Dave Boling is an American published author and journalist located in the Seattle area.

Dave Boling was not always an author and first wrote as a sports columnist. He says that some of his best work is done around competition, noise, and chaos, chalking things up to being a ‘matter of discipline and focus’. Boling has been with The News Tribune for over a decade.

He wrote his first novel Guernica while being out on the road, following sports teams. He wrote parts of the historical fiction work of 361 pages in airports while on layovers, while on long flights, and while in hotel rooms. He would go back to his room instead of going to the bar with the other sportswriters and work on the book, set during the 1930s’ Spanish Civil War.

This is the story of the extended family of Basques, which are a minority group that has its own language and traditions of democracy. They have lived in the coastal areas and mountains of Spain (north-central) and France (the southwestern area) for centuries.

Boling chose to write about them because he married a Basque girl who had grandparents that had come from Spain to herd sheep in the American West mountains. They introduced him to Basque food, red wine, and did their best to try and teach them their folk dances, while also teaching him about their strong familial allegiances and a long history of oppression.

The book draws from real historical events as well as the black and white mural Guernica painted by Pablo Picasso, a Spanish native living in Paris. The result is a reflection on the horrors of war. Boling thinks that more people are familiar with this painting than with the historical tragedy that helped to inspire it, blending the story of the fictional Ansotegui family with the story of the painting.

Guernica came out and was received favorably, being published all over the world. It led to Boling being picked as a great new writer from Barnes & Noble and his book being displayed prominently in the stores. He also received a favorable review from Kirkus. The book was mentioned in the LA Times book blog and he was scheduled to go on book tours in America and Europe as a result.

The first novel has been described as ‘accomplished’ by Kimberly Witherspoon, his agent. She says what makes this book a standout is his ability to find a balance between these ‘human stories and authentic detail’. As a result, the reader is pulled into the lives of the characters and ‘what you learn about Guernica is effortless’.

The success of the novel has been humbling to Boling, who started writing it as a challenge to himself to see if he was able to do it. He went from having a finished manuscript to getting an agent to getting deals and having the book published and in stores in ‘less than a year’. While he has more novel ideas, Boling loves sports writing and switching between writing novels and for the papers, saying that he loves the change of pace.

The year is 1935 and Miguel Navarro discovers that he is in conflict with the Spanish Civil Guard. As a result, he makes his way out of the Basque fishing village of Lekeitio and tries to make a fresh start in Guernica, which is the center for Basque culture and tradition.

In the middle of this isolated bastion of democratic values, Miguel finds not just a new life but someone that he can live for. Miren Ansotegui is a dancer who is graceful and full of charisma. While she may have her selection of the bachelors living in Guernica, she is only able to zero in on Miguel. It is not long before the two discover a love that is stronger than war and tragedy.

Fiction and history come together here in this gorgeous novel that features the resilience of family and love and tradition as they deal with hardship. The bombing of this place was an experiment in total warfare by the German Luftwaffe leading up to the second world war. But for Basques, it was an attack on their ancient nation’s sole and a crime against humanity.

Boling goes into this event all over again and comes up with a picture of a people who are so proud and strong that they might just be willing to do what it takes in order to protect their country, values, and loved ones.
