About Debbie Harry

Early and Personal Life

Debbie Harry was born on July 1st, 1945 in Miami, Florida, and was adopted as a baby by Catherine and Richard Harry. She was raised in Hawthorne, New Jersey where she was active in outdoor activities. After graduating from Hawthorne High School in 1963, she attended Centenary College before moving to New York City and working as a secretary for BBC Radio for a year. Harry then pursued her singing career, working as a waitress at Max’s Kansas City and a go-go dancer in Union City. She also briefly worked as a Playboy Bunny.

In the late 1980s, Harry located her birth mother, a concert pianist, but she chose not to pursue a relationship with her. Currently, she resides between New York City and Monmouth County, New Jersey, with her four dogs.

Performing Career

Harry’s career in music began in the late 1960s as a backing singer for folk rock group The Wind in the Willows. She then joined The Stilettos and later Angel and the Snake with Tish Bellomo and Snooky Bellomo. In 1974, she and Chris Stein rebranded the band as Blondie, and their third album, Parallel Lines, became a huge success. The single ‘Heart of Glass’ reached No. 1 in both the US and UK charts. Blondie had further hits with ‘Call Me,’ ‘Atomic,’ ‘The Tide is High,’ and ‘Rapture.’

In 1980, Andy Warhol created a series of artworks and Polaroids of Harry, and made her the first guest on his MTV show Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes. From 1981 to 1996, she enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing two studio albums and appearing in David Cronenberg’s film Videodrome. From 1997 to 2007, she worked with Blondie and collaborated with other artists. In 2006, she began work on her fifth solo album, Necessary Evil, which was released in 2007.

In 2008, Harry continued to be active in the music industry, collaborating with Fall Out Boy, Nick Cave, and others. She released nine albums with Blondie and in 2015 held a residency at the Café Carlyle. In 2020, Harry made a cameo in the romantic comedy series High Fidelity. She shows no signs of slowing down and continues to be a major force in the music industry.

Writing Career

Debbie has had an illustrious writing career as well. In 1982, she co-authored the book ‘Making Tracks: The Rise of Blondie’ with Chris Stein and Victor Bockris. Eleven years later, she wrote the foreword to ‘Debbie Harry and Blondie: Picture This’, a retrospective of her career with the band.

In 2019, Debbie released her memoir ‘Face It’, which chronicled her life and career in Blondie, her solo career, and other artistic pursuits.
