Dori Hillestad Butler is one of the well known novelists from The United States, who is famous for writing children’s books. She is also renowned for writing short stories based on the young adult genre. Author Butler is the only child of her parents. She hails from Fairmont, U.S., where she spent her early days growing up writing stories as she did not have any siblings to play with. It took author Butler several years to sell the book that she wrote first. After that, she wrote 4 more books and then decided to shift her focus towards writing young adult short stories. Her short stories have appeared in several anthologies and numerous literary magazines over the years. Author Butler also has interests in writing educational materials as well as edit stories for an educational website. She even writes a regular column in a local daily newspaper about book reviews. As of today, author Butler is happily married and has two sons named Andy and Ben. She resides in Kirkland, Washington, along with her family members as well as a cat called Ashley, a beta fish called Willie, and a cocker spaniel called Molly. Author Butler was born on August 26, 1965. Her writing career spans over forty children’s books, plays, magazine stories, etc. Her most famous novel is titled as ‘The Truth about Truman School’. This 2008 young adult story focuses on the important matter of cyber bullying. Another popular book written by her, My Mom is Having a Baby, appeared in the list of the most challenged novels for its depiction of conception and childbirth. In 2010, author Butler wrote a mystery book which went on to win the Edgar Award in 2011 in the category of the best juvi mystery. Prior to the start of her writing career, author Butler used to work in a library as a page.
Butler says that she always liked to read and wanted to become a writer from the time she was small. When she was a child, she used to get enough time to play with her dolls because of her working parents. But, she doesn’t use to play with her dolls like the other girls. In fact, she used to make them act out the narratives that she used to make up. Butler believes that it was the start of her career as a writer. While in school, author Butler was the editor of her school newspaper and tried her level best to get it published as a literary magazine. After finishing her college studies, Butler was not quite sure of what she wanted to in her life. Writing was always there at the back of her mind, but she wanted to do something to support herself. By that time, she was already married. It was her husband who suggested her to take some time off after her college and prepare herself for writing. She says that he was always supportive of her and believed that she could make it big some day. Butler followed his suggestion and the rest is history. She used to write usually when her husband used to go to work. She went on to start her family, but did not stop writing. Initially, Butler sold two stories for a magazine publication. Later on, she wrote full length novels and received success as the time went by. Over the course of her writing career, author Butler has shown a tremendous growth as an author. Now, she gets enough spare time to relax with her family as her years of hard work has paid off handsomely, turning her into a successful and established author. In her other spare times, Butler likes to play mandolin, training her dogs, drink coffee with friends, enjoy hiking, Zumba, and play scrabble. She considers herself lucky that she was able to do what she always wanted to.
One of the well known novel series written by Dori Hillestad Butler is called as The Haunted Library series. It is comprised of a total of 9 books, which were released between the years 2014 and 2016. The debut novel of this series is titled as ‘The Haunted Library’, which was released in 2014 by the Grosset and Dunlap publications. Author Butler has described the primary characters of this book as Claire and Kaz. Claire is introduced as a small girl living above a library in her town along with her father, mother, and grandmother, while Kaz is described as a ghost boy. At the beginning of the story, it is depicted that the haunt of Kaz gets torn down. Also, he gets separated from his family of ghosts. Later, Kaz comes across Claire and her family members. Claire seems to have a special ability with which she is able to see the ghosts around her. So, when she sees Kaz, she could easily see him. Soon, the two become good friends. As they begin to strengthen the bond of their friendship, they come across many thrilling adventures. Kaz also begins to enjoy the company of Claire. After some time, Claire comes to know that there is a ghost in the library who is haunting it for very long. She teams up with Kaz and the two try to solve the mystery related to the library’s ghost. Kaz wonders whether is one of the lost members of his family.
Another popular book written by author Butler in this series is titled ‘The Ghost Backstage’. It was released by the publishers at Grosset & Dunlap in 2014. At the start of the book, it is shown that the new detective agency started in partnership by Claire and her ghost friend, Kaz, has become a success. But, the recent case that they get get seems to be a tough one. One of the classmates of Claire informs her that while rehearsing backstage for the school play he came across a ghost. Kaz follows Claire to her school in order to investigate about this new ghost. After hearing the description of the ghost from the boy, Kaz becomes certain that it is his mother. But, when he tries to find her, she does not appear anywhere. Both of them search every nook and corner of the school, but cannot find any success in finding her. However, the ghostly activities continue to happen mysteriously at different places in the school, mostly in the backstage. Kaz thinks of giving it a final try and see if it is indeed his mom who is haunting the students in Claire’s school.
