Murder In Thrall is the first novel in the Scotland Yard series by author Anne Cleeland. The story kicks off with a bang and readers get to meet the characters of Kathleen Doyle, a detective, and Michael Sinclair, the chief inspector.
This mystery series follows the adventures of these two detectives that are part of Scotland Yard’s finest. Their cases may be dangerous, but at least the two of them have the other one to watch their back. This is a good thing as Kathleen Doyle is green. It is her first year on the job and she has a lot to learn.
Luckily she is paired with Michael and the two of them make a decent team. No one would necessarily think to put them together or that they would be the best to work with each other. This unlikely pair seem to be like total opposites. Kathleen has red hair and comes from an Irish background that includes a humble start in life. She has very average means of living.
Meanwhile, Lord Acton is another title that her male partner goes by. That would be because he is a British lord. Unlike his partner Doyle, Michael grew up with a family that had tons of money and privilege. Even though he could have done nothing for all his life, the lord decided to take advantage of his opportunities. He may be wealthy, but he is also highly intelligent.
Smart and mysterious, Acton is a unique detective and Scotland Yard is lucky to have him. He is about to guide Doyle and be her first link into the criminal world, Now they must team up and have the others’ back as they take on a case where they are attempting to track down one of the most elusive killers in London.
Homicides in the city of London are quite common, but Acton has proven his mettle by solving a number of the high-profile ones. He has an uncanny skill set when it comes to this job. While maybe no one would able to reproduce what he does specifically, this detective does sense something special about Doyle. There’s something unique and perhaps even exceptional underneath all of that awkwardness.
Doyle’s a little new to the job, but Acton has every bit of confidence that she will be able to settle in with time. He’s doing everything that he can to show her the ropes so that she can learn while on the job and get more confident in her abilities. Everyone learns by osmosis beyond formal training and education, and if you’re good enough and attentive, you can crack a lot of investigations that other detectives might never have a hope of solving.
The two of them do seem to have a way of working well together. The inspector is even starting to think that the sense of intuition that his partner is showing is showing to be eerily accurate. It may be just the thing that they need in order to break a case of murder investigations wide open and solve them for good.
Acton and Doyle have a whole new case on their hands when another dead body turns up. This time it’s at a racetrack, and a trainer is dead. The pair immediately starts to interview the various people involved that knew the victim. However, it’s not helping all that much to stop the killer because they just keep on striking people.
Now they have less information than they would like. With a ton of questions and not a lot of time to find the proper answers, this investigation is a lot of stress on the heads of a seasoned professional and his ambitious and green new partner. They have only a short amount of time and no idea how much of it.
It turns out that their colleagues over at headquarters are also getting in the way. The investigation is being all mucked up over petty jealousy and career ambition. These errors in the workplace and the human element could end up causing Acton to lose the case. That is something that he simply cannot allow to happen.
With a killer out there wreaking havoc on the general population, these two have previous little time to spare. They are trying to crack a case and fight their chemistry in the process. With the worst coworkers in the world on their backs and a case that needs to be solved, the two of them definitely have their work stacked up for them.
Ready to tackle an evil killer, Doyle is going after this with everything that she has. With Acton by her side, they’re sure to have the best shot at catching this criminal. As they grow closer to the end, this killer appears to have them in their sights.
Can they avoid being the next victims of a killer? Read this novel to the end and discover what happens for yourself!
Murder in Retribution sees the dynamic duo of Acton and his partner Doyle back again. This time their case involves a turf war.
It turns out that the Russian Mafia and a splinter group of Sinn Fein are in the middle of a war, and its all over money. The underworld battle is on, and the detectives are about to find out that this fight is officially beyond control.
With the deaths mounting, it is up to these two to figure out just what is going on– and how they’re going to stop it. What will happen? You must pick up this exciting sequel in order to find out!

Why are only the first three books in this series audiobooks? I have poor eyesight and would love to listen to the rest of the series.
I looked and they all appear to be available via Audible.
