Author Donna Alward is a bestselling author. She reads all kinds of things like Judith McNaught, Jane Austen, Shakespeare, and LaVyrle (with some others thrown in for good measure); both the classics and romance stories. Years after she got her degree, she got the idea that she wanted to write a romance novel of her very own. And she loved it, she found. It took five years and ten manuscripts, but she was finally able to sell her first novel. A career was born. Even though she has accomplished a lot of things in her career, she still loves hearing praise from her readers.

She lives on the east coast of Canada with her kids, dog, two cats, and husband. Alward loves to read, when she is not writing, and enjoys cooking, knitting, and gardening. She enjoys watching Masterpiece Theater.

She writes contemporary romance novels, mainly as part of a series. She has written the “Jewell Cove” series, the “Windover Ranch” series, the “First Responders”, series, the “Cowboys and Confetti” series, and the “Larch Valley” series.

“Off The Clock” is the first novel in the “First Responders” series that was released in 2011. His duty is saving lives. He is Gabe Brennan, and he is a paramedic. He sees an accident and goes into help out, and the victim conjures up makes him remember a night that Gabe has since remembered. It was the night that he almost was unable to save his friend Brandon. It is Brandon’s sister in the car, who is pregnant. He wants her just as much now as he did before. Carly is happy to see such a friendly face. His gallant rescue and the kiss that he gives her, oh so gentle, are so welcome and conjure up feelings of Carly’s that she thought she buried down deep many years ago. She does not want to get hurt again, after she just got done with a bad marriage; even though it would be for the man that has always managed to be right there for her just when she needed him to be. She insists that she is off the market, and Gabe knows this is his cue not to fall for her. But things are getting to strong and burning too hot. It is no accident. All he has to do is convince her of the fact that she belongs in the long empty space that he has held in reserve just for her.

Fans of the novel enjoyed the bittersweet quality, with great emotions and depth that made them feel fully satisfied with the ending. The romance develops quick, and has well written characters that help carry the book along on its way. This story is a great example of what you can expect from one of Alward’s works and reads like a genuine love story. Some liked Carly’s character, liking how strong she was, and Gabe was such a damaged character but was still interesting to read about.

“In the Line of Duty” is the second novel in the “First Responders” series that was released in 2012. Jake Symonds has been a pain in the neck of Constable Kendra Givens since the first time they met. She had to arrest him, while he was in nothing but boxer shorts. His drunken comments made the truth worse. It is a truth that she hates to admit. For a moment, they connected. Two years pass, and she is supposed to look into a break and enter at his pub; the thing she does not expect happens, and he cooks her breakfast. It does not fool her, she knows the old Jake is still lurking underneath. He is still the bad boy from long ago, even with all of his charms. His business involves alcohol, the one thing that made her childhood even worse. He thinks that he has changed, but Kendra still has that stick up her butt that she had all those years ago. He likes the quick wit and sass, much as it pains him to admit. He gets a date with a precise throw at a dunk tank. Their spark flies out of control. But their emotional baggage is so heavy that it makes it hard for them to risk more than this. That is, until something tragic strips everything away from all of their fears. She knows that the biggest danger Jake presents to her, is to her heart.

Fans of the novel found that they just had to finish the novel in one sitting. There is so much packed into the story, there is no other choice. And even after all of that reading, their minds were still thinking about those characters. It has different elements to it that will capture your attention and make you keep on reading until you are finished with it. Like of all Alward’s books, this one was a page turner with real characters, that had compelling stories to tell and it left readers quite satisfied.

“Into the Fire” is the third novel in the “First Responders” series that was released in the year 2012. Chris Jackson, a firefighter, never expects to rescue Ally Gallant from a burning animal shelter. She is his ex-fiancee. Even though three years have gone by since she gave him back the ring he used to propose to her with, it only takes one look at her frightened face in all the smoke to know that he will protect her against anything. The shelter was everything to Ally, and it devastates to her, now that it is destroyed. Chris is suddenly there for her in ways she did not think possible. They are ways she did not count on or think that she deserves. Especially not when she is making plans for her future. But that is refusing to acknowledge the still burning passion that they still have for each other, that does not seem to be going anywhere. When he gets injured, she remembers the reasons that she walked away from him all those years ago. She must conquer everything that has been holding her back with him. So that she can step into love and the fire.
