Dave Wolverton is a science fiction author from Utah. He also writes fantasy novels as David Farland. He is the winner of several awards for the novel “On My Way to Paradise” which notably won the Best Novel in the English Language awarded by the Philip K. Dick Memorial. Dave is also the winner of the Best Novel of the Year Whitney Award, Best Young Adult Novel at the Southern California Book Festival, The Hollywood Book Festival Grand Prize and the Young Adult Novel of the Year at the International Book Award among many others. As a short fiction author, he is the winner of the Best Novellette at the Nebula Awards. He made history in 1998 when he had the most book signings in one day. Apart from his writing, he has also given talks and lectures in a variety of creative writing workshops and seminars. He has also worked at Brighton Young University as a professor of English. Among the many authors he has taught and mentored include James Dashner, Brandon Sanderson, Eric Flint, Jessica Day George, and Brandon Mull. Wolverton currently lives with his wife and children in Utah from where he writes his bestselling novels.
Dave got into writing as a high schooler where he has asserted that he was a huge reader of fantasy. He read and reread “Lord of the Rings” multiple times before he started looking for similar books with no luck. He soon realized that it was very hard to find the high quality of books he sought and thought that he would be better of making his own. He was one day telling his stories to a colleague at the meat cutting company where he worked when he suggested that he should take his stories and write them into a novel. He thought it was a good idea as he loved the prospect of writing his stories and then making money from them forever. Wolverton bought a second-hand typewriter and began writing whenever he had the time, though he was embarrassed about the manuscripts and hid them from friends and family. When he was nineteen and in college at Brigham Young University, he started attending writer conferences. Nonetheless, he was doing pre-med at the time and thought that he could pursue a career in medicine while writing on the side. He signed up for a writing class and it was the moves he made during this time that got him hooked into writing. “Charlie and the Wind,” a short story was the first work he ever published. It was a story of how emotional emasculation can result in negative outcomes in children. A small magazine named “Inscape” that was based at his college published the story. Since then he has gone on the publish in several leading magazines though his big break came when he published a story in “The Leading Edge” and soon after was winning contests that gave him the confidence to get into fantasy and science fiction.
Dave Wolverton’s “The Golden Queen” is a story of Gallen O’day a, a young warrior who goes out for an adventure out in town. Since the novel is set in an alternate Ireland complete with a forest haunted by Sidhe and talking bears, it is not out of place that the place for a little bit of fun would be a tavern. But the illusion is soon destroyed when an old warrior with an alluring charge comes onto the scene. The newest entrants are genetically engineered aliens that come from a different galaxy. Gallen takes a job from the old warrior who needs someone with the skills to protect his charge. The Tharrin which are the people he is charged with protecting are natural leaders as they are perfect. They have the portal key technology to travel through or connect the different galaxies. Inadvertently, Gallen, Orick his bear friend, and Maggie a young barmaid follow the aliens who lead them through the portal where they find a galaxy bigger and more technologically advanced than their own. But the alternate galaxy has decayed over time as it is now controlled by insectoid empire buildings that ate organized on a hierarchy based on the Strength of lord protector and the beauty of the golden queen. It is a beautiful science fiction narrative that combines swordplay and romance.
“Beyond the Gate” by Dave Wolverton is a novel set in the rustic backwoods of Ireland where Gallen O’Day and Maggie Flynn were born. In a beautiful paradox of time, the owner of the tavern where Maggie has been working is recently deceased and in his will leaves his estate to her. Maggie’s uncle who everyone believed was long dead makes an unexpected appearance. He was a minstrel that had run away from home many years ago and news had filtered back home asserting that he was dead. Since Maggie is not yet of the age of majority, her uncle intends to be the trustee of the estate. As her trustee and guardian, he halts all marriage plans between Gallen O’Day and Maggie as he believes these are not in his interest. After some wangling, a message comes through from Everynne summoning the two alongside Maggie’s uncle to go off-planet, where they are to help the Tharrin to accomplish a complicated but very important task. They are to fight the hive mind and Borg-like creatures that have invaded the world of the Tharrin.
“Lords of the Seventh Swarm” by Dave Wolverton is a beautiful science fiction story of three fugitives that survived the insectoid Dronon invasion of the world. Fleeing the wave of destruction wrought by the aliens, Maggie Flynn, Orick, and Gallen O’Day had made a desperate stand. Attempting to thwart the attack they went toe to toe with the queen of the invading aliens. They had little hope of winning the battle but Gallen had drawn upon all his reserves and finally defeated the Lord protector Dronon in ritual combat. The only thing keeping the trio away from the grasp of the aliens is an ancient system of portals that have made them invisible to the alien scout ships and probes. But they are finally stranded on Ruin, a planet off the known star charts and far beyond the portals. Lord Felph is the ruler of about a hundred inhabitants on the desolate rock they find themselves on. He is an eccentric but rich man who is obsessed with finding a mythic relic he believes will give him power over Space and Time. The relic is rumored to be on the floor of the Tangle, an ultra-dense jungle where no one dares venture given its reputation of harboring ferocious predators. No machine or human that dared venture into the forest ever made it back but with the aliens closing in on them, the trio has no choice but to head to the forest to try to retrieve the relic.
