Douglas Niles is a fantasy writer and a game designer born in Brookfield, Wisconsin. At a young age, he got an interest in heroic fantasy and wargaming, and since then, he began writing short stories and brief films while in high school.
Niles went to the University of Wisconsin, where he studied speech and minor English. He taught speech and English at Clinton High school. He was among the creators of the Forgotten Realms books, Dragon lance world, and top-secret espionage role-playing game.
Douglas has designed numerous games for Inc., TSR, and SPI, including award-winning board games based on Tom Clancy’s books, Red Storm Rising and The Hunt for Red October.
He has also written two World War II history novels, Fox on the Rhine and Fox at the Front, co-authored with Michael Dobson.
He currently lives in Delavan, Wisconsin, with his lovely wife and two Bouviets. When not writing, Douglas likes playing guitar, visiting family, and cooking.
Darkwalker on Moonshae
Darkwalker on the Moonshae is the debut novel in the Forgotten Realms trilogy.
In the Moonshae Kingdom, there is a terrible struggle that is about to arise. The evil beast Kazgoroth has awakened, and it has drawn power from a corrupt moonwell, a sacred power source for the Goddess.
The Moonshae’s are an archipelago dominated by two human civilizations; Welsh cultures and Viking north men and the Fflolk, who look like an amalgamation of early Irish, Scottish. The book mainly focuses on the area of a country on one of the large islands.
The story serves as a mirror of the old legends like Beowolf, and the main theme is good vs. evil as represented by the Beast of Kazgaroth and the goddess.
It roams on the land, assembling its followers as it spreads darkness in the isles. Prince Tristan has to inform and warn his people on the threat of this evil even when the Goddess sends people to deal with the threat.
Darkwalker on Moonshae is located a hundred miles on the western coast of the forgotten realms; however, it has very little related to the forgotten realms settings. Initially, the novel was written in different settings and refitted to the Realms, which is evident.
People of Moonshae only worship the mother, who’s an aspect of the goddess Chauntes and for centuries has been worshiped by the local druids. The ‘new gods’, religious leaders, known as the Realms pantheon, have recently made the people curious. It’s a feeling of the old ways which are slowly giving way to the new ones.
Tristan is a notable character and his fast transition from being a disappointment to his father to being an expert fighter and an inspirational leader. All this takes place in a few pages and appears as he looks for the magical sword.
Robyn, Tristan’s young ward of mysterious parentage, is more interested as he quickly realizes she has some druidic powers. The children of Goddess and the bloody encounters with the evil servants of Kazgoroth are devastating.
Douglas has done excellent work in character development; for instance, Tristan starts as a spoiled prince with no experience and little training but later fights the giants and wins the sword of legend that will be helpful.
He becomes brave and mature enough to lead his people. Robyn, a second member of the party and Tristan’s adoptive sister, grows from the slightest hints of being interested in nature to becoming not only a druid with some special powers but a druid, the daughter of a mighty druid. She later inherits her mother’s staff and can use the most powerful druidic magic.
Keren is among essential bards in the land. The story alternates between outtakes with the goddess and her challenges, Kargoroth, the beast that corrupts to grow his power.
Darkwalker on Moonshae is a great fantasy story of good versus evil blended with a love story. There are lots of bloody fights, romance, heroic and a cast of engaging and fascinating characters. It’s a fun adventure and a great beginning to the epic fantasy series.
The book is well written and has an easy-to-follow storyline.
The Kagonesti
The Kagonesti is the first installment on Dragonlance: Lost Histories series. The book is divided into three portions; where the first shows Kagonos being the first pathfinder and wielder of the mystic horn at the end of the first Dragon war. He and his people withdraw from the rest of the Elves and retreat deep into the Ashlon forest.
The second portion narrates about Ashaway as he leads people in the third dragon war, which happened during the time for Huma. He has the duty of a pathfinder put in him after the previous one was killed in a raid by the lizardmen who represent the dragon queen.
Ashaway has to look for a way to keep his people safe while still helping the Knights of the Rose pass through thick forests and mountains to reach the Dragon Queen’s fortress.
Even when assisting humans is not allowed by the traditions of Kagonesti, Ashaway is ready to help Solamnic knights.
Each of the three sections is told in vigorous and engaging writing. The last part happens just before the cataclysm and what follows is an amazing Kagonesti by the name Iyadahoe. Douglas does a superb job in developing the story to the end.
Forests cover Ansalon, and under the legendary Silvanos, the elves of Krynn start taming the wilds as they bring their crystal to the city. However, as the Elderwild Kaganos go towards a mystical experience in the mountains, he’s aware that the woodlands have to remain their home forever for his people.
As the years pass, dragon wars temper and the minions of the dark queen are helped by a potential legacy led by respected pathfinders. All this occurs until the wild elves stand at the edge of the deadliest challenge. The challenge gives a choice between survival and annihilation.
Magic, dragons, and battles are plenty throughout the book. Iydahie’s story is compelling and fascinating like the other two.
