The “Dragon’s Gift” series is a set of urban fantasy novels by Linsey Hall, a bestselling paranormal romance and urban fantasy author. Before becoming an author, Linsey worked as an archeologist studying all manner of shipwrecks under water. She worked in all manner of waters from muddy rivers to tropical waters. After spending more than ten years searching for old bits of shipwreck material, she decided to settle down and started writing adventure novels. She believes life is a little better with magic and hence she decided to become a paranormal romance and urban fantasy author. Nonetheless, writing is not something she just got into recently as she did a lot of writing as an archeologist and has always loved reading romance novels. In 2011, she started writing fiction and published “Hidden Magic,” the first novel of the “Dragon’s Gift” series of novels in 2017.
The “Dragon’s Gift” series of novels are a set of novels about women referred to as the Firesouls. The Firesouls have been unlucky enough to have a piece of dragon soul which has endowed them with forbidden and deadly magic though it also helps them find treasure. The series of novels are demarcated by character with each character having their own set of novels. The first three sets of novels are about Cass, Del and Nix each of whom have supernatural powers. At the beginning of it all they are blackmailed to steal for a criminal living in the supernatural world. They have no family or homes and make one of their own even though it is always a constant struggle to stay under the radar. It a dangerous fight for survival and they usually come very close to losing it all after encounters with some very dangerous adversaries.
In “Ancient Magic,” the first novel of “The Huntress” novels of the “Dragon’s Gift” series, three young girls Cass, Nix and Del wake up and have no memory of how they came to be in that location. They are feeling that they are in danger and something tells them they need to run to safety. While they seem very normal, these girls are far from normal as they have supernatural powers, which is what is telling them to run and hide from danger. A decade later, the three are running a store that tracks down and sells magical artifacts. They live in hiding from humans though they sometimes pretend to be who they are not. The three are Firesouls that can steal powers from almost anyone and this rare ability could get them imprisoned if they are discovered. Cass usually pretends to be a Mirror Mag,e but when she is approached by a shifter for a job, she refuses. If she agrees to help trace a scroll that details all magical creatures she knows their identity will be outed putting her and her sisters in great danger. Aiden senses that Cass has magical powers but does not know why she is not willing to use them. What follows is a hunt that takes Aiden and Cass on a dangerous quest. But Aiden is a powerful magician and may just be the one that digs up their secret. It is also soon clear that someone with magical powers is also after the fabled scroll they are looking for.
In “Magic Undying,” the first novel of “The Seeker” novels of the “Dragon’s Gift” series, Del Bellator wakes up in hell, which is clearly not her idea of a good time. What she wants is to be back on Earth where it is cooler. On Earth she usually spends her time hunting down magical treasure to stock Ancient Magic and kills demons. But it turns out that it can be easy to escape hell but it is staying out that may the hard part. She has magic that defies the physical laws of the supernatural world but she is not very proficient at controlling it. If other beings were to realize just how powerful magic she possesses, she is sure to be a victim of persecution by the Order of the Magica. Del has a forbidden and deadly secret – part of her soul is made of dragon. Things get very interesting when the Warden of the Underworld Roarke Fallon arrives at her house intending to arrest and take her back to hell. He is the most powerful shifter she ever had to deal with and he is set on bringing her back. If she can catch an escaped demon, maybe he will be more lenient but only if she agrees to work with him. She may have to tap into her forbidden magic to accomplish her mission and that is as recipe for disaster and discovery.
“Fugitive of Magic,” the third novel of “The Protector” novels of the “Dragon’s Gift” series opens to Nix getting her Ancient Magic shop attacked. She is not one to take such an attack lying down and she immediately sets out to find the thief. But what she learns is nothing she could ever have imagined. Nix is also witness to a poor guy getting brutally killed and lands herself in very hot water when she tries to save him. The killers had somehow managed to get her magical signature on the body and since he was allied with the Vampires, they are coming after her. The Vampire Enforcer is a dangerous, tall and dark guy who gets a collar on Nix that is set to blow off her head in a few days. First things first, she needs to escape from the claws of the Vampire Enforcer before doing anything. She needs to get away so that she can work on proving her innocence. Getting away also means she can protect her identity. But it is not going to be easy as Ares will be on her trail the whole time. As is often the case with Linsey Hall, this is a furious and fast novel that combines several mythological and historical elements to make for a great read.
