David Thurlo is one of the well known American authors who has written some very popular books based on the mystery, thriller, romance, and science fiction genres. Most of his novels are based on the Native American themes. David has written all his novels in collaboration with his wife named Aimee Thurlo. Before going on to become a well established author of the mystery genre, author David used to work as a teacher. At that time, his wife was already a writer and used to work on the development of the plots of her books while David used to be out with his teaching profession. Seeing Aimee work with much dedication and passion, author David also became interested in taking up writing as a career. He began watching his wife while she used to write her novels and used to pay great attention to each and every detail of her writings. Soon, the two decided to write together and eventually produced some of the most popular novels in their writing career. Writing as a single voice, David and Aimee worked on some of their very popular novel series like the Ella Clah series, the Sister Agatha series, the Brotherhood of Warriors series, the Copper Canyon series, the Najavo Rez and Lee Nez series, etc.

Authors David and Aimee were married for more than 40 years before the death of Aimee. She had moved to the next door of David when they first met with each other and it was love at first which eventually turned into a happy marriage. Author David was brought up near the Navajo Indian Reservation. He left Shiprock in order to complete his education from the New Mexico University. Aimee Thurlo was born in Havana, Cuba, and had spent the 43 years of her life in New Mexico. Both the husband and wife learned writing together as they progressed in their careers. During the course of their career, they used to enjoy throwing projectiles of all kinds at each other. They had stopped buying the breakable items completely and used to believe in the principle of recycling. The writing pair of Aimee and David used to focus mainly on the mystery plots in their books. However, they also wrote a few romantic suspense novels in their career.

Harlequin Intrigue has published most of the books written by author David and his wife. Many of the books that they have written have received prestigious awards on many occasions. The last works of David and Aimee produced a couple of trading post novels titled ‘Looking Through Darkness’ and ‘A Time of Change’. After a few years into their marriage, Aimee Thurlo got diagnosed with cancer and eventually died peacefully in her house in the month of February, 2014. After remaining away from writing to mourn the death of her beloved wife, author David has returned once again in the world of writing and is currently working on the third book in the new mystery series called as the ‘Charlie Henry Mystery Series’. The previous book in this series has gone on to become a finalist for the Arizona-New Mexico Book Award in the category of the Best Mystery-Suspense Book of the Year. A number of books written by author David have been translated into several foreign languages and are available in most countries of the world in various formats.

One of the most popular novel series written by author David Thurlo in collaboration with his wife is known as the ‘Sister Agatha’ series. This series consists of 6 books in all which were published between the years 2002 and 2009. Each and every book in this series features the main protagonist in the form of Sister Agatha, who is introduced as a former investigative journalist. After leaving journalism, she has joined the Our Lady of Hope Monastery convent, located in New Mexico, as an extern sister and serves as a link between the convent and the outside world. The initial novel in the Sister Agatha series was titled as ‘Bad Faith’. It was released by the Minotaur Book publishers in the year 2002. The plot of this book features Sister Agatha, Tom Green, and Father Anslem in major roles.

When the novel starts, it is shown that Sister Agatha was previously known by the name Mary Naughton and used to work as a teacher, investigative reporter, and a free spirit. But now, she has left everything and joined a struggling monastery located in New Mexico as Sister Agatha. Being an extern, she is required to handle the dealings of her order with the world outside the convent, and by doing so, she often feels that her faith and patience are getting tested. Soon, popular chaplain named Father Anslem gets poisoned during the Mass and Sister Agatha decided to bring all her investigative expertise into play and uncover the reality behind Father Anslem’s murder. A local sheriff, who is also her ex-lover tends to make things difficult for her as he has not yet forgiven her for leaving him. The list of suspects is huge and Sister Agatha is required to study each of them thoroughly to catch the murderer before he takes the life other innocent people.

The first book of the series was followed by another intriguing novel titled ‘Thief in Retreat’. This book was published by the St. Martin’s publishers in the year 2004. The story of this book continues to depict Sister Agatha as an extern, who deals with her orders linked to the world outside of the convent. When her archbishop asks her to investigate the strange disappearances of the costly religious art from one of the former monastery in New Mexico called The Retreat, she becomes a little intrigued. Soon, she finds herself entangled in a difficult puzzle of the of vanishing of an art expert. As a result, Sister Agatha is required to make use of all her savvy and worldly instincts in order to uncover a disastrous scandal. During the course of her investigation, she is required to deal with a local sheriff who seems more interested in attaining political glory than finding the reality. In the end, she realizes that if she has to bring the devilish murderer to justice, then she will have to race against time and take the help of some spiritual intervention. She also knows that she will have to make her moves very quickly in order to prevent the murderer from committing other crimes.

Might there ever be any more of the “Pawnbroker” (Charlie Henry Series? I have read all of theose, all of the Ella Clah, and half of the Sister Agatha books. [Can you tell I like mysteries?] While Ellah Clah’s character is well represented by her series of books, I think Charlie Henry could still stand a few more. I just want you to know there are fans out here (my wife and I among them) hoping for more. Thanks!

Are there going to be anymore Ella Clah novels? I have the complete collection in paper back and would love to see more. I started reading them after I had read all of the lateTony Hillerman’s novels.
