Debra H. Goldstein is an American author born in Newark.

Debra has seen her essays as well as short stories published in a variety of anthologies as well as periodicals. When she isn’t reading a book or writing one, she keeps busy in Alabama. In Birmingham, she holds a position serving for a variety of civic boards She also belongs to the Guppy Chapter and the Sisters in Crime as well as the M.W.A.

She is the author of the fictional novel Should Have Played Poker, which was released to audiences to read in 2016. The novel features the main character of Carrie Martin. She’s a young lady who seems to have it all.

Carrie has a busy professional life working as a corporate lawyer. It’s a good job, even if it does demand a lot out of her. Lawyers don’t really get to have personal lives that flourish as all of their hours tend to go to their cases, the courts, and the firm, and then there’s paperwork and research on top of that as well as a ton of preparation.

As if her job weren’t enough to keep her occupied, Carrie also has to balance trying to make time to visit her father. He lives at a retirement home called Sunshine Village. She’s been making an okay go of everything and managing somehow to find the time to balance work and visiting.

However, the cultivated balance is threatened to be upset entirely by a sudden arrival. Carrie’s mother decides to show up out of nowhere and brings with her a ton of crazy information. She’s appeared without any warning and decided that she needed to make her grand entrance at Carrie’s place of work.

It’s been 26 long years since she’s been around, ever since the day that she decided to leave the family behind. They never had any notice, and the same is true for the day that she finally chooses to reappear. Filled with confusion, the daughter doesn’t know what to think. But her mother isn’t done with the bombshells yet.

She leaves behind her a confession and a sealed envelope. The confession alone is enough to rock Carrie’s world: her mom has told her that she considered killing her father once. Her head is spinning with all of the information and she decides that she must talk to her father about the past before she even thinks about taking on the contents of that envelope.

Carrie rushes to the retirement home to try and see her father. She knows that she doesn’t have a lot of time to find out the answers. But before she is able to get there, she’s in for another shock. The lawyer discovers her mother dead. Worse, the only mother she has ever known is there too and badly injured. It’s yet another shock to try and handle the best that she can.

This is one bad week, but Carrie is determined to find out who has done this. It was clearly an attack, and now that her mother has passed, it’s murder. She is told that she needs to leave the detective work to the authorities and they’ll handle it, but she just can’t let it go. Carrie needs to find out why anyone would want to hurt these two women, the most important figures and role models that she’s had in life.

Things are now more personal than ever. Carrie has no detecting experience, but her efforts are going to put her in place to butt heads with someone else. That would be the detective assigned to the case, and that individual just so happens to be an old flame.

Now the lawyer must team up with the local players of the Mah jongg club at the retirement home to find out some answers. With their help, she just might be able to find out who the killer or killers really are.

Can she find out the identity of the person that attacked her loved ones, or is this lawyer and amateur sleuth only going to put herself and others in harm’s way? When it comes to being good, not everyone wants to play ball. Can this attorney buckle down and find out the truth? Pick up this thrilling mystery novel to find out!
