A native of the state of Hawaii, Debbi Rawlins is a prolific writer of mostly romance paperback novels with an international audience. During her childhood, and through much of her adult life, she has lived the life of a gypsy, living in the cities of Chicago, Houston, Tulsa, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Durham, North Carolina. She has written over 75 stories and novels, and is one of the more popular writers of Harlequin romance novels. The covers of her novels are well known for the full color illustrations of sexy leading men, and the women they fall in love with over the course of the story.
She lived in the country as a child with no neighbors nearby, and no fast food restaurants. She fell in love with books, as well as westerns. As a matter of fact, her first love as a child was with a cowboy on the silver screen when she was 11 years old.
The Start of a Career
It was when she lived in Houston that Rawlins started writing for Harlequin, a company known all over the world for their steamy romance novels aimed at women readers. Some of her early novels such as Slow Hand Luke, portray cowboys as the love interest of a lady. In this book, the title character is dodging a jealous and vengeful husband, and looking to clear his name in the theft of some rodeo prize money. He picks a cop in Manhattan to cover for him, and romances her into not turning him in until he clears his name.
Rawlins would once again play on the love ladies have for bad boys and cowboys in the Harlequin novel Once a Rebel. In this story, a time -traveling hunk of Navajo descent woos a lady, and tempts her to things she would normally never consider. Steamy romance ensues.
In the Harlequin novel Texas Heat, Rawlins revisits her love for the Lone Star state. A tomboy girl, something that is common in the state, falls for a sexy cowboy. Once she has fallen for the hunk, things gets hot and heavy.
In the Harlequin romance novel Once an Outlaw, Rawlins take her readers to the wild and unruly streets of Deadwood in the year 1876. There a handsome cowboy who runs a livery stable takes up relations with a lady escaped from one of the local brothels. But as there is with many of Rawlin’s novels, there is a unique twist. The lady in question claims to be a doctor, from the future no less. This makes for all kinds of unexpected and interesting plot twists and turns. A 19th century cowboy learns how women from the future like to be loved.
Rawlins took a look at the holiday season with her Harlequin novel What She Really Wants For Christmas. In this twisted tale of romance, a TV talk show employee has lost her job, as well as her friends and the money she had won in a lottery. But a surprise date with a hunky doctor has the potential to turn her bad fortunes around. As is the case in many of her stories, romance, and steamy romance at that, follows.
In one of her more recent works, Come Closer Cowboy, Rawlins introduces the reader to a lady who is in need of major change in her life. So she closes down her successful Hollywood bar, and moved east to the town of Blackfoot Hills, Montana. Here she runs into an old flame, who is none too pleased that she has been dodging him. But they have loads of chemistry, and this is one friendship that will never quite be the same. It is filled with the steamy romance scenes that Rawlin’s readers have come to love and expect.
Wild for You, is another romance novel that is set in the state of Montana. It tells the story of an aspiring lady director who has sunk her funds into a Western movie. She has found what she believes is the perfect place to film the climatic scene of her movie. The problem is getting the owner of the land – a rather stubborn rancher – to agree to let her film there.
She is willing to do just about anything to get his permission, even if it means playing dirty. By that, she intends to use all of her sexy charm to get her way in the matter.
If these plots seem rather familiar, or seem to repeat a bit, there is a reason for that. Rawlins long ago found a formula that works, and with a bit of tweaking, these themes repeat themselves through many of her works. A strong willed, sexy woman is facing a crisis of one kind or another, and at some point, meets a virile and strong willed man, most often a cowboy. After butting heads and/or being at odds, they find common ground, and a sexy and steamy romance happens.
This formula has worked well for Rawlins, as she is one of the most popular authors on Harlequin. You can expect that her future works will continue to follow this blueprint, with a few variations as to time and place, though western locations seem to have a special place in her heart.
The Author Today
These days, Rawlins spends her time with her family on a ranch in Las Vegas, Nevada. She loves it here, and chances are, her days of being a nomad are over. While she does not own any horses, she does have five cats, four dogs, three goats, and free-range cattle. Deer and elk are seen on a regular basis.
Her home has become a retreat of sorts for writers from both coasts. Her guest rooms are often full with a writer visiting from far away. She even had one friend, who has three cats of her own, who has been there for over a year and shows no signs of leaving anytime soon.
She continue to churn out novels to this day for her many devoted readers and fans around the world.
