Dilly Court
Dilly Court grew up in northeast London and resides in Dorset on the beautiful Jurassic Coast with her husband with whom she has two grown kids and four grandkids. She started her writing career writing scripts for television commercials.

Fans of Downton Abbey will love her books, as well. Filled with nostalgia, pacy stories, and great plucky heroines, all of which are set during the turn-of-the-twentieth century London. Dilly spends a long time researching her novels and fully enters the world when she’s writing in her infamous Engine room.

Each day, Dilly begins at 8:30 and writes until lunch time. Some days she’ll get so immersed in her story that she forgets everything and time will pass so fast that, by the time she finally does stop, she can’t believe two to three hours have gone by. She’s been in some other world her characters who make their own story up actually inhabit.

There’s a dashing man she was thinking would be the hero all of a sudden develops some unattractive traits and will upset Dilly, along with her heroine. Then there’s times a rough diamond, that looked destined to swing from a noose’s end, winds up being an absolute charmer and she finds herself falling for them, so the heroine’s got zero chance of escaping.

By the early afternoon, she’ll have done all her correspondence, paid a few bills, and written out a shopping list. Nothing all that romantic, but entirely necessary. After she’s done that, she’s earned a cup of tea and some custard creams in a biscuit tin.

But sitting at a computer for hours isn’t too good on the figure, however so she typically takes her dog for a walk.

“The Best of Sisters” was nominated for a Romantic Novel of the Year Award for Best Novel.

Dilly’s debut novel, called “Mermaids Singing”, was released in the year 2005. She writes family saga and historical fiction novels and also writes as Lily Baxter.

“The River Maid” is the first novel in the “River Maid” series and was released in the year 2017. London of 1854. Essie Chapman, age twenty-four, lives with her dad in poverty stricken Limehouse, and working on the river as a boatman. Her life appears set in front of her, never to leave this part of London and only be at her dad’s beck and call forever.

Then this one night, she has to transport this mysterious guy from a foreign ship onto the banks of the Thames. He is a man that ends up renting a room inside of Essie’s house, and only identifies himself as ‘Raven’.

Essie, after curiosity gets the better of her, follows this man and gets involved in something far greater than she could’ve ever imagined. Finding herself onboard a ship that is headed for the penal colonies in Australia with Raven and Alice (his cousin), this is just the beginning of a remarkable journey that’s taking her off to the other side of the world then back again.

“The Summer Maiden” is the second novel in the “River Maid” series and was released in the year 2018. The year is 1873. Carrie Manning’s dad dies Esther, her mom, becomes heartbroken. Essie departs from London to heal with Lady Alice, her good friend, and it’s up to Carrie to take care of her family and be in charge of the shipping company her dad left behind.

However the company is in dire straits, which forces Carrie to get work as Maria Colville’s companion. When Maria and Carrie attempt tracking down Maria’s mom, they’ve got no clue about the secrets that they’ll soon discover. Secrets which link the Mannings, the Colvilles, as well as figures from the past that come back to England.

Carrie’s journey is just as unpredictable as the waters which link the rival shipping companies, however is her determination going to be enough to preserve the legacy of her family’s good name?

“The Christmas Rose” is the third novel in the “River Maid” series and was released in the year 2018. Rose Munday, while standing on London’s Victoria docks as the wind bites through her shawl, realizes that she’s been abandoned by her sweetheart. She risked everything to even get to London however, while she stumbles through the pea soup fog, she’s got nowhere to go, and nobody to turn to.

Rose, frightened and alone, steps right into the danger, just to get rescued by two ladies with even less to their names. One’s a woman of the night and the other’s Sparrow, her sidekick. With just a cluster of love letters to her name and all the hope of her sweetheart coming back to her fading, she finds she’s forging a new life with these unlikely companions.

However when one good deed goes sour, a dangerous foe threatens to ruin all of them. Is she going to be able to save her new buddies along with her future? If she’s able to, there’s a Christmas gift that’s waiting sure to change her life forever.

“The Christmas Wedding” is the first novel in the “Village Secrets” series and was released in the year 2019. Daisy’s future, as she held the letter in her trembling hands, crumbled right before her, with the words being engraved onto her heart forever.

The village in Little Creek, during the long winter of 1867. The first flakes of snow are falling to the ground when Daisy Marshall, who is secretly engaged to her master’s son, finds she’s being jilted at the altar.

Daisy, who is heartbroken, flees to Little Creek, located on the coast of Essex. There she’s welcomed warmly, however this village is poverty stricken, and suffering under a cruel Lord of the manor. Once cholera hits, the villagers then truly hit dire straits.

Daisy is determined to help out and makes new friends in earnest Dr. Nicholas and Jay (who’s a dashing smuggler) however she also finds some dangerous new foes, that each threaten to destroy all that she has built. Can she save the village and find some happiness right in time for Christmas?

I love reading Dilly Courts novels .I finish a book and already have the next novel on hand to read. If I may just put in a little criticism that not to use the modern word of GOT or GET please. Its a word that is a pet hate of mine and there are so many more pleasant descriptive words that yourself and or publishers could use in tune with the era that is being written about.
Sorry Dilly that doesn’t mean I’ll not continue to enjoy your books ,it’ll mean I’ll continue to replace got or get in my mind to the word /words I think should be written.
I hope you keep up your hard work and continue to give us years more pleasure with your novels.
