David VanDyke is a bestselling author of the “Galactic Sci-fi Adventure”, “Stellar Conquest”, and the “Plague Wars” series that have sold over 300, 000 copies and made the finals of the Dragon and Hugo Awards. He also collaborated with BV Larson in the writing of book 10, 11, and 12 of the bestselling “Star Force Series”. VanDyke is an ex American military officer who has served in two branches of the US military in several combat zones across the globe. Not much is known about David VanDyke’s childhood or his young adult years as he has asserted that his scandalous days are safely buried in the days before social media. His bio for the most part starts with his time in the United States Air Force, where he spent much of his adult life. He spent half a decade at the US Army Airborne Corp as a paratrooper, which included a posting in Germany during the 1980s. It was a good time for a young American in Europe, with all the money he had and knew nothing to do with. He soon got the education bug, and decided to complete his college studies and enrolled for a history degree. When he graduated, he was commissioned with the US Air Force, where he was deployed in intelligence until he retired in 2007. During his time with the army, he traveled across the globe from Britain to Ireland, Korea, Japan, and Iraq, where he gained much experience that he infuses into his writing. He got his start as a professional science fiction author in 2012 with the publication of “The Eden’s Plague” that went on to become highly successful.
David VanDyke has always been a voracious reader right from the time he was five when he would create stories in his head. During his teenage years, he loved reading the likes of Stirling, Koontz, and Zelazny right through to adult hood. VanDyke was brought up in a relatively mainstream and moderate Christian protestant family, which is probably the reason why most of his works are PG-13. Nonetheless, he incorporates a range of characters in his novels that range from fundamentalist to atheist to moderate, as he has asserted that he always avoids stereotyping. He had always kept the dream of becoming a writer author and was involved in some form of writing for nearly three decades of his life. However, it was difficult to break into the traditional publishing market, as he did not know how to translate his stories into good prose and format demanded by the publishing companies. It was not until the advent of online publishing platforms such as Amazon, that he figured that he could have a shot at a publishing career, given the success of his friends such as Vaughn Heppner and BV Larson.
VanDyke is best known for the “Plague Wars” series of novels that has gone on to become an international bestseller. The novels are about a virus called the “Eden Plague, which instead of harming people heals them, but with significant side effects. It is these bad-good tradeoffs that offer the main narrative and subplot of the novels, as the characters struggle with whether they need to infect someone for higher purposes such as saving their life – even if they are unwilling. “The Eden Plague”, the first novel is about a retired military officer who comes home to find a woman and armed man in his house. He soon discovers there is a secret and powerful virus that a group of people involved with the armed man is seeking to control, and it is now up to him to secure the virus. The novel is something of a Koontz or Crichton thriller though with not much of the interlocking science fiction elements. VanDyke followed the novel with “The Demon Plagues” which shifts to ten years into the future where the “Eden Plague” has resulted in a worldwide power struggle and a threat of a nuclear war. With plenty of politics, assassination, conspiracies, love and loss, biotech and life and death, it is an excellent follow up to the first. The third title “The Reaper Plague” is more of a post-apocalyptic novel as it continues the story lines of the first two. The Earth has suffered a nuclear war that has left behind chaos, radiation, and disease.
“Reapers Run” is the first novel of the Plague Wars series of novels by David VanDyke. The apocalyptic thriller is an origins story that follows the journey of a warrior as he goes from a tactical police officer, to freedom fighter and general in his world. Jill Repeth is a US Marine sergeant who finds her life completely changed after her legs are blown off while in combat. She gets the surprise of her life when her legs begin to regenerate leaving her thinking that this must be one of the most bizarre of medical miracles. But for the American government the miracle of her healing is exactly what they would like to keep under wraps. They will do anything in their power to ensure that it stays secret even if it means killing her. She now finds herself on the run for her life, pursued by the very government she gave her life to, in a country torn by strife and looking for her family that disappeared into the madness.
“The Eden Plague” is apocalyptic science fiction techno thriller that is one of the most fascinating of the Plague War series of novels. Daniel Markis, a veteran combat medic finds himself in a sticky situation when armed combatants invade his house. In spite of having lived his whole life under the rule – do not shoot your future wife, he has no choice as he fires back at the shadowy figure, shooting the man or woman before fleeing. He is now fleeing from a shadowy Company and a mysterious thing known as the “Eden Plague” that he has heard rumors about from fellow soldiers. He seeks the help of his former military colleagues and a woman he has always loved in the quest to find answers. He soon learns that what he thought was a small criminal activity is a complex conspiracy that could destroy world peace and change the world as we know it.
