really worked at taking the genre forwards, as they also work outside of her key demographic, as they appeal to a worldwide audience, with success both critically and commercially, something which will continue on into the foreseeable future.
