Thriller author Rachel Amphlett began publishing books about her character, Detective Sergeant Kay Hunter in the year 2016, when “Scared to Death” was released. The series is from the crime thriller genre, and the books usually involve some pretty gruesome moments that are not for the squeamish.

The success of the series is what allowed her to start writing full time, which gave her the best opportunity to go over some of the writing ideas that she had in mind for quite some time.

Kay is someone that uses the wiles she has, rather than strength, to get herself out of any tight situations. She has had a lot of bad things thrown at her, but she only focuses on getting back at those that have wronged her and catching her killer. Kay is married to a veterinarian named Adam, and he brings home different animals—in one, he brings home a snake that is ill and in another a Great Dane that is pregnant.

“Scared to Death” is the first novel in the “Detective Kay Hunter” series which was released in the year 2016. A school girl that was snatched is found in an abandoned building, and the case is only treated as a kidnapping that went wrong. Kay Hunter is not convinced of that though, even more so when there is a man found killed and he has the ransom money with him.

Kay has her very worst fears made real when there is another school girl kidnapped. Her career hangs in the balance, and she is desperate to keep a disturbing secret hidden. It makes her chase for this killer a sprint against time before he kills again. For this killer, the game has just gotten started.

Fans of the novel found that this story held them on the edge of their seat from the start and kept them there until the very end. It is a gripping and fast pace work, not to mention the twists that some did not see coming. The author does a great job developing her characters in this one. Kay is a likable protagonist, as she is realistic, without flaws. She even has a nice romance with a guy named Adam.

“Will to Live” is the second novel in the “Detective Kay Hunter” series, which was released in the year 2017. A filled to capacity commuter train runs over a corpse on a part of the track called “Suicide Mile” by the locals. It quickly comes out that the guy killed was murdered intentionally.

The more the investigation goes, the more a pattern of murders comes to light. Kay finds too, that the reputation the railway has gotten might be a brutal serial killer’s work.

Kay has to stay ahead of this killer and her own foes, as well as find out who it is that is waging a professional vendetta against her. She also has some cold cases to investigate to top things off.

There is another murder that is committed just a week after the previous one, and finds this killer is changing his timetable. She is running out of time to catch this guy.

Fans of the novel found themselves racing through this one, as they did not want to put it down for very long. These are well written books that are full of action. There is a big twist to the story that added to the suspense and mystery, not to mention officers doing good police work. Some are hooked and want more of these books to read. Readers enjoyed Adam (who is Kay’s husband), who brings home animals from his job as a veterinarian.

“One to Watch” is the third novel in the “Detective Kay Hunter” series, which was released in the year 2017. Hours after sharing a scary secret, Sophie Whittaker was killed. Stunned by the brutal killing of the teenage girl are Kay Hunter and her co-workers. At the time she was killed, she was at a private party being held in the countryside of Kentish.

All kinds of dark secrets are revealed as a result. All the twisted motives suggest a history of corruption and greed inside of the tight community. Kay still has to face the vendetta being waged and all the murder suspects in the case. She finds out something that makes her question the trust she has in all the people she knows.

Fans of the novel find that Amphlett does a great job with the cases that Kay is supposed to work. She does a great job of showing how Kay balances work and her personal life to make a fuller reading experience. The premise this one had was interesting, as it explored different ways families find to make sure the daughter stays a virgin. When done in a murder mystery, it was made that much more fascinating. Some like the way that the story focuses on just one murder and allows the reader to play whodunit with the cops in the story.

“Hell to Pay” is the fourth novel in the “Detective Kay Hunter” series, which was released in the year 2017. There is a ruthless killer that takes advantage of vulnerable young women. Kay Hunter realizes this only after a traffic accident happens on a dark night in autumn.

She has unmasked her enemies, her career is still on a downward spiral. All the while, her plans to get vengeance for the victims takes her quite close to the people that want her kept quiet.

She is undeterred, though, and finds the real reason someone wanted her career ruined and puts in motion a horrible chain of events.

Fans of the novel found this one to be just as intense as the first three books were. Some feel that Kay Hunter is one of their favorite detectives. She is a great role model and when things get personal, she makes sure the job gets done and is always professional. This one, for some, was their favorite and Amphlett is truly an author that knows how to captivate her readers with her story.
