Root Magic

Initially published through the ‘Walden Pond Press’ publishing label, this would be the first full book from Eden Royce. Not a part of any series, it’s a stand-alone title for children using a historical setting alongside a fantasy driven narrative. Coming out on the 5th of January in 2021, it would set-up and establish Royce’s writing style and approach for many new followers around the world.

Set in South Carolina 1963, this sees Jezebel Turner following the passing of her grandmother, as the local police have taken to harassing her family. Soon to begin a new school with her twin brother Jay, the two of them are now dealing with school integration, and then, as they both turn eleven, their uncle Doc informs them he will teach them rootwork. Dealing with her newfound powers, an evil arrives upon the community, as Jez realizes she must do whatever it takes to see off the danger. Will she be able to manage it and save the day, can she navigate her newfound powers, and what will become of her root magic?

The setting and the world is brilliantly realized here, as it takes real-life situations and events and shines a light on them. Looking at civil rights and race relations during the 1960s, this manages to establish a very definite sense of world-building. Dealing with some difficult subject matter, Eden Royce doesn’t shy away from it, whilst also making it instantly accessible for her younger readers.

Its characters are also well drawn, making for engaging protagonists that really bring the story itself to life.
