It is written by a reputed English writer named Rachel Abbott. Rachel started writing this series in 2011 and came up with the first novel in the same year. She has depicted the lead protagonist in each of the books as Tom Douglas. As the series starts, Tom is seen in the role of a Detective Inspector and then goes on to become Detective Chief Inspector as the series progresses. The debut book of the DCI Tom Douglas series written by author Rachel Abbott is entitled ‘Only the Innocent’. It was released by the Thomas & Mercer publication in 2011. This novel features the primary characters in the roles of Laura Fletcher, Hugo Fletcher, and Tom Douglas. Initially, it is described that Sir Hugo Fletcher has lived all his life around the British press. He had a privileged upbringing and was involved in charity work with an aim to bring an end to human trafficking. Even his 2 marriages were quite talked about whenever his name came up. But, when he was found murdered in his home in London, fully naked and tied to his bed, it gave rise to a scandal that no had ever imagined.

Sir Hugo’s wife, Laura Fletcher, returned home after her illustrious Italian vacation and found her home surrounded by paparazzi. It was only was she entered inside that she came to know about the tragic news of her husband’s murder. What shocked her more was the condition in which he was found. When Tom Douglas is asked to investigate this high-profile murder case, he begins by trying to find out who was in bed with Hugo when he was killed. While talking to Laura Fletcher, Tom senses that she is not distraught at all. His suspicion grows ever more when it is established that the murderer is a female. After further investigation, Tom comes to know that Hugo was involved with multiple women and several of them had reasons to kill him, including Laura. He digs deeper and comes up with more secrets about Hugo’s life. In the end, it is the secret that Laura kept hidden that proves to be a turning point in the investigation and helps catch the killer.

Another exciting novel penned in the series is known as ‘Sleep Tight’. It was published by the Black Dot publication in 2014. The essential characters that appear in this book include Olivia Brookes, Tom Douglas, and a few others. Initially, the story opens by mentioning that Olivia Brookes’s children and husband disappear suddenly and she calls the police to report about it. She seems quite distraught at their disappearance and fears that she might not meet them again. Olivia fears a lot because she has experienced several other tragedies before. A couple of years later, Tom Douglas comes to investigate Olivia’s family, and this time, it is Olivia who has gone missing. Every evidence points to the fact that Olivia was with her family in her home on the morning of the day she disappeared.

Strangely enough, the police find Olivia’s car in her garage and her handbag and purse where there usually are. What shocks Tom Douglas is that there is no photo of Olivia’s family members at her home. They have been removed from computers, phones, and albums. He suspects that Olivia’s past might has caught up with her or she might be in great trouble. Tom investigates more and tries to gather enough evidence that can help him head in the direction of Olivia or her family so that he can rescue them from whatever dangers they are facing.

Rachel Abbott was born and raised in Manchester. She is well known for writing thriller and mystery novels. Prior to becoming a writer, she worked for an interactive media company for several years as its managing director. While she was in this job, she had developed a habit of writing daily and wrote everything from user manuals to creative proposals. The most exciting thing for her was to write interactive dramas. In 2000, Rachel sold her company and relocated to Italy, where she bought an old house in the countryside and restored it. She received inspiration for writing novels from Minette Walters, Daphne Du Maurier, and Val McDermid. Currently, Rachel resides on a beautiful island called Alderney and writes full time.
