Dave Eggers is the son of a school teacher and a lawyer. He was raised in Lake Forest, Illinois, Chicago. He attended the University of Illinois where he studied Journalism. It was during his time in the University that both his parents died of cancer. His father succumbed to lung and brain cancer while his mother died of stomach cancer. He was left to take care of his younger brother after this sad ordeal. This is a situation that later came to be one of his best works. Upon the death of his parents, Dave Eggers moved to California where he took on different jobs and later came to publish, ’A Heart-breaking Work of Staggering Genius’. Over the years, Dave Eggers has written many books and in most of his books, there is one thing that attracts readers and makes them look forward to his future works. This is the fact that he always uses real life experiences to tell a story; something that makes many people identify to the story’s he tells. The stories also generate different conversations which people like because they open up their minds to new thoughts and understanding of different situations.
One thing that can be said about Dave Eggers is the fact that he is an author who knows how to tell a story without disappointing the reader. This is one of the things that make his books absolute page turners and it is the main reason why he has so many readers and fans. There are a number of books by Dave Eggers that have really got a lot of people’s attention. The autobiography he wrote about Valentino Achak Deng, ‘What is What’ is considered to be one of his best works. This book is classified as a novel. However, Dave does a very good job of telling Valentino’s story that the reader has no choice but to flow with the story to the end. He tells a story of how Valentino a refugee from the Civil War in Sudan left his country and became a part of a group of boys known as ‘the lost boys’. The ‘lost boys’ went days without food looking for a way to get to Ethiopia while still fearing for their lives because they did not know what to expect or whether or not they were being trailed. He also gives an in-depth description of the life that Valentino Achak Deng came to live when he and the other boys are moved to the United States. This was part of the Sudan Resettlement Programme for the lost Boys. Majority of the people who have read this book say that it is impossible to put this book down. This is because Dave Eggers simply has the gift of storytelling.
‘A Heart-breaking Work of a Staggering Genius’ is another great book written by Dave Eggers. This was the first book that Eggers published. The book is about the struggles he faced in life after his parents passed away while he was still in the University. This was a very tough time for him since he was the only care giver left for his younger brother. Dave tells an incredible story of how he went about making sure his younger brother had all he needed and all the many challenges he faced on the way to get to where he was. The amazing thing about this book is the fact that it brings the reader to a place of empathy. The reader is able to put themselves in the author’s shoes and feel what they were feeling in the creation of the book. It is not many writers who are able to get their life story in black and white in a manner that is raw, honest and real. Dave Eggers however managed to do this. His story is a huge encouragement to a lot of people who are in trying situations and do not know how exactly to go about getting themselves out of it. Many readers, say that this book has given them courage and hope in tough situations. It is a great book that everyone who needs some encouragement or a good read ought to get.
Apart from writing very successful books, Dave Eggers has managed to get one of his best books to be played out as a movie. His book that got to be a movie is ‘The Circle’. In the book, Dave Eggers tells a story of how a leading tech company plans on ruling the planet by invasion of other people’s privacy. The movie is about a character by the name Mae Holland who has recently graduated and gets employed at ‘The Circle’. This is a dream company to work for because there are so many benefits that the employees get. As an employee in this company, you get to have frequent campus parties, a gym and housing; everything a recent graduate would want to get in her first job. There is however a catch. The catch is that all employees are required to interact on social media networks for more than a 100 times a day. They are required to share personal information about their family and themselves with the world. Mae has a hard time meeting the demand of the company but she later gets the hang of it and in time becomes the company’s favourite employee. They use her as a test to conduct a social experiment which they hope will help them rule the world. This movie is a perfect execution of Dave’s story and like his book, it got a lot of buzz and people could not stop talking about it for long time.
Dave Eggers is an author who writes for the general public. He knows exactly how to capture the reader’s attention and bring them to a place where it is impossible to put a book down. He is not only a good storyteller but also has the gift of expression, imagery and bringing different things into perspective. Any reader who is looking for a good book which will open their mind to different thoughts, give encouragement and shed some light on different situations ought to pick up a copy of one of Dave Eggers book. He is one of the best writers we have.
