Davis Dresser was an American author of fiction. He was born in 1904 and died in 1977. He has used many pen names in his time and wrote using the pseudonyms of Don Davis, Matthew Blood, Asa Baker, Anthony Scott, Kathryn Culver, Peter Field, Anderson Wayne, and Brett Halliday, as well as Hal Debrett.
Davis Dresser is the creator and writer of the fictional series featuring detective Mike Shayne under the pen name of Brett Halliday. He gave those duties eventually of writing the books to fellow author Robert Terrall to continue. Under the name of Brett Halliday, Robert dutifully picked up where Davis Dresser had left off and went on to write over two dozen novels in the series.
Dresser is the author of the Powder Valley Western series, which he penned under the name Peter Field. The series kicked off with the publication of the very first book in 1933, called Outlaws Three. It was followed up by the sequel Guns from Powder Valley and was followed up by many more. There are dozens of books in the series, the most recent being Feud at Silvermine, which was released to the public in 1965.
He also wrote two novels as part of the Jerry Burke series under his pen name Asa Baker. Rio Kid Adventure was another series written by Dresser under the pen name of Don Davis. There are four books in this series that starts out with Death on Treasure Trail and ends with Two-Gun Rio Kid.
David Dresser also took a rare break from using another pen name or identity and wrote the Twister and Chuckaluck mystery series under his own name. The debut novel in the series came out in 1940 and was titled Death Rides the Pecos. Dresser followed that up with a sequel, The Hangman of Sleepy Valley. This second novel in the series is also known by the alternate title, The Masked Riders of Sleepy Valley. There is a third book in the series, Lynch-rope Law, and the fourth novel rounds out the series, titled Murder on the Mesa. The book came out in 1953.
Death Rides the Pecos is the first book in the Twister and Chuckaluck series of fictional novels by acclaimed author David Dresser. If you love books that feature western settings and murder mysteries, you’ll be certain to really enjoy this book.
The main characters in this novel are called Chuckaluck Thompson and Twister Malone. The two of them are partners, but they often find that they really can’t catch the breaks that they are looking for. The two of them are just looking for a trail that they can follow that will take them all the way through to Mexico. There they are called by the lure of a ranching job.
The two gunslingers are excited at the idea of heading down to the ranch because they have been looking for some peace and quiet to go along with some good honest work and a little money at the end. No matter how quickly they head to Mexico riding on their horses, Twister and Chuck can’t help but feel that trouble is not far behind them.
As it turns out, trouble is not far behind them. When a lone gunshot rings out, the quiet of an isolated wagon road is shattered forever. Twister and Chuck get to the scene where they heard the gunshots ring out from, but by the time they arrive there all they find is a dead body. The killer has fled and by now is long gone from the scene of his killing.
There appears to be clues that may help them out, however. Chuck and Twister find a letter in the pocket of the victim that turns out to be from a woman that is calling for help. Apparently she thought that the person who had the letter was going to come save her, but that’s not going to happen, as he is now lying there dead in the dust of the road.
Twister and Chuck are moved by the letter and know that if they don’t step in to help, no one ever will. Determined to help the lady and save the day, the two of them are going to take on the competition and anything that stands in the way of their mission. Can the gunslingers get the drop on what may be their quickest draw yet? Read this book by Davis Dresser to find out!
The Hangman of Sleepy Valley is the exciting second novel in theTwister and Chuckaluck mystery series. When two gunslingers jump out of the frying pan, it’s apparently just right into the fire. Like it or not, these two are going to take on an entire group of vigilantes in their quest to save a quiet ranch town nestled in Texas.
When it comes to west Texas, Chuckaluck and Twister Malone have no real fondness for those hot and sun-heavy lands. The plains are nothing like the cool air running from the mountains of Colorado, and they even prefer Mexico to Texas. In fact, they’re on the way to the hacienda of a friend in Mexico right now.
They’re just thirty years old, but these two gunslingers are ready to retire. Twister and Chuck have had enough of the showdowns and the years of hard work. They just want to ride, rope, and doze, but they have to get through the Sleepy Valley first in order to get there.
When the two friends come across a group of four bandits while strolling through a part of the ranch land, they find that they all have masks on that only show one eye. More than that, they’re in the process of hanging a rancher up from the tree. While that may be shocking, it seems that a group of killers has been terrorizing the area for months.
Chuck and Twister have run directly into a group of killers and terrorists that have been scaring and hurting people in the area. They’ve never backed their way out of a fight and will not start now. But when they find out a sinister plan, they may find that they’ve met their match. What will happen? Read this second novel in the series by Davis Dresser to find out!
