Elise Broach is a NY Times bestselling American writer of children’s books. Some of her widely popular books include Shakespeare’s Secret, Missing on Superstition Mountain, Masterpiece, Desert Crossing, etc. The books penned by Broach are divided into two series, the Missing on Superstition Mountain series and the Masterpiece Adventures series. Additionally, she has penned several single novels in her career. Besides writing novels, Broach is also well known for her picture books and chapter books.

A few of her acclaimed picture books include Seashore Baby, My Pet Wants A Pet, Hiding Hoover, Snowflake Baby, Wet Dog, Springtime Baby, Cousin John Is Coming, etc. Many of the books of author Broach have been selected as Best Children’s Book by Publishers Weekly, ALA notable books, Best Book for Teenage Readers by NY Public Library, Teacher’s Choice by IRA, etc. They have also been selected for the E.B. White Read-Aloud Prize and received an Edgar Award nomination.

Before deciding to take up writing as a career choice, Broach obtained her degrees, undergraduate and graduate, from Yale University in history. She was born on September 20, 1963, in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, Broach resides in rural Connecticut’s woods. Her house is surrounded by farms and has a post office and a library within walking distance. While growing up, Broach lived in different places, including New York, California, Georgia, England, New Jersey, Alabama, and Virginia. After completing her degrees of M.Phil., M.A., and B.A. from Yale University, she started teaching creative writing at the same university. Now, she manages both the careers of teaching and writing side by side. Broach feels if she had not become a writer, she would have definitely worked as a story editor for film scripts. She loves movies a lot and likes fixing character and plot problems according to her thinking.

At some point in life, Broach even played with the idea of becoming an FBI agent or an art museum director. Previously, Broach had tried her hand at working as a telemarketing caller for NBC. She believes it is the worst job one can ever have because they have to make phone calls the whole day and ask stupid questions to people. Broach was quite stressed out and bored with that job. In her free time, Broach loves to watch reality TV shows with her family and doesn’t find it embarrassing at all. A typical writing ritual for her consists of hot tea and chocolate. Broach finds chocolate energizing and tea soothing.

Though Broach has the knack for coming up with interesting stories one after the other, she doesn’t really know where the inspiration for those stories come from. She thinks she takes points from different events, incidents, and influences. In 1998, Broach had undertaken a course in children’s writing along with one of her friends. It was affiliated with the adult education program of a local school. After the course ended, Broach formed a writing group with five other writers and started dedicating time together to work on novels. This way, she gained courage and honed her writing skills in the company of aspiring writers like herself. Broach says she will always be indebted to her wonderful writer friends Anne Gaston, Laurie Krebs, Peggy Thomas, Claire Carlson, and Mary Hughes. They were the ones who helped her finish writing the manuscript of Shakespeare’s Secret.

Even after spending lots of time and energy on writing that novel, the path to getting it published was not an easy one. Broach had sent the manuscript to 8 to 10 agents and editors, but faced rejections from each one of them. However, she didn’t feel discouraged or let down. Instead, she put the idea of publishing her book on hold and began focusing on creating picture books. It was the literary agent that helped her in publishing the picture books who inquired about her interest in writing fiction. It was at this point that she presented Shakespeare’s Secret to her. The agent liked it very much and made sure that it reached out to a large number of readers across the globe. As of today, Broach resides in Easton, Connecticut with her family and keeps herself busy in writing as much as she can every day.

A wonderful book series penned by author Elise Broach is known as The Masterpiece Adventures series. It began in 2013 and is still going on. Author Broach has added successful multiple volumes to this series since its launch. She has given beautiful illustrations that keep the readers interested from start to finish. The series revolves around the special bond of friendship shared between a boy and a beetle. The boy, James, loves Marvin the beetle very much and considers him his best friend. Other important characters created by Broach for this series include Elaine, Uncle Albert, Karl, Christina, and several others. The debut book of this mind-blowing series is entitled ‘The Miniature World of Marvin & James’. It was released by the Henry Holt & Co. publication in 2013. This book opens by mentioning that James is going out for a week on vacation. He has decided not to take his best friend, the beetle named Marvin, with him thinking that it is best for him to be at home.

In the absence of James, Marvin has to spend time in the company of his annoying cousin beetle named Elaine. Soon after, Elain and Marvin land themselves in all kinds of trouble, including getting trapped inside a sharpener. Marvin wonders if James is still going to consider him his best friend after finding out what mischiefs he has done when he was enjoying his vacation. Another exciting installment of this series is called ‘Marvin & James Save the Day and Elaine Helps’. It was also published by Henry Holt and Company in 2019. This novel opens by showing that James’ dad, Karl, has decided to get married to his friend from work, Christina.

James is going to hold the ring for his father. He seems excited, but also nervous at the same time. James likes Christina but seems worried about losing his father to a different life and family. This worry and nervousness make him wonder what will happen if he ends up dropping the ring. Marvin tells him that he will always be there to help him. But, he gets stuck with another important job and begins to worry about it instead of focusing on James’s problem. Both of them wonder if the wedding will be ruined because of them.
